View Full Version : Why is “The Honeymooners” Seemingly Forgotten Now? TMC 12-01-2023, 07:21 AM It arguably, never went on to become a classic like I Love Lucy or Bewitched, which are still beloved by audiences of all ages today. Why did it not age well? cloggedmind 12-04-2023, 07:49 AM There's still avid fans who enjoy the classic 39 as well as the kinescope versions and the later Gleason fare from his variety show-- I'm one of them. The main detractor to the show's appeal for modern audiences is that it is firmly locked in the 50's by design: The core values (the notion of the "man-of-the-house", although Alice won't have any of that nonsense!), chauvinistic approach, drab apartment with its even then outdated appliances and threadbare appearance. I've read a few articles about the series where the show was criticized for its lack of positive role models and all the shouting and conflict in many episodes. I'd argue that any Di$ney show produced in the last 20 years has had more shouting from the kid stars in character than anything from the Gleason shows. All of the kids in the Di$ney shows put on the "outdoor voice" 100% of the time. Plus, all the adult characters are written and treated like ignorant garbage to empower those spoiled, above-average-income kids who seem to live in lavish homes with all the latest games, gadgets, funds and modes of transport without the need for authority figures anyway. Back to The Honeymooners, many folks also tend to be put off by the so-called lost episodes from lesser quality kinescopes simply because they don't look picture-perfect and hi-def on modern sets, further detracting from the material presented. Availability of arguably the best material in those kinescopes has been spotty, as well, since the Showtime days, and when seen, those episodes are usually heavily edited to fit short time slots. The color episodes with the musical touches tend not to fare as well, either, as many people don't have the patience for the show-stopping numbers in each one that just seems to pad out the show. It is easy to forget, though, that those productions were part of what was a variety show, anyway, with numerous guests, songs and sketches that weren't related to The Honeymooners. |
