Singer and actress Michelle Phillips is turning 74 today. Phillips learned to play piano and guitar while in high school, and after graduating she met, and married, folksinger John Phillips. The couple moved to New York, and in 1965, John and Michelle Phillips joined with Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot to form The Mamas & The Papas. Their first hit single, “California Dreamin’,” was released in December 1965, and reached #4 on the Hot 100. That began a period of 18 months during which they had seven singles reach #5 or higher and three albums hit 4th or better on the Billboard 200. One of them, their only #1 hit, won the band a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The Mamas & The Papas effectively broke up by the beginning of 1969, partly because the fast-changing sound of popular music at the time passed their “sunshine pop” by, and partly due to tensions within the group. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Michelle Phillips had a brief, and unsuccessful, recording career as a solo artist. Phillips did, however, go on to a fairly good acting career. She was a Golden Globe nominee for Most Promising Newcomer as Billie Frechette in John Milius’s Dillinger in 1973; she later had major roles in films such as Valentino and The Man with Bogart’s Face. On television, Phillips was a regular on Knots Landing for three seasons, and on the short-lived Malibu Shores as the mother of Keri Russell’s character.
