Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV pulls back the curtain on an empire, built by creator Dan Schneider, that had an undeniable grip on popular culture. Series such as "All That" and "The Amanda Show", among others, were obsessively consumed by children across the country and defined comedy for a generation.
But behind the upbeat onscreen presence on these shows with questionable jokes and over-the-top sketches, Quiet On Set reveals an insidious environment rife with allegations of abuse, sexism, racism, and inappropriate dynamics with its underage stars and crew.
Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV will premiere across two nights on ID from 9PM-11PM ET/PT on Sunday, March 17 and Monday, March 18.

OK I will answer your question.. but I'm not even sure what I'm saying though. I'm not good with grammar, but I'm trying to explain.
So I think, the rumors seems to be true about allegations for Dan Schneider.
I recalled back on the book Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died, she has negative experience work with "The Creator", referring to Dan Schneider. She was offered hush money to never talk about her experiences working with Nickelodeon, but she refuses.
Also Alexa Nicolas back in fall 2022 or so.. protesting about predators, like Dan Schneider. She had bad experiences working on Zoey 101.

In this video I dive into the heinous acts of several Nick employees over the last 20 years.. these crimes put a blotch on our favorite childhood shows, and they caused many to suffer physically, and emotionally.
Thank you For watching.

Drake Bell details "extensive abuse" by acting coach during Nickelodeon days (https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/drake-bell-nickelodeon-doc-directors-151856119.html)
At first, actor Drake Bell wasn’t sure he was ready to publicly reveal that he was the previously unidentified minor who had been sexually assaulted by Nickelodeon dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck, who was convicted of child sexual abuse in 2004.
“I think there was a lot of uncertainty up until very recently,” Emma Schwartz, co-director of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, tells Yahoo Entertainment.
The four-part Investigation Discovery (ID) docuseries examines the toxicity on the sets of Nickelodeon showrunner Dan Schneider’s kid-themed shows — All That, The Amanda Show, Zoey 101, Sam & Cat, Drake & Josh — in the '90s and '00s. In the show, Bell, now 37, revealed he was the minor John Doe who accused Peck of sexual assault and abuse.
Schwartz and filmmaking partner Mary Robertson were deep into exploring that world — interviewing former cast members, writers and crew members about their experiences — when they connected that there were three different men who worked on Nickelodeon sets in that era who had been arrested and convicted of child abuse.
“We really wanted to understand how that had happened,” Schwartz says, “and in the course of having conversations, you start to have whispers of who some of the victims are.”
Bell was introduced to Peck during Season 2 of The Amanda Show in 2000 when Bell was 14 and Peck was 40. In the doc, Bell details how Peck — who had been talked up as having a hand in Leonardo DiCaprio’s early success — glommed on to him, pushing out Bell’s dad and becoming his manager.
In the series, Bell calls the "extensive" abuse “pretty brutal” and says it was “the worst stuff that someone could do to somebody as a sexual assault.” Bell felt trapped. He later broke down to his mother about the abuse, which continued, and they went to police. Bell secured Peck’s confession in a call recorded by investigators. In 2004, Peck pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and oral copulation with a minor under 16. He served 16 months in prison.
Bell’s identity was kept a secret, and it stayed that way for over 20 years. The filmmakers of the series say much sensitivity was involved when they approached Bell to see if he wanted to share his story.
“Anyone who's a survivor of child sex abuse, you want to be very, very careful and very, very thoughtful,” Schwartz says. “You don't know if they're ready to speak. You don't know if they want to have any outreach — or that if even by reaching out, you could trigger them in some way. So I wrote a letter, and from that letter we began a conversation. It was not an easy conversation, and there was a lot of back and forth before we finally met. And once we met, I didn't know if he would want to move forward. Even once he got to a point where he was ready to share on camera, I don't know that he went home and said, ‘That was the best decision I made in my life.’”
Some of Bell's uncertainty was lifted after filmmakers screened the final project with him.
“I think he felt it really did reflect his truth,” Schwartz says. “And ultimately, as this has come out, has felt a bit lighter from holding in so much for so many years that he's really still trying to grapple with and move forward from.”
Bell — who went on to star in Drake & Josh from 2004 to 2007 — detailed the horrors of what he went through, including going to court to deliver a victim impact statement and seeing Peck’s side of the courtroom filled with Hollywood supporters.
“That was one of the more shocking … revelations that came from the reporting of this,” says Robertson. “And I think for Drake, it was one of the more devastating aspects of a completely devastating experience.”
The filmmakers went to court to unseal the over 40 letters of support that were sent to the judge on Peck’s behalf, including those written by James Marsden, Saturday Night Live’s Taran Killam, Growing Pains co-stars Joanna Kerns and the late Alan Thicke, X-Men producer Tom DeSanto, Twin Peaks actress Kimmy Robertson and Boy Meets World co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle. (Last month, Strong and Friedle talked on their podcast about being “groomed” by Peck, who ingratiated himself into their lives. While they testified on his behalf, they later expressed regret over it.)
The betrayals hit even closer to home. While the doc noted neither Schneider nor any top Nickelodeon executives wrote letters in support of Peck, Drake & Josh director Rich Correll and the show’s stage manager Beth Correll did, telling the judge they’d work with Peck again in a minute. After Peck was released from prison, the Corrells hired him to work on a different kids’ TV show, Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, from 2006 to 2007.
“There are many remaining questions about the conditions under which the letters of support were written,” Robertson says. “And it's our hope that we'll learn more about that in the coming weeks and months.”
Bell talked in the doc about how the abuse led to “self-loathing” and “self-destructive behavior.” He “tried to escape” via alcohol and substance abuse. He was arrested twice for DUI in 2009 and 2015. In 2021, Bell pleaded guilty to one count of felony attempted child endangerment and a misdemeanor charge of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles relating to conduct involving a teen girl he met online in 2017 when she was 15. He admitted to making “mistakes” including “irresponsible text messages,” but denied physical contact with the victim. In 2023, Bell was reported missing and underwent a mental health evaluation once authorities found him. His wife, with whom he has a 2-year-old son, filed for divorce soon after.
The docuseries is not trying to be an exposé of Bell’s life after Nickelodeon, however.
“I do think that there are real differences between that [more recent] case and his experiences with Brian Peck,” Schwartz says “Really what we wanted to do with our project was focus on the voices who had been part of these sets and shows, [really] understanding that experience” in that specific period of time.
The doc digs into the work environment Schneider fostered. As Nickelodeon’s “golden boy,” Schneider created hit after hit, and before his 2018 ouster (with a $7M payout), he operated in a way that apparently went unchecked.
There’s a disturbing number of clips of the young child actors — including Ariana Grande and Jamie Lynn Spears — being made to do things that were overtly sexual in nature. He put kids in revealing costumes that made them feel uncomfortable. They were made to perform degrading and scary on-air dares. He got into a hot tub with a baby-faced Amanda Bynes and tried to help her get emancipated from her parents. He created recurring characters named “Penelope Taynt” and Peck’s character, “Pickle Boy,” seemingly just for the sexual innuendo. He blew up at child actors, humiliated female writers and demanded massages from female employees.
Being on a Schneider show wasn’t a 9-to-5 gig, and the kids mixed with behind-the-scenes adults after hours, including at parties, which blurred lines. Along with Peck, Jason Handy, a production assistant on All That and The Amanda Show, whose job was escorting young performers on set, was arrested for child pornography in 2003. Ezel Channel, an animator, was arrested for committing lewd acts on a 14-year-old boy and showing him pornography in 2005.
“We have over a dozen folks who have never really spoken publicly before about these experiences and really help shine a light in a way that I don't think the public has seen before,” Schwartz promises.
Bell says in the doc that Schneider was not aware of Peck’s abuse until he confided in him. He said Schneider offered to support him in any way he could, but Bell just wanted to move on.

