View Full Version : The Value of Love
EwansGirl 09-18-2002, 12:38 PM this is just the first paragraph... i want to see if anyone wants to read it... i know some people may have already seen this fic at fanfiction.net, but i want to post all of it here because no one goes there very much. and a note to the other ewan lovers. i had him in mind when i wrote the character of Rick. just tell me whatcha think :D
When Rick got a job at the Division, he was just trying to feed himself and pay doctor bills until he went into the hospital for the last time. But an attraction brought him to Jinny and he decided to risk it.
The first time he asked her out, he was turned down. Not that he really cared. It was going to end soon anyway. Still, something told him to try again.
TeddyisMINE!!!! 09-18-2002, 02:40 PM go on, go on, go on, go on,.........go on!

EwansGirl 09-18-2002, 08:35 PM YAY!! PPL ARE INTRESTED!!! hehe.. ok im done. here's more of my actual story!
Jinny looked up at him and sighed. “Back again I see.”
He grinned at her enthusiasm and knelt on the floor. “Yup. I got tickets to a ballet so I was hoping you had a good suicide method.”
Jinny looked at him and grinned a little. “Go to the ballet. That’ll bore you to death.”
Laughing, he took the tickets out of his pocket and ripped them in half. “I’d rather not die before I need to. So, are you busy tonight?”
She thought for a second. “No, but I could change that if you are going to ask me out again.”
He laughed a little bit and knelt closer whispering in her ear. “Pwity pweeze? I’m a nice guy I pwomise.”
Jinny laughed a little bit, then got serious. “That’s the problem.”
Rick grinned. “Then I’m a mean guy. Whatever you want I’ll be just go out with me.”
She smiled. “Fine I’ll go out with you.”
He grinned. “Dinner or a movie?”
She looked up into his blue-green eyes. “I was thinking that you’d walk me to my car.”
He was surprised at this. “That’s it?”
She grinned. “Well, what did you expect?”
“Maybe an actual date?”
Jinny stopped grinning. “Fine.”
He smiled.
“Walk me home then.”
He stopped smiling and shook his head. “That’s not a date.”
Jinny grinned. “It is to me.”
Giving up he looked her in the eye. “Fine. But for the second date can I walk you around the park first?”
Laughing, Jinny shook her head. “How about dinner instead?”
He grinned and nodded. “Fine. I like a woman who can ask a guy out.” He laughed a little, stood and walked back to his desk.
hehehe... ok tell me what you think and if i should post the date
;)
EwansGirl 09-20-2002, 11:41 AM even though no one replyed, i'll just post more to humor the ppl that read without posting responses (like me...) *guilty smirk that changes to an innocent grin* :loveya:
Later that evening, after work. Rick was getting ready to pick Jinny up at the address she gave him.
He put on a dark blue shirt with khakis and the silver necklace he always wore underneath his shirt. Not that he thought it was cool or anything, it was just necessary.
That necklace would become very valuable to Jinny.
He walked out of his door and climbed into his black Saturn. He turned it on and drove towards Jinny’s apartment building.
She was sitting on the couch in the living room waiting for that knock that meant that Rick was there and ready.
She heard a knock and stood up to open the door.
Rick stood waiting outside holding a single white rose.
She swung the door open and saw him standing there looking very handsome. “Hey.”
He smiled a little bit. “Hi.” He brought the rose from behind his back. “Oh, uh, this is for you.”
She took the rose and smiled a little bit. “Uh, thanks.”
He looked down shyly. “Your welcome.”
Rick took Jinny’s arm and they walked out to his car. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door for her. She climbed in. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” He walked around to the driver’s side and climbed in. He started the car and drove off.
Jinny looked over at him. “Why do you always wear that necklace? If you don’t mind that is…”
Rick looked into the rearview mirror then at Jinny, then at the road. “I have to. It’s a medic alert pendant.”
Jinny nodded. “Why do you need it?”
Rick sighed. “I didn’t want to tell you so soon, but I guess it’s your right to know… Jinny… I’m dying.”
hehehe... now will someone respond? respond or you wont know what he has!!!

