View Full Version : What age do you consider someone to be a senior citizen?
I came across the The SENIORSonly CLUB (Seniors Only Club) forum. I think it has been mentioned on here before. I see some familiar members and threads over there.

I will be turning 50 next year. Since when is 50 considered being a senior citizen?? What the heck.
I thought you had to be of retirement age, or a person that has reached age 62 or older to be considered a senior citizen.
What age do you consider someone to be a senior citizen? I voted for 65.
When age did you start feeling older? I started feeling older at around 35-36 when there were professional sports players half my age.
dakert 11-03-2023, 04:43 PM Age 50 you can join AARP
icecream 11-03-2023, 05:15 PM 60 is the absolute minimum, but I could see it starting at 65 as well. No way are those in their 50s senior citizens yet.
JamesG 11-03-2023, 06:23 PM Age 50 you can join AARP
Though AARP caters towards people 50+, they have no minimum age requirement.
A friend of mine has been a member for years to take advantage of the discounts.
Foggy 11-04-2023, 12:44 PM I choose OTHER
Because I avoid ageist stereotypes.:wave:
Foggy 11-04-2023, 01:17 PM The average retirement age in the U.S. is now 61.
So, some people think after you RETIRE
(but that could be at any age)
Maybe after reaching social security eligibility.
Those turning 62 who meet the eligibility criteria can start receiving Social Security benefits.
The government says:
Three months before a person turns 65, they can enroll in Medicare for the first time.
Today for a person to get full social security,
you need to be somewhere between 67 to 70.
Personal, I have been a "SENIOR CITIZEN"
since I graduated high school. (GET IT?):lol::lol::lol::p
I will soon be 63, my wife is 68, but if you would see a picture of us,
you would say we couldn't be that old!
Most people would guess we are only 50.

I never joined AARP and they tried to get me, I don't need them, and what discounts have I missed...can't imagine any....
I don't know when the Senior Citizen handle took over, but before, people were older or of old age status....

You say you are going to be 50, is that what I understand....you bring in stuff from the Seniors site so I'm a tad confused...then you say you felt getting old at 35 or thereabouts. I was thinking of writing a book back then and title it Forever 39, as I was so young in so many ways ...
I still don't feel mentally old at 85, but body has been crying since hip job at 72 and all the damage I live with. My neighbor who came across so strong and alert just died at 96 after 2 bad falls in 2 days. I miss her but what a long good life. She had some issues but managed them.
Bonniegirl 11-04-2023, 03:28 PM I voted 65, although I wish it were younger ! I wish we could start getting Medicare at 60, and have that be a good age to retire and still get your full money amount! I want so bad to early retire, but the money will be so much lower ! :(

There's a difference between starting to feel older and being put in the senior citizens group. I had a good chuckle when I read their introduction. I guess they had to expand it 50+ because limiting it to 65+ would decrease their membership pool.
I don't think many people would consider 50 year olds to be senior citizens. 65 is winning this poll in a landslide.
I'm glad there's a forum for you and your fellow senior citizens to mingle and discuss the important issues.

My last employer pulled one on me and let me go at 62, I was going to hang in until 65 but she had other plans for me. I sued them and got a settlement and that helped and made me feel GOOD.
From 62 to 65 I did FT and PT childcare for cash and that was a great filler for the SS I took at 62.. It's worked out and I'm alone , no one helps me and I chose NOT to buy all the costly tech gadgets thrown at us over the years....

My uncle way back in the mid-1960s was let go by the Bendix Corporation just one day before he turned 40. The thing behind it was that, by his not reaching age 40 with the company, he was denied a pension. He'd been with Bendix for over 10 years. My dad urged him in later years to sue, but he never did.

Caroline13 11-04-2023, 09:58 PM Heard an interview with this 106 yr woman on NPR today, she died at 107 and played piano daily and watched The Bachelor. She sounded sharp...

My suit was pushed by my son in law and a dept of employment and the felllow I was seeing was a retired attorney and he got involved....wrote a strong letter and made it sound like a real hardship that I was let go, I was a good worker and it was definitely age discrimination. The boss said she was "cleaning house"....

Forget the Israel/Palestine issue, we have our own contentious topics on "Who Should/Shouldn't be Hosting Jeopardy!" or if Chrissy Snow should have been killed off of "Three's Company".

Pretty much everyone says it. But if you think that’s gonna persuade TVFactFan……
AMackII 11-07-2023, 10:53 AM I voted other due to people in their 60s, 70s & 80s are senior citizens
Fleet 11-07-2023, 06:28 PM 70 for sure. Not sure about 65 since that is close to my age! Probably 67+, too.

I chose 55 to because in Walgreens, people who are at least 55 get Senior Discounts!:)
Gibson Girl 11-08-2023, 04:12 PM I voted for 65. 50 is more middle-age.
Gibson Girl 11-08-2023, 04:21 PM I hear that. I feel like I live in the hot tub when i'm at home to ease all the aches and pains.
50 is more middle-age.
Only if you live to 100
HarryWild 11-08-2023, 05:55 PM People bodies have aged more then they did 30 years ago! At even 45 years old now, people develop weakness in they muscles, not as flexible and cannot walk as well. Of course this due to people gaining 30+ pound and are not as active as they were back 30 years ago.