Hello everyone and welcome back. Today I wanted to do a follow up video about the Quiet on Set documentary featuring previous Nickelodeon Stars. Along with talking about more instances with Drake Bell, we are also going to talk about Kyle Sullivan and his story as featured in this Variety Article. I also want to talk about the 2024 Kid's Choice Awards because Nickelodeon just announced that their award show will be in summer this year. The timing is too coincidental to not talk about. What are your thoughts?

Nickelodeon SENDS THREATS To Drake Bell Over New Documentary's ACCUSATIONS?!!
Nickelodeon has finally broken its silence on the unsettling controversies involving Drake Bell, delving into the murky circumstances they've found themselves enmeshed in. What recent shadows have been cast, and what somber words did they offer in response?
Drake Bell, known for his role as a child star, is now speaking up about something serious for the first time: the S A he faced when he was just 15 years old. He's bravely sharing his story on an upcoming TV series called "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV," (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1bhoice/quiet_on_set_the_dark_side_of_kids_tv_is_off_to_a/) which is scheduled to air on March 17 and 18.
Nickelodeon has issued a statement in the wake of revelations about S A and A disclosed by former "Drake & Josh" star Drake Bell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wQYBOF2cuY), relating to incidents with dialogue coach Brian Peck during Bell's childhood.
In the documentary, Drake Bell reveals that he was A by Brian Peck, who worked as a dialogue coach on Nickelodeon's shows like "All That" and "The Amanda Show." Bell was part of "The Amanda Show" cast from 1999 to 2002, and later starred in his own Nickelodeon series, "Drake & Josh," which began in 2004.
Peck faced serious legal trouble when he was arrested in August 2003 on 11 charges linked to accusations of S A involving an unnamed child. In May 2004, Peck pleaded no contest to engaging in a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16. As a result, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was required to register as an offender in October 2004.
For more than 20 years, Drake Bell kept his identity hidden as the minor involved in that case.
Nickelodeon has made a public response after Drake Bell's disclosure, stating, "Now that Drake Bell has disclosed his identity as the plaintiff in the 2004 case, we are dismayed and saddened to learn of the trauma he has endured, and we commend and support the strength required to come forward."

