Hope and Faith was a wonderful show that deserved better from ABC. I will forever hate Dancing with the Stars for ending its Friday run, several shows had worse retention from DWTS than Hope and Faith in its only week there. Making things worse was the three season rule that started shortly after Hope and Faith ended with most shows at three full seasons automatically getting season 4. I also liked 8 Simple Rules and Life with Bonnie. What I saw of Complete Savages was good, but I was also a big Joan of Arcadia fan. George Lopez I watched on other nights and in syndication but Joan of Arcadia won out on Fridays. It was neck and neck with 8 Simple Rules for my viewership.

2003 TGIF was such a cope. Felt like ABC was only bringing it back because The WB did their own version of TGIF on Friday, complete with Sabrina and a Bob Saget sitcom.

The second iteration of ABC's TGIF block (2003–2005) failed due to a combination of internal mistakes and external market changes. The original TGIF succeeded by creating a branded, family-friendly event, but the revival lacked that cohesion and faced a splintered television landscape where its core audience no longer stayed home on Friday nights.

Lack of consistent, brand-appropriate programming

The original TGIF flourished with a stable of hit family sitcoms that often featured character crossovers and a consistent tone. The revival, by contrast, struggled with constant lineup shifts and a lack of creative synergy.

A disjointed mix of shows: The block featured shows with different tones and target demographics, such as the pre-existing, edgier comedies George Lopez and Life with Bonnie mixed with new, more traditional family sitcoms like Hope & Faith.
No narrative connection: Unlike the first TGIF, which featured storylines that crossed between shows like Family Matters and Step by Step, the second block's shows felt like "a bunch of random sitcoms clumped together".
Poorly performing new series: Many of the new sitcoms, like Married to the Kellys and Complete Savages, failed to gain traction and were canceled quickly.

Shifting viewer habits and market fragmentation

The television landscape of the early 2000s was fundamentally different from the 1990s when TGIF first thrived, and ABC failed to adjust its strategy.

Target audience aged out: The kids who grew up with the original TGIF were now young adults who were less likely to stay home on a Friday night. ABC's attempt to recapture them by airing slightly more "adult" family shows proved unsuccessful.
Emergence of competition: The rise of cable channels like Nickelodeon and The WB, along with the growing prevalence of multiple TV sets in homes, meant the whole family no longer gathered to watch TV together.
Stronger counter-programming: The 2003–2005 TGIF lineup consistently lost in the ratings to dramas on other networks, particularly CBS's popular procedural JAG.

Failure to build a cohesive brand identity

ABC's second TGIF revival lacked the memorable and consistent branding that defined the original, weakening its ability to create a viewing event.
Lack of memorable branding: The 1990s block was famous for its upbeat theme song, animated mice, and host segments. The 2003 version, by contrast, had a brief and unsuccessful attempt at hosting by Alex Trebek and lacked compelling, unifying on-air elements.

TGIF as a "black hole": According to a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcYodRwbMOY) analyzing the revival, by the mid-2000s, the TGIF brand had become associated with failure, a "black hole" that negatively impacted any show placed within it. ABC had stopped actively promoting the TGIF name by early 2005.
Trying to recapture nostalgia, not build the future: Instead of creating a new concept for a new era, the network banked on the TGIF name to revive a bygone era of television viewing. This strategy failed to generate the same magic with a new generation.

During the final years of the original TGIF sitcom block (1989–2000), ABC made several key missteps that led to its decline. The network overextended its successful formula, failed to adapt to changing audience habits, and lost key talent and shows due to corporate tension.

Loss of the core audience

The block's decline was a result of ABC failing to recognize that its original audience was growing up and Friday night priorities were shifting.

Aging out: The viewers who had grown up with TGIF favorites like Full House and Family Matters were teenagers and young adults by the late 1990s. With more social options, working part-time jobs, and the emergence of cable channels like MTV, staying home to watch television on a Friday night became less of a priority.
Targeting the wrong replacement: ABC's attempt to draw in new, younger viewers with teen-focused content like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clueless alienated some of the remaining older family viewers. This strategy failed to recapture the multigenerational "family-friendly" magic of the block's heyday.

Shift in creative strategy

As the audience changed, so did ABC's approach to programming, leading to a drop in quality.

Over-reliance on gimmicks: The block lost its creative footing by relying on shows that failed to capture the audience's imagination. After the success of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ABC tried and failed to replicate the fantasy formula with short-lived failures like You Wish and Teen Angel.
Ignoring a successful formula: In its final years, TGIF abandoned the self-contained, interconnected universe it had once cultivated through on-air bumpers and cross-over episodes. Without the unifying brand identity, the block simply became a collection of random sitcoms, losing its special, "appointment viewing" feel.

Executive miscalculations and corporate pressures

Behind-the-scenes issues contributed to the block's eventual collapse.
Alienating a key producer: A rift developed between ABC and Miller-Boyett Productions, the creative team behind many of the block's biggest hits, including Full House, Family Matters, and Step by Step. When Disney acquired ABC, Miller-Boyett felt sidelined, leading to escalating tensions. When the renewal for Family Matters and Step by Step came up in 1997, ABC let the aging but still popular shows go.
A disastrous jump to a rival network: Seeing an opportunity, CBS picked up Family Matters and Step by Step for its competing "Block Party" lineup. The move failed spectacularly for everyone involved. The shows lost much of their audience, the CBS block was a total failure, and ABC was left without two of its legacy titles. The messy outcome hurt both networks and further de-energized TGIF.
Failure of the Olsen twins revival: In a last-ditch effort to recapture the old TGIF success, ABC launched Two of a Kind in 1998, featuring former Full House stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The new show, produced by the estranged Miller-Boyett, lasted only one season. Its failure was a clear sign to ABC executives that the old magic was gone.