oh well... here's more... and those of you who already read it... i changed it a lil...
Jinny looked at him in shock. “What?”
Rick pulled into the parking lot of their destination. “I’m dying. I have leukemia.”
As Rick parked, Jinny let what he had just said sink in. “I… I don’t know what to say.”
Rick opened his door and climbed out, then walked over to Jinny’s side and opened her door for her. “Say anything but ‘I’m sorry’. I don’t want anyone’s pity.”
Jinny got out of the car and she looked into his eyes. “Alright… but instead of dinner, could we go somewhere and talk?”
Rick nodded. “Whatever you want.”
They got back into the car and drove in silence, Jinny looking out the window to occupied in her thoughts to talk. They eventually got to their peaceful destination, the bay bridge.
Jinny looked over at him, noticing that he was looking out over the water. “I’m guessing you come here a lot too?”
He nodded, not taking his gaze from the peaceful calm of the water. A slight breeze blew over it, making ripples in the reflection of the moon in it’s surface.. “I have a lot to think about. It’s a peaceful place.”
Jinny smiled. “I agree. I love it here.”
Rick turned the car off and looked down at the keys in his hands. “Sometimes… sometimes I think there’s no point you know? Just waking up every morning knowing that you’re gonna die. Just living each day thinking ‘what if the doctor was wrong? What if this is my last day?’ ya know?” He trailed off as one tear made a silent path down his cheek.
Jinny had never seen him upset before, and it scared her. “There is a point Rick. Each day that you’re alive you change someone’s life.”
He looked at her. “That may be. But when I die think of all that I leave behind. Each day I live, each day I make new friends I make more people to feel pain when I die.”
Jinny shook her head. “Everyone will miss you, but you still have time.” She brought her hand up to his cheek and touched it slightly before she put it back down in her lap. “Think of all that you can do during the time you still have.”
Rick looked down. “A month. I have a month. They can’t find a donor of the same blood type as me. That’s why I’m dying. No one cares.”
Jinny moved her hand from her lap to take his hand. “People do care Rick… I know they do…”
He smiled and tightened his grip on her hand. “Thank you Jinny.”
As they walked along the edge of the bay, looking up at the stars, Jinny thought about what would happen when Rick did die. She also thought about his not being able to find a donor.
“Rick, what about your family. Can’t they be donors?”
Rick shook his head. “I’m adopted. Orphaned actually.”
Jinny looked down feeling sorry for him. “Oh.”
Rick nodded. “Well, my adoptive family is good enough for me. They love me and take care of me… and since I never knew my real parents it doesn’t really bug me that I’m not a blood relative of their’s… What about you? What’s your family like?”
Jinny tensed some at the question and looked down, then up at the night sky. She sighed. “I was wondering when you were gonna get to that… I have two brothers… Casey and John Jr. Casey’s a great guy but he’s gay so John Jr beat him up because of it. There’s a constant feud goin on between them.”
He looked down. “What about your parents?”
She sighed again. “My mom died when I was 14. After that, my dad started drinking more heavily then he used to… not that there was that much of a difference…”
Rick looked over at her and noticed a tear falling down her cheek. He reached up and wiped it away. “Everyone has their ups and downs in life. It may seem you have more downs then everyone else, but you don’t. Everyone is eventually balanced out.”
She kissed his cheek. “Thanks, Rick.”
He smiled in reply to the kiss and looked at the ground, blushing though she couldn’t tell in the dim light of the stars. “No problem.”

Jinny woke up the next morning to the aggravating beep of her digital alarm clock. Her arm ventured out of the warmth of the blanket to shut it off and she patted the right side of her bed to see if it is occupied. Discovering it wasn’t she threw the covers off and looked around for a minute, disoriented. She then remembered the events of the previous night and the fact that it did not end in sex. She slowly rose to a standing position and moved toward the bathroom for a shower.
Rick woke up not long after Jinny to the tune of his favorite CD. He reached his arm out of the blanket to find the remote to the TV and turned it on. He threw the covers off and turned off the CD player as he listened to the morning news. As the announcer went through the weather, he took out his clothes and shoes, then his pendant. He crossed to the closet and took out a towel, then went into the bathroom for his shower.
Once at the Division, Jinny opened her locker and put in all the items she would not need for now and closed it. She then crossed to the door and left to go to her desk. As she was walking through the hall, Rick entered and ran into her. Rick stumbled back and fell into a wall. “Heh, sorry Jinny. I didn’t see you. Are you alright?”
Jinny smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine.” She paused, looking around them to avoid his eyes.
“I had a great time at the lake last night, Jinny.” These words caused Jinny to look up into his eyes. She barely managed to whisper, “I did to.” He looked down at her and neither of them could move for a moment. They were absorbing every second of this and were very much caught up in the moment.
Jinny turned away. “I really should go…” She walked away quickly to avoid talking about it further.

