View Full Version : Retro Commercials on TV Land

I enjoy the old commercials on TV Land, and the funny thing is--they're selling me on the products. For example, the Downey ad where the ironing board comes to life, and the voiceover states that Downey can make clothes almost wrinkle-free.
Another one is for Mrs. Butterworth's syrup--the one with the talking syrup bottle telling the lady how it's thicker...then an illustration shows how thick it pours over pancakes....and the other syrup is so much thinner.
So now I'm buying products based on commercials that are 30 years old.
Does anyone know the deal with these retro ads? Do the sponsors have to pay TV Land to air them?
Do all the products advertised still exist?
Who's got the scooparoo? :D

I loved the old ads because I grew up watching them. I do have a bottle of Mrs. Butterworths syrup in the fridge right now so they still sell it. ;)

That's a very good question, especially if the products still exist.

From the retro commercials that I saw, I know that Mrs. Butterworth, Downey and Swiss Miss still exist.

Here are the ones I'm sure they still sell:

Cracker Jack
Wendy's
Mrs. Butterworth
Lava Soap
Lays Potato Chips (another one starring Judd Hirsch, I remember them airing this one in summer 2000)
Rice Krispees
Swiss Miss

I'm sure there are others I can't think of.....isn't that "Ring around the collar!" one still selling?

I went to TV LAND's website, and you can watch the retromercials. They advertise a Ford Mustang from the 60s which makes me wonder how/if sponsors pay for these ads.

Apprently they will not run any old commercial of a company that went out of business.

I wish they would show two classic Tootsie Rolls commercials. The one with Mr. Owl finding out how many licks. The other with the kids singing "Whatever it is I think I see turns out to be a Tootsie Rolls to me."

I think they've shown that one before.

Don't forget about Chiffon Margarine, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!".

LOL, I did forget about that one. Is Chiffon margarine still on the market? If not, then I'm still wondering if sponsors pay to air these ads.
