There’s hardly ever a segment/song/skit/plot line with them though. Instead, they are often just there in the background or with an occasional line. Otherwise, it’s mostly Elmo and Abbie these days, although Cookie and Gonger have a recurring segment.

I'm guessing it's because Bert and Ernie were based off of The Odd Couple, and kids aren't going to get the reference.

Who cares!
There's been many classic SS episodes that have been uploaded to Youtube and that should keep you and everyone busy from worrying about the present day show!

^^^ I second that 100%. What's been shared at You Tube can go on forever to where you don't even need whatever is done with the show these days.

God bless you always!!!

I always wondered whether they were also inspired by the two characters from It's a Wonderful Life. Everyone connected with the show says "coincidence," but I beg to differ.

It's unlikely to be a coincidence. He just happened to pick the names Bert and Ernie out of a hat? Sure.

Yeah, IKR. I really can't stand it when creatives aren't honest about where they get their influences from.

He didn't want to say where he got it from but we know. LOL
