ABC has formally greenlighted to pilot the Matthew Perry comedy "Mr. Sunshine."

The single-camera project, from Sony TV and Jamie Tarses' Fanfare, stars Perry as the manager of an aging local sports stadium in San Diego who realizes on his 40th birthday that he cannot just get by on his charming, funny, noncommittal ways anymore.

Perry penned the script with Alex Barnow and Marc Firek. The two are executive producing with Tarses as well as Tommy Schlamme, who is on board to direct.

The project sparked a bidding frenzy when it hit the marketplace in October and landed at ABC with one of the richest commitments this development season.

ABC has been aggressive in greenlighting its pilot early this season.

On the comedy side, "Mr. Sunshine" joins the recently ordered "Women Are Crazy, Men Are Stupid" and "Awkward Situations for Men."