One of the biggest, most pervasive scandals in kids' TV is set to be exposed, as the new documentary series "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids' TV" (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1bhocif/pedophiles_on_set_sexism_in_the_writers_room/) on Investigation Discovery explores the dark secrets surrounding the shows of Dan Schneider (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGPq4egRuZE) over his decades of domination at Nickelodeon. But as we all publicly reckon with the allegations and accusations of what happened behind the scenes (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6256305&postcount=163) at Schneider's Bakery, how do we, as viewers, respond to the controversy? I offer four big things to keep in mind as you watch the docuseries and navigate the weeks to come as social media and the kids' TV community at large grapples with the shocking new revelations. I also offer a few thoughts of my own on the Schneider situation (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1bhsu89/dan_schneider_denies_sexualizing_child_stars_on/), and how I've handled the topic in the past and going forward.

Thoughts on "Quiet on Set" (https://www.patreon.com/posts/thoughts-on-on-100695330)
I imagine, being one of Youtube’s “Nickelodeon Content Creators”, you want to know what I thought.
QUIET ON SET, the new four-part documentary detailing inappropriate behavior and abuse on the set of Dan Schneider’s various Nickelodeon shows, starts off on its worst foot, with all the earmarks of trashy tabloid journalism. A couple of gossip journalists walk us through events and interject how you’re supposed to feel about them. There’s one moment where Leon Frierson, former ALL THAT cast member, talks about how uncomfortable some of the costuming made him, about how the noses on a nose-themed superhero costume has some unfortunate phallic resemblances, and then we cut to a writer from Buzzfeed going “and then the sneeze gag is basically a c** shot joke!”
Frierson never says that. In a later episode, a similar comparison is made to a gag on ZOEY 101, but there it’s actress Alexa Nikolas making that connection from the workplace environment she had found herself in. It’s an authentic observation, where in the earlier example it was outsider sensationalization, playing to the “crusaders” on Twitter and Tiktok where the public side of Schneider drama has mostly lived over the past decade. They bring on Marc Summers, Nickelodeon elder statesman who had virtually no presence in this era of the channel, for all of twelve seconds so that he can watch a clip of a Schneider show and go “oh, wow, they aired that?”
You can imagine how the producers' eyes must have lit up when they learned that Brian Peck, former Nick dialogue coach and convicted sex offender, owned a John Wayne Gacy painting. I mean, yeah, that’s ****ed up, but it has virtually nothing to do with anything. It is, however, a perfect “can you believe this” moment that can be clipped and shared on social media for shock value. It’s something that the documentary can ride as a viral moment.
QUIET ON SET was produced for Investigation Discovery, whose bread and butter is schlocky true crime documentaries. Shows like EVIL LIVES HERE and WHO THE (BLEEP) DID I MARRY. Not exactly tasteful television. The channel is owned by Warner Bros Discovery, and was simultaneously released on Max. Warner Bros Discovery owns Cartoon Network. The documentary puts emphasis on Nickelodeon being on the top of the children’s cable game, and often brings up the Disney Channel as Nick’s main competitor. At no point is Cartoon Network mentioned, because, well, nobody wants to say their competitor is doing better than them, and saying you’re doing better than Nickelodeon would defeat the documentary’s narrative.
My point is that I do not believe QUIET ON SET comes from a genuine place. It’s cheap schlock shock documentary filmmaking that wants to attract the same crowd who watch serial killer shows for fun.
However.
It’s also a space where a lot of people who were hurt during this time at Nickelodeon have come forward to tell their stories, and that pretty much nullifies all the gross exploitation elements present in the early parts. When these people start speaking for themselves, the documentary has no choice but to let them speak, and its more garbage instincts fade away. By the time Drake Bell starts telling his story, the gossip journalists all but vanish until the end, and there’s a stronger sensitivity to everything.
The topics raised are harrowing. Workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, child abuse, sexism on set, racism on set, and general mispractice paint a meaningful picture of the toxic environment Nickelodeon was allowing at this time. The stories told by AMANDA SHOW writers Christy Stratton and Jenny Kilgen are infuriating. And then the sexual assault of Drake Bell by Brian Peck. Not an easy watch. It shouldn’t be an easy watch. What a ****ing awful thing. It’s heartbreaking to watch.
The documentary handles it with an unexpected tact and evenhandedness. It doesn’t excuse Bell’s later behaviors, and it allows Schneider to come off as one of the few adults who handled the situation correctly, even if the rest of the documentary is largely against him. I wish this had been the tone of the entire piece.
QUIET ON SET is an important document of a terrible entertainment workplace. It’s a shame they dumped a bunch of trash on top of it. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s one of those things that’s going to be referenced to a lot over the years, and I hope that the people who make children’s television were learn the right lessons from it.

