"A marvelous world of fun fashion and success" So began the slogan for a new Mattel doll that debuted in 1991 known as Shani. Following the success of Barbie's successful 90's year Mattel decided to introduce a new doll that had a unique style all her own and so Shani was born. To launch the doll to stores Mattel created an awesome commercial just for Shani. Now Shani who's name shockingly enough means marvelous in the Swahili language was a doll who was a trendsetter and always wore the most amazing fashions and is always ready to go out for a night on the town in her outfit that when you see the commercial can transform into a gown or hooded wrap. But Shani wasn't the lone doll in the line she also had two friends named Asha "not the Disney's Wish character" and Nichelle "probably named after Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols" that had their own outfits and unique hair accessories as well. Later the Shani line grew with Shani's own car and her wonderful boyfriend Jamal "who looks like Jamie Foxx" were added and were so cool. Later Shani dolls included Beach Dazzle Shani which had it's own commercial Beach Streak Shani which had blonde streaks in her hair and the final Shani doll which was Soul Train Shani which was based on the popular Soul Train show. Though a big seller for Mattel in 1991 Shani was discontinued in 1996 but if you get a chance take a look at this commercial and you'll see what made Shani dolls so wonderful
