View Full Version : Actors From TV's Black and White Era Who Are Still Alive
icecream 11-01-2023, 02:12 AM The Ruggles is one of TV's earliest sitcoms which aired from 1949-1952. Judy Nugent who played one of the little twins on it just died. That got me to wonder who all from TV's start before color shows came mid-60s is still around.

From Lassie, the actor is Jon Provost, who played Timmy.
From The Dick Van Dyke Show, we could add thar Larry Mathews is still alive, too.
From the 60s black and white shows, we could add that John Astin of the Addams Family is still with us, as is Pat Priest of The Munsters.
Without looking it up, I think Dwayne Hickman died a few years ago.
Dwayne Hickman died on January 9, 2022, at the age of 87.
His older brother, Darryl Hickman, is still living at age 92.
In 1959 and 1960, Darryl appeared on younger brother Dwayne's CBS sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, playing his older brother Davey in three different episodes ("The Right Triangle" (1959), "Deck the Halls" (1959), and "Where There's a Will" (1960)) during the first season while home on break from college before being written out of the show.

I thought of another one still with us from Leave It To Beaver - Pamela Baird.
From The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, only a few of the young kids who appeared at varying times are still alive: Barry and Stanley Livingston, Billy Mumy. I saw Kelly Corcoran (brother of Noreen Corcoran from Bachelor Father) on a season 13 episode recently at age 6--just looked him up and he died in 2002. There are other kids who appeared on that show who are probably still with us--another one I just thought of is Jerry Mathers, who appeared briefly in an around-1952 episode. Just thought of another one still alive--Roberta Shore.
Speaking of Bachelor Father I can think only of Ginny Tiu, a kid actor and pianist who appeared in only one episode, who is still with us.

Kent McCord made dozens of appearances (a semi-regular you might say) in the late Ozzie & Harriet seasons, in Ricky's college fraternity, and Kent is still with us.

There was an episode where Darrin (Dick York) was dreaming and Maureen was one of his future children, as a little witch flying around.

also Ann Marshall (on b & w My Favorite Martian)
Dianne3 11-06-2023, 04:50 PM About I Dream of Jeannie and Lost in Space, are posters here sure the first season was in b&w?
Colour started in 1965 (minus Bonanza) and that is the year IDOJ and LIS premiered.
The only person I can think of that wasn't yet mentioned, was the best friend of the original boy who owned Lassie. Is he still living? I think he changed his name as an adult.

Both of them changed over fall 1966. And The Patty Duke Show ended in 1966, all three seasons were black and white.

I didn't know that about IDOJ and Bewitched. I have never seen the Patty
Duke Show.
What I wonder is this. Someone asked on these boards why ABC cancelled My Three Sons since it was still doing good in the ratings in year 5. It was speculated that ABC didn't want to continue in color. Could that be the reason that Bewitched waited a year before they switched to color? Was Patty Duke on ABC? Since Bewitched didn't switch to color right away, the copycat IDOJ didn't either.
icecream 11-07-2023, 04:18 PM Yes, Patty Duke was on ABC.
24/7 reruns 11-07-2023, 05:07 PM I didn't know that about IDOJ and Bewitched.
I'm guessing you've been watching the colorized seasons of I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. You can watch the original b&w season 1 of I Dream of Jeannie on Tubi.
There is a channe on Roku called Classic TV l They have season 1 of Bewitched in b&w.
I can't find b&w episodes for season 2 or 3 for Bewitched. You can always remove the color on your TV and watch in b&w that way.
Patty McCormack and Reba Waters- Peck's Bad Girl
Margaret Kerry And Jimmy Hawkins- The Ruggles, mentioned earlier in this thread,
Sheila James was also on The Trouble With Father AKA The Stu Erwin Show, and her sister Jeri Lou James was on the aforementioned It's Always Jan.
By the way, Season 3 of Bewitched was the first in color, as stated before.

It's possible ABC set a budgetary limit on color programming for the 1965 season--and maybe the choice was between My Three Sons and Ozzie and Harriet. Maybe Ozzie Nelson had more pull, so ABC goofed and green-lighted color for them, and cancelled Sons.
Thr Bewitched black and white is a head-scratcher. It may have had something to do with Screen Gems. They may not have been prepared to film Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie on NBC, and Donna Reed in color (plus for the first two, there was the added special effects cost).
Whatever the reasoning, ABC bungled with Sons, Donna Reed and Ozzie and Harriet ended after that season, and virtually all primetime shows converted to color with the 1966 season.