Like most of you this week, I've had my eyes glued to the new viral documentary series about Nickelodeon's abusive practices for child actors, Quiet on Set. The series examines controversial producer Dan Schneider, several convictions of assault against children, and even sexual abuse of child actors who we know and love from some of our favorite Nickelodeon shows growing up.
This series was incredibly eye opening, not just to hear the testimony of people like Drake Bell and former employees at the network, but also to understand the subtle innuendo we never picked up on as kids watching shows like iCarly, Victorious, Drake and Josh, and more that was intended to be inappropriate comedy---for CHILDREN.
Today, I'm sharing my thoughts on kids' television and entertainment and what we should have been more protected against, and showing YOU things you may not have picked up on at Nickelodeon when we were younger. Trust me, you don't want to miss this.

The docuseries "Quiet on Set" has brought attention to the toxic work environment under Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider, who left the network in 2018.
Marc Summers: I walked out on Quiet on Set because directors pulled a "bait and switch" and “ambushed” me (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/nickelodeon-marc-summers-quiet-on-set-interview-lied-1235960541/)
The former Double Dare host told the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, in a pre-taped interview airing Friday, that he didn't know he was participating in a docuseries about toxic behavior at Nickelodeon when he agreed to sit down with the directors of Investigation Discovery's Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (https://www.resetera.com/threads/%E2%80%98quiet-on-set-the-dark-side-of-kids-tv%E2%80%99-trailer-4-part-docu-series-about-dan-schneiders-nickelodeon-reign-out-mar-17.814758/page-4). The four-episode docuseries focused on abuses taking place after Summers' 1986-1993 tenure, and Summers says he's never met the docuseries’ main focus: Dan Schneider. “They asked me what I thought of Nick, and the first 10 to 12 seconds, from what I understand, in this documentary is me saying all these wonderful things,” said Summers. “But they did a bait and switch on me. They ambushed me (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/nickelodeon-host-marc-summers-walked-out-of-%E2%80%98quiet-on-set%E2%80%99-interview-says-doc-pulled-a-%E2%80%98bait-and-switch%E2%80%99-on-him-%E2%80%98they-lied-to-me%E2%80%99.5575061/). They never told me what this documentary was really about. And so they showed me a video of something that I couldn’t believe was on Nickelodeon. And I said, ‘Well, let’s stop the tape right here. What are we doing?'” Summers added that he was told six weeks ago that he wouldn't be in the docuseries. But then four weeks ago he was told he'd only appear in the first part to discuss the positive aspects of Nickelodeon in its early days. “What they didn’t tell me — and they lied to me about — was the fact that they put in that other thing where they had the camera on me when they ambushed me," said Summers. "And so, now we get into a whole situation about who’s unethical.” In Quiet on Set, Summers can be seen watching a suggestive Nickelodeon clip on a phone, asking: “Did that air on Nickelodeon?”

