I like her with james but when he left the producers had to find someone else-so I guess Carl was te next best thing. Also why did Willona call Michael "GRAMPS"

Of the three Evans children Micheal was by far the most mature. It was because he acted so much older than his age that Willona called him "gramps".:wave:

I didn't hate Carl, but I just can't see Florida with anyone else, but James

:crazy: well, it's James. i've never understood why the producers (i think Norman Lear had handed the day-to-day production duties over to his staff like he always did once his shows became hits; the only one he stayed with from start to finish was All In The Family) felt that Florida HAD to be married after James' death. i don't remember Carl ever being much of a force with the family. maybe i didn't see much of those episodes to get Carl's importance OTHER than him being her second husband. that's why i vote for James...even though at times he could be a bit too serious when everyone else in the family were laughing at something or making jokes.

well reality is-if a woman is a widow in real life-she eventually remarries or may have another love interest so that's why carl was on the show.

The thing is, the producers realized that they made a mistake in letting John Amos go. They couldn't bring him back because they already killed him off. So the producers tried to find the next best thing to replace him and failed. IMO

I don't think they were trying to replace Amos-they were just trying to put a stronger male character on the show. J.J. was older-but still goofy.

James all the way. Moses Gunn was a great actor and I loved his portrayal of Joe Kagan on Little House and he was a good actor on Good Times but he was not needed.

James was the #1 good match for Florida. To me, Carl was just plain mean and was a bit of an A-hole at times. James was never like that with Florida. Sure, James was mad as hell, but you really felt what he was saying. Carl was just bleech compared to what had came before.

Easily, James. Moses Gunn was an excellent actor but the role of Carl was too sketchy (and the romance too contrived) to be believable. Maybe the question should be if there's anyone here who does prefer Carl to James.

I don't know if after they negotiated Esther Rolle's return if they simply couldn't get Mr. Gunn again or if they decided that they needed another James-like character. However;I don't think it was entirely coincidental that they gave Keith some of James's characteristics- albeit loving Florida as mother instead of a wife, Thelma as a wife instead of a daughter and JJ not quite 'freeze'-ing as readily with him as with his late dad when he'd show signs of getting ready to lose his temper!

James! He and Florida were so much in love, and it showed. It's a shame that part of the show was taken away. :(

James, he just seemed a better match for Florida.

What I would've done with Moses Gunn's character is instead make him Florida's brother. Remember Valerie/The Hogan Family? They wrote out the mother/wife and had the husband/father's sister move in. She became a surrogate mother to the three kids, and there was no need to worry about sexual tension or whatever. Carl could've moved in to help out, and the religious differences would be handled a lot differently. See where I'm going with this??

Obviously I preferred James. The whole Carl thing was too quick after James' passing and it should had been dealt with in real time. All in one season Florida suddenly loses her husband, coping with his death, meeting someone with religious beliefs opposite of her, start dating him and getting engaged to him in one season. That was a bit unrealistic. Esther Rolle stated herself that it is something that Florida would not do. The writers needed a male model in there because it was getting old of Florida constantly hollering at the kids. I noticed Florida was yelling a lot more at the kids that season compared to the James' seasons.

Her love scenes with Carl were very good and well done in spite of Esther not wanting Florida immediately getting romantically involved with someone. Florida came alive in those love scenes especially with James.

last night I seen the episode where James was killed, Esther was a good actress. DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! powerful episode.

James, of course.

James all the way. Their relationship always seemed very real and natural to me. It seemed they were truly in love and had been for years. The whole Carl thing came off as more of a rush-job to get a father figure for the show.
