David Soul, the actor best known for his role as Hutch in the television series Starsky & Hutch, has died at the age of 80.

His death was confirmed by his wife Helen Snell, who said in a statement: “David Soul - beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family.

“He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.

“His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”

Born in the US, Mr Soul became known for his role as Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in the 1970s television series Starsky & Hutch alongside Paul Michael Glaser who played Detective Dave Starsky.

He moved to the UK in the 1990s to pursue a career in the West End and later appeared in BBC shows Holby City and Little Britain.

David Soul also recorded "Don't Give Up on Us" in 1976 which became a number 1 hit in the US.

Sad to hear of his passing !:( I loved him as Hutch and also as Joshua on Here come the Brides. And he was a good singer .

“David was a brother, a friend, a caring man,” Glaser said in a statement to People (https://people.com/david-soul-strarsky-and-hutch-costar-david-soul-mourns-death-of-brother-exclusive-8423146). “We shall never see his like again.”

He added, “I find it difficult to comprehend David’s passing. Seems only yesterday that we were sharing loving insults on the phone.”

“It just takes time, I tell myself. Saying goodbye to such a dear friend and important part of my life, I suspect that I will let myself feel his loss, our loss, only gradually.”

Glaser, now 80, praised Soul’s wife, Helen Snell, who “loved and cherished” him and who “stood beside him through these difficult years.”

“He could never tell me enough what she meant to him,” he added. “To all his sons and his daughter China, my deepest sympathies.”

He concluded, “And to all of you, our supportive and caring public who recognized a very special relationship and never stopped telling us. Thank you. We have all lost a dear friend who shall live on in our memories.”