Hawkee 04-12-2024, 02:49 AM When you get the general picture child stars are usually the targets of TV networks to make millions and billions of dollars to help the networks make more money. As we have seen with Disney Channel sitcoms and original movies the child actors are usually cast in their sitcoms and movies to help make the sitcom or original movie a strong hit. Take a look at Hilary Duff who starred in Lizzie McGuire and she was the queen of Disney Channel and released music albums but after Lizzie McGuire was cancelled Hilary Duff had somewhat outgrew her teen audience and the same thing happened to Raven Symone when she joined Disney Channel at 16 after being absent since The Cosby Show's ending in 1992 and when That's So Raven debuted Raven became a rising star and she also released albums and was one of The Cheetah Girls. And speaking of The Cheetah Girls how they became a actual real group is beyond me because of the hit movie trilogy of The Cheetah Girls and you hardly ever saw The Cheetah Girls do few things for Disney and when High School Musical debuted we were introduced to Corbin Bleu Ashley Tisdale and Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and it seemed that the only stars that took off were Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale and you don't hear about Corbin Bleu anymore or Lucas Grabeel. But Nickelodeon has always promoted rising stars by choosing actors and actresses from commercials and when Dan Schneider came to Nickelodeon he came with a mission and that mission was to create new sitcoms and ideas for Nickelodeon by making child actors hit stars in his sitcom creations. Starting with ICarly he made Miranda Cogsgrove a big star and she became a singer as well. Happy with ICarly Dan went on to create Victorious which made stars out of Victoria Justice and Ariana Grande and Ariana Grande was Nickelodeon's biggest star and now is more popular than ever. Another thing that Dan Schneider did for Nickelodeon was to market his sitcom stars in Nickelodeon shows other than sitcoms which was putting them in celebrity editions of Nickelodeon game shows from the Liza Koshy Double Dare to Brainsurge and when you look at it I think Nickelodeon was trying to copy Disney Channel by having their own celebrity teen stars but if you were a child star avoid Nickelodeon. Because I think Nickelodeon gives teen and child stars little money for their sitcoms and they ruin their careers for good. And I think when Dan Schneider was running the show at Nickelodeon I think he had plans to secretly hope to someday become president of Nickelodeon

Is the Era of the Child Star Over? (https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/industry/child-stars-history-disney-channel-nickelodeon-quiet-on-set-explained-legacy)
From Hannah Montana to Zendaya, we grew up with famous tweens on our screens, but kids today don't have that same representation
By Kathryn Porter | April 9, 2024 | 12:15pm
If you ask anyone who grew up in front of a TV in the 1990s or 2000s who their favorite child star was when they were a kid, they are sure to pick someone from a massive Rolodex of answers. A self-proclaimed ‘90s kid might throw out a name like Britney Spears, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or Macaulay Culkin. Someone born on the cusp of the millennium could pull a name from a long list of children’s programming that aired during the first decade of the 21st century—Raven-Symoné, Miley Cyrus, Keke Palmer—and a person who falls solidly in the center of Gen Z may bring up Zendaya, China Anne McClain, or Skai Jackson.
The child star industrial complex was booming for almost three decades, giving Millennials and Generation Z tons of programming that they could see someone their age in. While recent conversations about representation have been focused (rightfully) on matters of race, disability, sexuality, and gender, there is also a conversation to be had about how we represent children in media. While it is not something we often talk about, all children are marginalized, regardless of race or class. They cannot exert any control over the world they live in no matter where they live because they are children, and that means that they are always at the mercy of adults when it comes to all matters.
Children deserve to see themselves on screen as much as anyone else, in programming that is written specifically for them—and, for a while, they did. The Disney Channel aired anywhere between 3 to 5 child-centric sitcoms in the 2000s with that number rising to as high as 9 in the mid-to-late 2010s. Combined with the live-action programming on Disney XD and a swath of Dan Schneider-led Nickelodeon shows, the child star factory churned along. Even kids with no cable in their home could watch TV at a friend’s house, and Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, iCarly, and Victorious were just a few of the shows that were the center of children’s pop culture.
