In 1991 a wonderful doll was created by Tyco that would become popular with little girls for years to come. Her name was Kenya "named after the African country" and she was known as "The Beautiful Hairstyling Doll" because Kenya was a hairplay doll much like Hasbro's Aimee doll released in the 1970's. To honor Kenya's release Tyco debuted a special commercial designed for Kenya which showed all the neat accessories and hairstyles you could design for Kenya and each doll came with a bottle of Kenya's special Magic Lotion that you applied to your Kenya Doll's hair to straighten it and you could design hairstyles such as braids Bo Derek inspired cornrow braids and just like the Williams sisters add beads and gold extensions to Kenya's hair for more hairplay. As the Kenya line grew many styles of Kenya were introduced such as Color Me Kente Kenya Bedtime Kenya and Kenya's Cousins each with their own commercials along with an official slogan "Growing Up Proud" Kenya was also given siblings which were her adorable baby sister Baby Kiana who also had her own commercial and Simone who was Kenya's teenage big sister who was a Barbie sized doll that featured the same hairplay as Kenya. Tyco made Kenya from 1991 to 1997 but Kenya has made a comeback in the 2010's now as a Barbie sized doll who had friends as well as a boyfriend doll named TJ and the Kenya line is still strong today. Growing up you probably asked Santa for Kenya for Christmas and if you can find the commercials you'll see why Kenya was a popular doll of 90's toys
