I don't believe I have until this morning at about 1AM. It was quiet in my bedroom and I was getting back to sleep and I could hear what I believe were owls hooting......so I did some research and found this hooting info.
Owls often call out in the night over territorial disputes. Owls will also hoot at night if they are attacking another creature or defending themselves. However, given that owls are stealthy and capable predators, it is not often that you will hear them hooting while defending themselves or attacking another creature.
Here are some more factors, i.e. mating.

Hope James doesn't think this is a dumb post as he talked about dumb posts recently...I think this is new info in my life....

I think this is a nice thread. I love owls ! ;)
I heard one hoot as a child , we had some friends in rural Missouri . My family and I took a road trip to visit them , and that's when I heard an owl .Heard lots of frogs and crickets too! :)

Where we live, we're surrounded by tall trees and within walking distance of a decent area of woods. So we see and hear owls quite a bit. This summer I heard an owl almost every morning.

My hoot experience is a little unusual maybe since I live in the city on a pretty quiet street and in the early mornings also I hear hawks or geese making their loud noises. But the owl hoot made me more aware and will listen for the hoots more....

Once in a while I hear one early morning. It's sitting in my neighbor's palm tree. I love hearing it.

My neighbor guy was here yesterday and I t old him about my latest hoot experience and he said that in the back where the lives, he hears them as there are tall trees back there..and he said he was walking one day and one was swooping down toward him -- they are very protective of their babies...
Thhis is a sound you won't hear in a busy noisey city.
