View Full Version : What's more important to a song, the music or the lyrics?
Ideally, you'd say both working in synchronicity. But here I'm asking you to pick one.
I'd go with the music. Couple of reasons:
---- For example, a song like Good Morning Starshine, with such heartfelt lyrics as
Glibby gloop gloopy, nibby nabby noopy, la, la, la, lo, lo
Sabba sibby sabba, nooby abba nabba, le, le, lo, lo
Tooby ooby walla, nooby abba nabba
Early mornin' singin' song
Still went to #3 in the US.
---- All those wordless instrumentals that became hits. Not to mention classical music.
ThisLittlePiggy 09-14-2023, 04:46 PM I'll have to go with music. Lyrics are important, but I can get lyrics in poetry, by reading. When you hear a song, you want to love the actual music.
JO Sweet Heart 09-14-2023, 05:54 PM ^^^ That is true what you say there about the music, but with the lyrics being the actual message of the song, they too have to be good as well if they are going to be put with music at all.
God bless you always!!!

P.S. This makes me wonder how many instrumentals are out there. I would say there are not as many compared to music that includes a person's voice in any way, but that is just a complete and total guess on my part.

JO Sweet Heart 09-18-2023, 01:29 PM In my opinion, this right here is when it isn't just the music and the lyrics, but the complete and total package and when I say that I mean the singer as well. To me, no other singer can touch this beautiful precious masterpiece of a young man. :) :) :)

DJM77 09-18-2023, 08:23 PM Definitely music. I say this because if I don't like the beat in a song then it doesn't matter to me how good the lyrics are or how good the person's voice is for that matter. Plus I listen to a ton of instrumental songs, but I don't listen to any a capella songs.
Bonniegirl 09-18-2023, 10:45 PM Both!! Hard to choose and depending on the genre of the song . But all in all with much consideration I voted the music !;)
Janice Johnson 09-19-2023, 12:13 AM Sister Sister Show has an episode about a misogynistic Rapper named Cold Dog who raps disgusting lyrics about women. One of his lyrics suggests men should slap their Women if their Women don't want to have sex! The unedited version is,"Baby says no, slap that ho!" The clean version is,"Baby says no, slap that!" Tia and Tamera are huge Fans of Cold Dog. Ray is disgusted and disturbed that Tia and Tamera are listening to Cold Dog. He asks something like,"How can you enjoy listening to Cold Dog? His lyrics are disrespectful to Women!" Tamera and Tia are like,"We aren't listening to the lyrics, we're listening to the music!" Ray says,"The lyrics are the music!" Not really. Tia and Tamera are listening to the music, as in the beat, the tone, the melody , the instruments, the keys, and the flow, not the lyrics. There is a big difference. ;)

Yeah , totally ! Sometimes you don't even know the words to a song but the beat and music are so good that you really like it!;)
JamesG 09-19-2023, 02:15 AM Thread reminds me of Nirvana's 'In Bloom' lyrics:
He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means

What I think of is The Who from 'Join Together'
:music: It's the singer not the song
That makes the music move along :music:
biffbronson 09-19-2023, 08:16 PM Music. One reason is because for my favorite songs, I recognize them right away when they receive radio airplay for example, and in many cases there are no lyrics for a good while. I'm already enjoying before any words are spoken.

Penny Lane 10-03-2023, 01:32 PM For a good rock song I'll say the music. Example; My favorite rock song from the past was Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group. It had a great musical beat and to this day when I hear it I want to just get up and boogie! But I could never understand the lyrics until I read them online and thought Oh!
But a lot of rock songs are like that! But in a country song it's definitely the lyrics!:)