Many of these actors started expansive careers in their teens that mirror the trajectories that members of the All-New Mickey Mouse Club shot off on. Miley Cyrus’ blonde alter ego broke onto the Billboard Hot 100 ten times while Hannah Montana was on the air and was the focus of both Hannah Montana: The Movie—a film that stars Taylor Swift pre-Grammy win and VMA incident—and a live concert movie that recouped its budget ten times over. Disney and Nickelodeon also built musical careers for Selena Gomez, Miranda Cosgrove, Demi Lovato, Jennette McCurdy, Victoria Justice, and anyone else who was a lead in a popular show or movie. At one point, all three leads of Hannah Montana were releasing music under Disney’s watch, and if you throw a dart at a wall of Disney kids who had a place on the channel anywhere from 2000 to 2017, you would probably hit someone with a single out. Disney also had a hand in boosting the careers of Justin Bieber and The Jonas Brothers by way of Radio Disney (which ceased operation in 2021), a place where clean versions of pop music played alongside Disney music from their theatrical feature films and child star prospects. Nickelodeon’s reach into the music space was far less impactful, but several songs that were produced for Big Time Rush and Victorious made their way onto the Hot 100 as well.
The music, movies, and intra-network crossovers like iParty with Victorious put all of this kid’s media on the map for children and adults (childless or not) alike. Miley Cyrus would not have been the bane of parent watch groups if kids didn’t idolize her, but it has been over a decade since the stars we all associate with children’s media have been all over cable, and no one has come to replace them with the same fervor. Looking at Disney Channel’s roster of actors after Zendaya’s departure from the network, the figures that have found significant commercial success have significantly dwindled, and the Disney kid transition to musician and DCOM star has become non-existent. Stuck in the Middle was a major job for both Jenna Ortega and Ariana Greenblatt, but it was far from either’s breakout role the way Wizards of Waverly Place was for Selena Gomez. Andi Mack introduced us to Sofia Wylie, but she found her larger audience through Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series at the same time that Olivia Rodrigo launched herself to stardom. Sure, she was on Bizzardvark with Jake Paul, but she was well past that by the time she started on the path to where she is today.
When you peel everything back, two root causes have led to this downfall: social media and streaming services. Almost every house in the US has a TV, but not everyone has every streaming service, and kids have no financial power in their households. Disney+ had a decent offering of live-action programming for tweens that were released between 2019 and 2021, but all of those shows have ended, with only Goosebumps and Percy Jackson having futures in sight. These shows have tragically short seasons in comparison to the 25+ episodes Disney Channel fare regularly got. The lack of shows is compounded by the lack of episodes available of those shows, and the time it takes to produce new seasons leads to kids looking elsewhere for entertainment and role models. Truthfully, the cast of Percy Jackson are the only kids close to reaching the level of stardom we used to see, and they will likely stay that way because of their regular use of social media, the entertainment that the lack of traditional media drives children towards no matter how old. Family vloggers, teenage influencers, and Twitch streamers pull a lot of the attention that TV isn’t commanding. There have been many efforts to regulate what children can view online, but they are far from comprehensive, and there is another issue that comes with parents using their children for content, something that former Disney star Alyson Stoner actively lobbies against.
Before advocating for children to return to television, we must recognize that the laws currently in place are not sufficient for protecting child actors. Quiet on Set is evidence enough that the laws currently on the books are not enough to keep kids safe, and there are a plethora of stars who have come out in various ways to speak about the negative experiences they had as child actors. There are toxic sets everywhere, regardless of the ages of the actors, but children inherently lack the skills and the life experience to defend themselves. To advocate for more children to be on screen also means that their rights must be preserved while they work.
But even in spite of it all, children deserve to have celebrities their age to look up to. The child stars of the past were icons, but they were not cared for in the way they should have been. Moving forward, if a healthy structure can be provided in the creation of media for child audiences, the successes of the past could bring about a safer and better future for children’s media. There’s a long way to go still, but with the heightened awareness of on-set misconduct and a focus on bringing kids the media they deserve, a brighter future is hopefully on the horizon.

