How come she could still talk? Doesn't everybody with lung cancer lose their voice?

I don't think you lose your voice. Not to be funny but you end up losing your lung and eventually die. I haven't seen the entire run of the show since it last was on network tv so I can't remember the plots.

I believe she was also the voice of Betty Rubble.

I've had relatives die of this terrible disease. You don't lose your voice. You eventually lose the ability to breathe. your lungs just eventually stop functioning.

My dad died of lung cancer. He did not lose his voice but it got raspy from the chemo and radiation treatments he received.

What season was the show in when she passed? And didn't she carry on as long as she could?

The series was beginning Season 6 when she died. Bea's last work aired on Oct. 26, 1968 -- just her voice (episode 4 that season). Her last filmed work on the series aired on Oct. 19, 1968 (episode 3 that season).

Seven seasons total for the series, 1963-1970.

The final work was not at all substantial, for obvious reasons. In the one ep I recall, she's seen from behind waving to the parade, with a stand-in being used except when Bea's face is visible.

I recently came across the death certificate for Bea Benaderet and she did pass away on Oct 13, 1968 with left lung carcinoma listed as the immediate cause of death. I was surprised to see that Emphysema was listed as other significant conditions. I had never heard that before.

I got out my 6th season episodes of PJ and I can't recall for certain if she was in the first episode. However, I know she was in "The Swinging Sweethearts", and only had one very brief scene [that I saw] in "Only a Husband." Of course in "The Valley Has a Baby" there was only the voice over with a stand in for a couple of scenes, most memorably the scene at the foot of Betty Jo's hospital bed.

This thread from an earlier post on here had quite a bit of information.

The sixth-season premiere episode was "Birthplace of a Future President" and Bea appears throughout. While she has scenes throughout "Singing Sweethearts" her total screen time is definitely reduced compared to the previous episode. She appears in "Only a Husband" for a total of 25 seconds. But she looks and sounds well in all these very late performances.

I suspect she was not willing to appear on camera looking less than 100%.

I looked at my calendar and thought the same. 45 years ago. A few episodes I have seen recently has her son Jack Bannon acting with LInda. I am guessing he was late 20's/ I first heard of him on, was it LOU Grant??

I just read his bio on IMDB and he is married to Ellen Travolta.

Ellen Travolta. It must to interesting to be involved in show business. You meet so many people with the career or off a career of someone else who is in show business. On the other hand, you get tons of publicity and some isn't nice. Studying lines with someone , on camera and so on. Gives you confidence. You can't be shy.

Over the years, I've read interviews of actors, writers and producers who worked in radios in the 1940s and television in the 1950s and 1960s and all have said Bea Benaderet was one of the greatest characters actresses of all-time, and I agree. She was very versatile, and if you watch her work on "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show", "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Petticoat Junction" you see her playing very different characters in each series and it is almost hard to believe Blanche Morton, Pearl Bodine and Kate Bradley were all the same person! And don't forget her appearance on "I Love Lucy" in 1952 when at the age of 46, she played a very believable old spinster in her 70s.

There are many great actors who have appeared on stage, screen and television over the years and Bea Benaderet was definitely one of the few real greats.

Was it explained onscreen why she wasn't there? I've always wondered about this.

The only explaination they gave was, "After Kathy Jo was born she had to go help a sick relative". That's it. Death wasn't dealt with like it is now on TV shows.

It was sad when Kate was no longer on the show, even sadder to know that Bea was so ill and passed away!

From Wikepedia

Season 6 (1968–1969)[edit]

This season consists of 26 episodes.
Bea Benaderet returns for only three episodes (ep. #171–#173) before she becomes ill once more.

Only Kate's voice is heard in episode #174, when Betty Jo gives birth to Kathy Jo. Her voice is heard when Betty Jo and Steve read her letter and when she's heard on the other end of the phone at "Drucker's Store", talking to Wendell Gribbs. Benaderet's stand-in, Enda Laird, plays Kate "full back" for this brief sequence.

Needing a motherly figure for the three girls after Kate's passing, June Lockhart enters the show in the episode "The Lady Doctor" as Dr. Janet Craig, a doctor who moves into the hotel and is like a mother to the girls.

before June Lockhart joined the cast, didn't they have Rosemary DeCamp as Kates sister or cousin living at the hotel for a few episodes? I think I read that somewhere.

She also voiced Betty Rubble on The Flintstones.
she also played a telephone operator on THE JACK BENNY SHOW when it was on the radio, and she played the wife in a short-lived radio show called GRANNBYS GREEN ACRES, which became the TV show GREEN ACRES.

Yes. Rosemary De Camp was "Aunt Helen?"

I think she would have been a great permanent replacement for Bea B, but guess she was too busy as "Ann Marie's" mom on "That Girl."

I just saw that episode the other day. Yes Kate's is seen back to pushing the teeter tottor push cart down the train tracks with Wendell and again back to when Betty Jo is holding the baby in hospital. I did think it was nice the Douglas' came out to see how Betty Joe was. . So sad that Mother Kate didn't live to see her grandchild. I don't recall any one mentioning mom much again, so viewers must have assumed the character has passed away. I was wondering was Aunt Helen, Kate's sister?. They had the same hairstyle.
