>>>Polite society considers swearing to be a vulgar sign of low intelligence and education, for why would one rely on rude language when blessed with a rich vocabulary?

That perception, as it turns out, is full of, uh … baloney. In fact, swearing may be a sign of verbal superiority, studies have shown, and may provide other possible rewards as well.<<<

Swearing is rude, vulgar, unnecessary and certainly not courteous.

I find there is something about taking the most vulgar swear words, combining them together and letting them fly makes you feel sooooo good when things aren't working out.... I've found replacing ANY word with the "f" bomb makes you feel good too. Like instead of saying "f"ing SOB, try saying, "f"fing" son of a "f"! Or sometimes just replace every word in the sentence with the F word, when you're really furious, it does bring some relief

I use off color words, especially if I am angry or irritated about something.

I recently watched the whole series of “Ozark”. I really enjoyed it. However one annoying thing about the series was the constant use, and I mean constant, of the so called “f word”. It was so grossly overused. For example (making this up but this was the dialogue)…

“I have to get up in the fking morning to the fking store then talk to that fking Marry about whatever the fk, then back to my fking car…”

It was ridiculous. This show had about twice as many “swear words” than “The Sopranos”. I was in Facebook and called it out on a thread about Ozark and supposedly (if it was truly him) got a “thumbs up” from Jason Bateman. Sort of my issue with HBO and other so called “premium” networks, just because you can say off color words doesn’t necessarily mean to use the every other word..

I saw this list somewhere.. "You Don't Have to Curse to be Insulting"

"He had delusions of adequacy."
- Walter Kerr

"He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire."
- Winston Churchill

"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure."
- Clarence Darrow

"He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary."
- William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway)

"Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. I'll waste no time reading it."
- Moses Hadas

"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it."
- Mark Twain

"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends."
- Oscar Wilde

"I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here."
- Stephen Bishop

"He loves nature in spite of what it did to him."
- Forrest Tucker

"Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go."
- Oscar Wilde

"He has Van Gogh's ear for music."
- Billy Wilder

"I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. But I'm afraid this wasn't it."
- Groucho Marx

I haven't seen Ozark, but I thought the same thing about Bloodline. It was almost like the writers took a page and wrote fk on it a hundred times and then just filled in some random words around it.

90% of my cursing is during Jets, Yankees, or Islanders games. If one of them is losing, get out the bars of soap.

According to you from your statement in the quote ....
I guess a certain person who was considered very rude with insulting "tweets" would then have been viewed to have "verbal superiority?":lol::lol::wave::wave:

We have a neighbor that moved next to us recently and almost every other word is "F ing" this and "F ing" that "or the little "F er" better not be "F ing with me."
I swear this woman never learned past the letter of "F" in the alphabet.

A couple of weeks ago she started on another very loud "F ing" rant. So, I yelled to her, from inside my house, to "SHUT UP," she responded to me to "F me", so I told her - she couldn't pay me enough!!
For some reason she then shut up

I guess you and I Fleet feel the same. I certainly don't want to lower my standards. As for neighbors who swear I wouldn't want to be friends with them. The whole world is going down hill. Tattoos, stud nose rings, ripped jeans, and these things I dislike.

Yes, society is certainly less classy now compared to 60+ years ago.

60+ years ago was the 1960's, the Hippie Era, which was gross itself. People randomly having sex with complete Strangers out in the open... Yuck! puke:

That was a tiny fraction of the population, like maybe 1%.

On previous forums I was a member of, around 20 years ago, we used to get around the “no swearing” rules by using their literal meanings or substituting a letter.

Such as saying a “son of a female dog” or “a piece of excrement” or telling someone to “pluck off”. We debated the fact that telling someone to “pluck off” wasn’t an insult unless they can prove that it was. It drove those Mods. nuts.

This is interesting and laughable with Johnny Carson and Madalyn Murray O"Hair.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aWFU2f4Hsg

Many yrs ago I had heard some rumbles about this but ignored it back then. With my thinking today, I would not dismiss the below info.

In his newly-released book, The Most Hated Woman in America: Madalyn Murray-O'Hair," investigative reporter Jon Rappoport claims that Mrs. O'Hair, the most famous atheist in the world, was murdered along with her two children, Jon and Robin.

60+ years ago would be 1963 and earlier. Hippies were not really around until the mid- and especially late-'60s.
