Piper Laurie, the actress best known for her roles in Carrie, Twin Peaks, and The Hustler, has died. She was 91.
The three-time Oscar nominee's manager, Marion Rosenberg, confirmed the news to EW on Saturday, describing Laurie as "one of the most remarkable and versatile actresses of her day, a brilliant and creative mind, and a glorious human being."
Born Rosetta Jacobs, Laurie got her start in the 1950 film Louisa. Over the course of the next 70 years, the veteran star would appear in more than 100 film and television projects, including 1954's Dangerous Mission, 1961's The Hustler, 1977's Ruby, 1986's Children of a Lesser God, and 1993's Wrestling Ernest Hemingway.
She also had spotlight roles on several popular TV series throughout the years such as Frasier, Will & Grace, ER, Touched by an Angel, Matlock, The Twilight Zone, The Bunker, and The Thorn Birds.
However, Laurie is best known for her Oscar-nominated cutthroat portrayal of Margaret White, the overly controlling, religious fanatic mother of Carrie (Sissy Spacek) in the iconic 1976 horror film Carrie, based on the novel by Stephen King. She also won a Golden Globe for her performance as the quick-thinking Catharine Martell in the cult-classic television series Twin Peaks in 1991.