When Jinny got to her desk, she sat down and began to write on a piece of paper that contained the case that she was currently working on. She turned around only to be greeted by Magda’s wide grin. She laughed slightly and smirked. “I’m not gonna tell ya, Mag.”
Mag frowned at her. “Come on… How’d it go?”
Jinny sighed and gave in to Magda. “It went terrible… he’s a perfect guy… sweet considerate…”
Mag looked at her quizzically. “Well… if he’s so great then how can you say it went terrible?”
Jinny frowned noticeably and turned to her desk. “It just did. Now I have work to do and so do you. Do it.”
Mag, realizing she wouldn’t get anything more from Jinny, turned her chair around and rolled back to her desk.
Jinny was unable to concentrate on her work. She kept glancing at Rick, who was working at a desk near the corner of the room. After a minute or so, Jinny was distracted from the work she was finally able to concentrate on by coughing coming from Rick’s direction. She turned to discover him coughing violently into his hand. The coughs racked his body so hard he had trouble keeping his hand over his mouth. Jinny stood and rushed over to him. She put one arm on his back, trying to see if he would be ok. “Rick?”
Rick looked up at Jinny and forced a slight smile through the coughs, then promptly passed out onto the desk. Jinny reached down and checked for a pulse, then picked up the phone to call an ambulance.

EwansGirl 10-27-2002, 09:26 PM okies... here's more
Once the ambulance arrived, Rick was revived by the paramedics and he sat on the stretcher drinking a cup of water. Jinny was finally able to get to him and took his hand. “Are you alright? Geeze don’t do that…”
Rick smiled somberly and nodded. “Jinny… I don’t have long left… I can tell… I don’t think we should see each other…”
Jinny nodded and turned to leave, then changed her mind and turned back around. “K. You know what, Rick? I’m not gonna let ya give up that easily. It’s fine with me if you don’t want to see me but I won’t let you cut yourself off… it’s not fair to you.”
Rick shook his head. “No. It’s not fair to you. I can’t die and leave you here halfway through a relationship. No decent man would do that and…” He trailed off and looked down at his hands not wanting to let Jinny know what he was thinking.
Jinny cocked her head to the side in confusion. “Rick… what aren’t you telling me?” She bent down to look him straight in the eye. He looked away.
He looked up, above her head, and a tear silently fell down his cheek. He wiped it away with the palm of his hand as her replied. “I have two daughters, Jinny. Their names are Danielle and Kathryn… Ellie and Kat for short.” He smiles slightly at the memory of his girls in his head. “They’re twins… They don’t know I’m dying… they’re only three…”
okies... i'll update later
KimFieldsFan637 10-30-2002, 09:58 PM :( :( :( :( mooorrrrreeee
Ewan's My Man 10-30-2002, 11:03 PM *sniffle* Death...sux...so does cancer...
EwansGirl 11-06-2002, 02:16 PM heres more....
Jinny raises her hand and knocks on Rick’s door. She is there to meet his children and talk to him. She smiles slightly at the sound of him singing, then knocks louder on his door to let him know that she is there. She hears the guitar stop abruptly and the door opens not long after. Rick smiles at her and lets her in. “Hi Jinny…”
A little red-headed girl runs over, she looks to be around three. One of the twins, Jinny supposes. She looks up at Jinny, so Jinny kneels onto her knees to be at her level. “Hi… I’m Jinny. What’s your name?”
She smiles. “I’m Ellie.” The small child points to a shivering blanket covered lump on the couch. “That’s Kathryn. She’s scared of you cause your new here.”
A head pops out of the blanket. She looks exactly like Ellie, but with shorter hair. When she looks at Jinny, her eyes go wide and she goes back under the blanket. Jinny smiles and sits next to the shivering mound on the couch. She gently touches the head-like appendage and whispers, “It’s ok Kathryn… I won’t hurt you… I’m a friend of your dad’s.”
The head pops back out and looks at her, apparently sizing her up to see if she can trust her. Kathryn appears satisfied and crawls out from under the blanket. She sits on her knees, watching Jinny. Ellie, not being as apprehensive as Kathryn, crawls into Jinny’s lap and settles down. Jinny looks down at the comfortable three year old and smiles. Rick looks at her, then to Jinny and laughs slightly. “She loves everybody… now… Kathryn here is a little more hesitant.”
Jinny smiles at Kathryn, who looks at her for a moment, then smiles back and crawls to sit next to Jinny. Jinny puts her arm around Kathryn, who settles into her and closes her eyes.
Rick laughs again. “I guess she saw that I like you…”

DON'T KILL HIM!!! I'll cry!!
KimFieldsFan637 11-07-2002, 08:15 PM Yeaa It's hard to kill off a character...I'm writing a book called "A christmas Wish' and there's this lil daddy's girl - Emily - and her dad and mom have like a perfect relationship, but my plans were to kill him off...so now i have to try to figure that out...i dont think i can do it :( LOL - anyways...if u dont HAVE to kill him than don't, maybe u can make it that the only reason Rick was dying was becuz he didn't think he had anything to live for, even though he does have his kids, but maybe he was missing something..or someone...and jinny is the inspiration he needed not to give up...just a suggestion - but keep posting!!
