View Full Version : These are all the TV shows that CBS renewed after 1982-83 season that ranked lower
TVFactFan 08-20-2023, 03:03 PM lower than Gloria finishing 18th out of 99 TV show
Trapper John MD-#20th
Good Night, Beantown-#21
Dukes of Hazzard-#33
Alice-#41
Private Benjamin-#45
So Im guessing since Gloria was connected to Archie Bunkers Place they just decided to get rid of the whole Bunkers Sitcom Universe lol The article below stated CBS executives felt it didnt meet the expectations they had for the show

CJMD03 08-20-2023, 06:15 PM It is said that Struthers was getting difficult to deal with. What she and O’Conner didn’t understand is that the AITF glory days were done. No one cared anymore.
Duster76 08-26-2023, 11:46 PM This has come up before and the article itself alludes to the problem, "the show's ratings hadn't met the network's high expectations for its prime slot on the Sunday night schedule". The key part of the statement, "high expectations for its prime slot on the Sunday night" refers to the fact that the number one show on television, 60 Minutes, was the lead-in to ABP/Gloria, again it's a case of the devil being in the detail. Both shows had failed to retain enough of the lead-in audience, and those that stayed may have been from the less attractive demographic groups to advertisers.

That was double talk because Alice was put in that same spot the next season and ranked lower than Gloria and was renewed:lol:

Hold on a second, you're telling half a story. Alice did not perform well enough to retain that timeslot and was moved at midseason. The show was moved to 9:30 Sunday where it performed well enough to be renewed. At midseason the Alan Alda produced series The Four Seasons was scheduled into the 8pm slot behind 60 Minutes, it ranked 24 for the year and was cancelled! The following season Murder She Wrote was scheduled after 60 Minutes and became a top 10 smash in its first season.

But 24 is still lower than 18 right?

That's not the point, under normal circumstances a new show finishing in the top 25 would be a very good result. That was not the case here, in both situations the network felt the shows should have done better based on the lead-in, that's the point. The next season Murder She Wrote running after 60 Minutes was a top 10 hit, that's what CBS was looking for.

Well they could have moved Gloria like they did Alice. But they didnt which leads me to believe that they wanted to remove the whole All in the Family universe completely off the schedule.

While good for the season overall apparently ratings tanked in the final month.