Investigation Discovery’s docuseries Quiet on Set (available to stream with a Max subscription) sparked a lot of conversations about child actors’ safety at Nickelodeon during the years of writer/producer Dan Schneider’s creative reign in the 2000s. But while some may have seen the project through an advocacy prism initially, issues have arisen. Most recently, a podcaster and financial expert claims her interview with former child star Jennette McCurdy was used against their wishes, while Even Stevens vet Christy Carlson Romano (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1c4r72g/christy_carlson_romano_says_she_rejected/) had some harsh words (https://www.reddit.com/r/Fauxmoi/comments/1c4krls/christy_carlson_romano_says_she_rejected/) for those who developed the project.

Dan Schneider Files LAWSUIT on Quiet on Set Producers for Defamation, Calls Nickelodeon Abuse Docuseries a ‘Hit Job’ (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/dan-schneider-sues-quiet-on-set-producers-defamation-1235988962/)
Dan Schneider has filed a defamation lawsuit against the producers of the Investigation Discovery docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which uncovered alleged abuse and misconduct at Nickelodeon and became Max’s biggest streaming title ever.
The lawsuit, obtained by Variety and filed by Schneider’s attorneys Jana Moser and Richard McKie, reads in part: “‘Quiet on Set’s’ portrayal of Schneider is a hit job. While it is indisputable that two bona fide child sexµal abusers worked on Nickelodeon shows, it is likewise indisputable that Schneider had no knowledge of their abuse, was not complicit in the abuse, condemned the abuse once it was discovered and, critically, was not a child sexµal abuser himself. But for the sake of clickbait, ratings, and views — or put differently, money — Defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through the false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that.”
“Quiet on Set” details Schneider’s rise as the creator and producer of Nickelodeon shows including “The Amanda Show,” “Drake & Josh,” “Zoey 101,” “iCarly,” “Victorious” and more. Former Nickelodeon writers, child stars and crew members appear in the five-episode series and accuse Schneider of creating a hostile work environment and sexualizing former child actors on television. (A representative for Schneider said in a statement to Variety at the time: “Everything that happened on the shows Dan ran was carefully scrutinized by dozens of involved adults, and approved by the network. If there was an actual problem with the scenes that some people, now years later are ‘sexualizing,’ they would be taken down, but they are not, they are aired constantly all over the world today still, enjoyed by both kids and parents.”)
Schneider himself said in a video posted after the launch of “Quiet on Set,” “Watching over the past two nights was very difficult. Facing my past behaviors, some of which are embarrassing and that I regret. I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology.”
Schneider’s lawsuit claims that the voiceovers and graphics in “Quiet on Set,” as well as the series’ trailer, “are purposefully and intentionally defamatory in that they falsely and repeatedly state or imply that Schneider is a child sexµal abuser and committed crimes in this regard — and have been interpreted as such by countless average, ordinary or reasonable viewers.”
In a separate statement to Variety, Schneider says: “Recently the docuseries ‘Quiet on Set’ highlighted mistakes I made and poor judgment I exhibited during my time at Nickelodeon, most of which happened decades ago during my early career as a producer, working on shows for Tollin/Robbins Productions. There is no doubt that I was sometimes a bad leader. I am sincerely apologetic and regretful for that behavior, and I will continue to take accountability for it. However, after seeing ‘Quiet on Set’ and its trailer, and the reactions to them, I sadly have no choice but to take legal action against the people behind it. In their successful attempt to mislead viewers and increase ratings, they went beyond reporting the truth and falsely implied that I was involved in or facilitated horrific crimes for which actual child predators have been prosecuted and convicted.”
Schneider continues: “I have no objection to anyone highlighting my failures as a boss, but it is wrong to mislead millions of people to the false conclusion that I was in any way involved in heinous acts like those committed by child predators. I owe it to myself, my family, and the many wonderful people involved in making these shows to set the record straight.”

Denberg, 48, claimed in an interview (https://www.reddit.com/r/Fauxmoi/comments/1crwp3y/all_that_star_lori_beth_denberg_says_nickelodeons/) with Business Insider that Schneider’s alleged abuse (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1crtfjs/all_that_star_lori_beth_denberg_says_nickelodeons/) began around her 19th birthday in 1995. At the time, she alleged Schneider — who was then the head writer of All That — asked for a meeting and showed her (https://www.reddit.com/r/entertainment/comments/1crtmko/all_that_star_lori_beth_denberg_says_nickelodeons/) clips of pornography on his computer.
Denberg, who appeared on All That from 1994 to 1998, claimed the "grand finale" of the clips was a video which depicted a woman performing oral sex on a donkey. She claimed, "I feel like that is the first time he preyed on me.”
The actress alleged that Schneider, 58, continued to lash out at her on set, played porn for her and once initiated phone sex. Denberg claimed she and Schneider had a "weird, abusive friendship,” noting their relationship turned sexual when she was around 19.
At the time, she alleged that they would discuss sexual topics, give each other massages and he would play porn on his computer when she spent late nights or slept over at the producer’s home. However, she noted the pair were not sexually intimate.
Denberg claimed that changed when she was 20 or 21 after Schneider allegedly made a bet with her while watching Jeopardy! with the winner getting a massage. After she won, he allegedly fondled and put his mouth on her breasts during the incident.
Denberg admitted that she didn’t find these experiences inappropriate at the time but later saw the power imbalance at play, claiming, “I couldn't have been more green. I couldn't have been more vulnerable."
Denberg recalled an alleged incident with Schneider in which he asked a group of writer and crew members if they thought her breasts were different sizes during a group dinner. She noted that she threw a piece of bread at him in an effort to stop the conversation but he allegedly then screamed at her and stormed out of the restaurant.
“It was one of those turns that was just really upsetting and scary,” she claimed. “Everyone else seemed to completely blow it off.”
In another alleged incident, Denberg describes driving with Schneider to an auto repairman when they were pulled over by police. She alleged that Schneider had a gun and made her conceal it under skirt so the officer wouldn’t see it.
Schneider responded to Denberg’s allegations in a statement to PEOPLE, saying, “Lori Beth’s accusations of me are wildly exaggerated and, in most cases, false.”
“The fact that an Executive Producer of Quiet on Set would pursue allegations regarding what may have happened between adults nearly thirty years ago — only a week after I filed a defamation lawsuit accusing Quiet on Set of being intentionally false and misleading — seems more than coincidental,” the statement continues.
“As I have previously stated, there were times, particularly in the early years of my career, that I made mistakes and exhibited poor judgment as a leader,” the statement concludes. “If I did that with respect to Lori Beth, I sincerely apologize to her. But I cannot apologize for things I did not do.”
A spokesperson at Nickelodeon did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Of her decision to come forward, Denberg said she hopes it encourages others to feel safe speaking their truths as well. She explained, “There’s right and wrong, and there’s true and false.”
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which debuted on Investigation Discovery on March 17, was viewed by more than 16 million people. It featured plenty of bombshells, including an interview with Drake & Josh star Drake Bell, who spoke out about being sexually assaulted by Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck when he was 15, and the sexism accusations against Schneider made by female writers on The Amanda Show.
After the first two episodes premiered, Schneider released an on-camera video responding to the disturbing revelations the series publicized. "Facing my past behaviors, some of which are embarrassing and that I regret. I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology," he said, in part, later adding that his past actions were "wrong" and he'd "never do it today."
On May 1, Schneider filed a defamation lawsuit against the producers of the series, claiming they falsely implied he sexually abused Nickelodeon's child actors and attempted to associate the Nickelodeon showrunner with two convicted child sex offenders — Peck and Jason Handy.
"Schneider had no knowledge of their abuse, was not complicit in the abuse, condemned the abuse once it was discovered and, critically, was not a child sexual abuser himself," the filing read.

