One problem was that sometimes a kind collector whould share something for free and then some dude would download it, and sell one or two copied DVDs for FAR too much money. That never felt right.

ok thank you. This person had some episodes of Star and the Story (Rheingold Theatre) and Alcoa Goodyear Playhouse (A Turn of Fate). Actually one episode in particular, but I don't see it on that website now. Thank you though, I think it was the same website.

Maybe that website just banned DVDR sales for legal reasons, that's also possible. Just like ioffer at one time, I think.

Oh there's still bootleg DVD sales happening on Ebay, one guy(who has apparently been active on that site since 2018) tried to rip me off by claiming he had the complete series of Cousin Skeeter and The Journey of Allen Strange. He did not and it looked like he ripped the episodes directly off Youtube, fortunately i was able to return both sets and get my money back(And fortunately I have since managed to find the entire series of Allen Strange).

I heard Ioffer stopped existing in it's original form not so much of cause the DVDs but because they were selling stuff like batteries which were going bad and could get them into legal trouble(And the fashion industry didn't like them selling designer clothes cheap, my sister used to buy clothes on there). Apparently they are back now and just selling clothes for now.

Looks like sell.com isn't doing DVD-Rs anymore either.

I offer was listing and selling knock offs on designer handbags and clothing and got caught doing it and in a sweep of the site they also caught the bootleg DVDs as well and shut the site down, I hear it’s back but nowhere like it used to be. Sell.com was never properly run right and was also listing fake knockoffs on jewelry, clothing, fashion, etc…. So that was shut down, some dealers have opened their own websites or some went to other sites one being Etsy and their selling Digital Downloads, which are nothing but compressed MP4’s on a USB Drive, most of the hardcore collectors are out of the game and retired from the hobby

Interesting. I got a lot of good , very rare stuff off of ioffer, but that is maybe going back to 2008 or 2009 and then for a few more years after that.

by the way, another trader happened to have the turn of fate episode I was looking for so I was able to find it.

I've heard of users on TV Vault and Cinemageddon selling shows and films from those sites on DVD-R and getting banned for it as a result.

You say "absurd prices" obviously don't understand how much overhead it costs to make/sell sets, Its' not just costs of discs, there's shipping & packaging, labels, cover-art (if you were into that), printer ink, listing costs on the site, fuel driving to post office, time & effort etc.

Doesn't sound specific, nor did the first post. What was on it? How many discs was it actually? 6 or 7? or 2? Was there cover-art? disc labels? Was it a rare show that's not available anywhere? People spend money on collections, or time and effort to record shows, they archive them, to storage them, equipment to transfer them etc, as well as packaging and shipping. You say "couple of discs". You're not seeing what goes into selling items. Yes couple blanks are pennies, everything else isn't.

People like you complain about business over charging products in the real world and say "It's cheaper at walmart, or cheaper on amazon". Why do you think that is? They can buy in bulk and house/storage millions of the same product versus smaller "mom and pop" stores where they are limited what they can order and store. More product you buy, the cheaper it is.

What's laugh-out-loud humorous is the claim that "hoarding" (bootlegging) costs money and there's overhead and production costs and, well, somebody's got to pay for it, right?!!

There are people I know who have openly shared their cloud drives, that they pay for, and share hundreds of thousands of hours' worth of audio and video.. at no charge! :eek:

I bet they could make bank at $25-75 or more per disc (or flash media or pay-for-access) that takes either no time to access, or about 4 minutes to record and at a cost - time + a lil' electricity about $0.30 for media. There are those who upload large files in thousands of little pieces on pay-per-click share sites, desperate to make money off of each segment downloadable, conveniently, at dial-up speed unless the end user buys a sponsored membership that further lines the pockets of the uploader (and still get's throttled after a certain amount of d/l time!). Shenanigans.

I think some folks get too wrapped up in the scene, with the mindset that they actually "own" the material they hold-- like they actually paid for and produced the tv shows/music and own some exclusive right to retire on sales based on their own dictated prices, always outside of legal sources.

Yes, Cletus, I do have access to free storage. I also pay, myself, with money I earn at a job (!) for physical storage, editing and authoring software, AND I have free cloud storage. I also share Google drive space with other collectors that will not be shared with you and many others.

Mega.nz is one I still use a little.. It used to be a good site, but it kinda stinks now. They throttle d/l speeds and throw out tactics to try to get paid subscriptions. I've used that site and Google Drive to share files here, like the reconstructed Gimme A Break episode ("Who Dunnit?" with Ray Parker, Jr.) that was edited in the dvd releases. Didn't charge a bit. Did it for my own enjoyment and for complete-ness' sake.

And, I had to take the time to find and collect the elements, assemble them in an editor, do some cheap clean-up, color adjust to my taste to make all the elements fit, and fix geometric/capture errors in the source material to make a fairly seamless presentation. All that 'spensive 'tricity and time for 2-3 minutes of trims.. And, the link to the episode is still up months later! Wow! Mega is still crap, but 'tis but one free option.

And, and.. The show's on Youtube with a copyright restriction-- that means the copyright holder makes money off the ads, not me. And, and.. I don't care! I just like having the thing "out there"! So many free options..

What does that do? Where do you store Tb's of archives for free (without making multiple accounts)? Not many places conveniently . I'm sure it works well for you and the small collections you are able to obtain, but that wasn't the point was it?
