I started rewatching SBTB: The New Class not too long ago, and I've completed the inaugural season, which consisted of thirteen half-hour episodes telecast on NBC's Saturday morning TNBC block in the autumn of '93. It took a lot of balls (God knows it did) to get acclimated not only to the new cast of characters, but also the direction The New Class had traveled following the conclusion of its predecessor earlier that spring. All in all, season one of The New Class is a total bummer, not to mention an extremely mixed bag.
That being said, I was actually entertained by and impressed with a handful of those aforementioned thirteen episodes, my personal favorites being "A Kicking Weasel" (Weasel is promoted from hapless waterboy to placekicker on Bayside's struggling football team), "Weasel Love" (Weasel becomes an on-air sensation at Bayside's radio station), "George Washington Kissed Here" (the students participate in a school play focused on the American Revolution, nineties style), "Homecoming King" (Tommy D. competes with student body president Chad Westerfield to become Bayside's homecoming king), "Good-bye, Megan" (Megan is conflicted between remaining at Bayside with her classmates or attending the prestigious Willowbrook Academy), "Swap Meet" (Scott attempts to sell a Defender Dog comic book with a rare misprint in order to purchase concert tickets for both himself and Rachel Myers), "Weasel Love" (Weasel's computer pen pal, Natalie, undergoes a makeover and transforms herself into a stunning beauty, much to Weasel's dismay and disappointment), "Tommy A" (the students help Tommy D. ace his midterm exams so his father will purchase a car for him), and "Running The Max" (the students are put in charge of the local hangout, The Max, for a class project).
In case you're wondering (and in case you're still reading), my least favorite episodes are "The Date Lottery" (the pilot episode in which viewers were introduced to Scott, Megan, Tommy D., Lindsay, Weasel, and Vicki), "The Slumber Party" (Scott masquerades in drag as his "cousin" in order to eavesdrop on Lindsay's slumber party), "Home Shopping" (the students create a memory-enhancing beverage with disastrous results), and "Belding's Baby" (Scott reluctantly babysits Mr. Belding's infant son in order to avoid detention).
What are your favorite and least favorite episodes of The New Class' rather lackluster premiere season? Feel free to read this thread and drop me a line...I'd love to hear your proverbial two cents.
Enjoy your Hump Day, everyone!