Dan Schneider Allowed to Pursue Defamation Suit Over ‘Quiet on Set’ Documentary, Calls Nickelodeon Abuse Docuseries a ‘Hit Job’ (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/dan-schneider-allowed-to-pursue-defamation-suit-over-%E2%80%98quiet-on-set%E2%80%99-documentary-calls-nickelodeon-abuse-docuseries-a-%E2%80%98hit-job%E2%80%99.5778149/)
A judge has allowed (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/dan-schneider-allowed-defamation-lawsuit-quiet-on-set-documentary-1236191171/) showrunner Dan Schneider to proceed with his defamation lawsuit over the documentary “Quiet on Set,” which delved into sexual misconduct at Nickelodeon.
Schneider, the creator of numerous Nickelodeon shows across two decades, called the documentary a “hit job,” saying it falsely suggested either that he was a sexual abuser or was aware that two sexual abusers had been hired on his shows.
In a ruling issued Friday, Judge Ashfaq G. Chowdhury found that Schneider’s claims are not frivolous, and that a “reasonable viewer” might conclude that the documentary makes “damning implications about his conduct.”
The judge denied a motion filed by attorneys for Warner Bros. and Sony, which had sought to throw out the suit under the state anti-SLAPP statute, which bars litigation intended to chill speech on matters of public concern. They argued that the documentary did not actually accuse Schneider of sexual abuse.
Chowdhury wrote that Schneider’s lawyers had argued “persuasively that defamation can be implied, that the trailer and documentary state or imply Schneider sexually abused children who worked on his show and that Schneider was a child sexµal abuser.”
“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” was released in March on Investigation Discovery and Max. It drew on a 2022 Business Insider piece, which reported that Schneider engaged in volatile and bullying behavior on set, and that he created a “maddening, disgusting, controlling little bubble,” in the words of one former writer.
Some former staffers also complained of overly sexualized material, which they found inappropriate for young audiences.
Nickelodeon cut ties with Schneider in 2018 after an internal investigation into verbal abuse. The investigation found no evidence of sexual misconduct between Schneider and any child actors. Schneider has repeatedly denied many of the allegations, though he has also apologized for making people feel uncomfortable and for asking for neck massages on set.
The documentary delved into the cases of Brian Peck, a former dialogue coach on “The Amanda Show,” and Jason Handy, a former production assistant. Both were later prosecuted for child sex abuse.
In the lawsuit, Schneider alleged that the series juxtaposed him with both men, implying that he, too, is a sexual abuser or was in some way responsible for their conduct. Even without accusing Schneider of sexual abuse, the suit alleged that the show created a “defamatory implication.”

JamesG 03-18-2025, 06:37 AM Drake Bell Reflects on "Quiet On Set" a Year after Docuseries’ Release: “A Roller Coaster of Emotions”
by Natalie Oganesyan
March 17, 2025
In a sit-down a year after the release of Investigation Discovery’s "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV", Drake Bell — whose revelations of experiencing sexual abuse at the hands of his former Nickelodeon dialogue coach/manager Brian Peck triggered massive shockwaves throughout the industry — said he has experienced “a roller coaster of emotions” amid the support he’s received.
“It’s been a really nice weight lifted,” he told People. “It’s a roller coaster of emotions. I don’t want to sugarcoat it and make the message, ‘Hey, all you got to do is just tell somebody and get your story out and when you wake up the next day, it’s going to be gone and everything’s going to be fine and you’re going to walk through life without any pain or sorrow or sadness!’
It’s always going to be there, but it’s a lot nicer getting support.”
