The Mission Impossible films have been leaving audiences on the edge of their seats for over 25 years. So, why did Dead Reckoning Part One underperform? (And how is it even possible that a film can make over half a billion dollars and still be considered a flop?!) While it’s complex, the ultimate answer just might boil down to something we've all been thinking for years. Here’s our take on why the film’s rocky production process complicated the intended rollout, how its missing elements falter in comparison to a stellar previous installment, and what its box-office failures say about the future of franchise films.

This is a video essay / retrospective on the Mission Impossible franchise, spanning from Mission Impossible (1996) all the way to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (2023). Generally speaking, this is a beloved franchise, though Mission Impossible 2 (2000) and Mission Impossible 3 (2006) seem to be held with less regard by the general audience. In this video, I make my case for why I believe Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is one of the worst movies in the franchise. I segment the films' faults into various categories and critically compare those areas with those of the best Mission Impossible movie, Ghost Protocol (2011).
