1. Charles Wetbeck of the Miami News felt the show would create a storm

2. The show aired in Between Hee Haw and a CBS news special

3. The CBS affiliate in Kansas City received 33 phone calls, 25 callers were against the show and 8 was in favor

4. TV critic from Variety, Bill Greeley described the show......"This is the best TV comedy since the Original Honeymooners. Its the best casting since Sgt. Bilko squad. It should be the biggest hit since Laugh-In or the Nielsen sample is in need of severe revision"

5.The show ranked 43rd after the first episode

The show was so cutting edge. I was just watching The Bunkers Meet The Swingers the other night. I think it was season 2 and they really pushed the envelope with bringing swingers into the forefront on TV in 1972. IMHO its one of the best episodes ever. Edith being so naive in answering an ad in a magazine about a couple looking for fun times in the swap section. When Mrs Jefferson finally explains it to Edith she melts down. Sadly the edited out one of the best lines. When Rue tells Edith "Swinging saved us" Edith responds with something like "I think I would rather die."

That was a funny episode because of how clueless Edith was
