The Oscar-nominated, Tony-winning Welsh actress, best known for her role in Mary Poppins as the spirited feminist mother Winifred Banks, died today of natural causes. The year before Mary Poppins premiered, Johns starred in the short-lived Glynis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T1zIzAfyEM), a CBS sitcom built around her created by I Love Lucy head writer Jess Oppenheimer, in which she plays a mystery writer who solves crimes alongside her husband. Glynis aired on CBS from September through December 1963. Johns returned to CBS 25 years later in 1988 to star in another short-lived sitcom: the retirement community-set Coming of Age (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7-1Q0G4s9o). Johns also had numerous guest TV roles, including as Diane Chambers' mom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N5cLNI1Xbs) on the first season of Cheers.

It's hard to believe that Glynis Johns made it to 100 and I was surprised that she was still making appearences in TV and movies. I remember Glynis from Mary Poppins because of the song she sung and when she sings that song I always sing along with her and I didn't know Glynis Johns could sing so perfectly with perfect pitch. I do remember her from Cheers when she guest starred as Diane Chambers mother and was surprised that Glynis was still active in movies and TV and I thought she retired after Mary Poppins. How did Glynis Johns audition for the role of Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins?
