It's only August, right in the middle of summer, but CHCH TV is already set to make some major changes to their daytime retro schedule beginning next week. These changes appear to be temporary since the new fall schedule won't be fully set until the middle of September. Before that happens, here is what you can expect to see in the meantime, with the first new entries starting one week from today, Wednesday August 9.

10:00 AM/10:30 AM/11:00 AM - I LOVE LUCY

If you loved watching Lucy twice in a row, how does three times sound? That's right. 3 episodes of "I Love Lucy" back-to-back-to-back. These will be from Season 5 when the Ricardos were in Europe. Since the series ran for 6 seasons, this weird new arrangement, which begins next Wednesday at 11:00 am replacing "The Beverly Hillbillies", should last about a month. After that, who knows what will happen? My best guess is that we will see "Matlock" return at its former 10 am slot followed by "The Lucy Show" at 11. I really hope I'm wrong about this but it seems very likely to happen. That's about all I can predict right now. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the first 11:00 am Lucy episode will be called "The Homecoming". It will be followed by an episode of "My Three Sons" which will also be called "The Homecoming" so your visual TV Guides are going to look very strange that day.

11:30 AM MY THREE SONS

This will be Season 8, where the Douglas family moves to California and Robbie marries Katie. The last time CHCH showed "My Three Sons", they got as far as this season and then went right back to the beginning of the series. I'm hoping that doesn't happen again this time around but I'm not terribly optimistic about that happening. I can see another series stepping in and taking its place after "I Love Lucy" ends.

12:00 and 12:30 pm PICTIONARY

This is not going away. Sorry folks!

1:00 and 1:30 GILLIGAN'S ISLAND

Continuing its new trend of back to back episodes of classic series, which stops here, CHCH will offer 2 Gilligans to go with 3 Lucys. That's fine with me. I adore this show!

The first double episodes will take place on Wed. August 16, replacing "The Andy Griffith Show". Again, this new setup is only temporary and should last until just after Labor Day.

2:00 HAWAII 5-0

3:00 THAT GIRL

3:30 THE FACTS OF LIFE - Returns Wed. August 9, replacing "Laverne and Shirley".

The first official new addition to the fall season, and one that wasn't listed in the fall media kit that was published last month, so consider this to be a pleasant surprise.

4:00 DYNASTY

5:00 CHEERS

5:30 MAD ABOUT YOU - NEW TO CHCH - Premieres Thursday August 10, replacing "Happy Days".

This series was expected to be part of the fall schedule, and it makes a nice addition to the lineup. This was one of my favorite shows of the 1990s and it will be good to see it again.

So that's what the new lineup will look like next week. What it will look like over a month later will be a lot different and difficult to guess at the moment, although I do have some idea. I will be back at that time with the full details.

My 2 cents on back to back episodes:

In the past, Bewitched and the Jeffersons had back to back episodes since they were long running series.

My Three Sons should have had back to back episodes.

Currently, these back to back episodes are laziness on the networks part. The more back to back they show, the less shows they show overall.

Only very long running series does it make sense to show back to back episodes.

Danny Thomas will be replacing My Three Sons.

It looks like MTS will end at the same point it did last year.

The back-to-back episodes seem like laziness on the station's part. You were right about that, but, like I mentioned, it's only temporary. It shouldn't last more than a month.

I was surprised about the fact that "My Three Sons" will end very soon at about the same point as it did the last time. Again, a bad case of laziness and negligence. I would have done something like this:

10:00 I LOVE LUCY
10:30 THE LUCY SHOW
11:00 DANNY THOMAS
11:30 MY THREE SONS

The last "My Three Sons" episode which will air Wed. morning is one of my favorites. It's "Ernie The Bluebeard" where Ernie faces the classic sitcom dilemma of having two dates for the same night. One of them is the future Marcia Brady, Maureen McCormick. This is followed by Pictionary and the first back-to-back Gilligan episodes at 1 and 1:30 pm.

The next day offers a strange bit of scheduling. As you mentioned, and thanks for mentioning it, "The Danny Thomas Show" takes over the 11:30 slot from "My Three Sons". It should start over from Season 4, but the first episode that will be shown is actually the 16th episode from that season. It's called "Danny's Date" and it's another good episode featuring a future sitcom star. Danny's date happens to be Barbara Billingsley from "Leave It To Beaver". I'll be looking forward to seeing that one on Thursday morning while wondering what other surprises may be in store for later this month. Thanks again!

UPDATE

The morning schedule will soon be set and finalized by the middle of the week. The changes will begin next Wednesday, 10 days from now, and this is how it will look:

First the good news: On Wed. Aug. 30, the 11:00 am slot which had previously been filled by "The Beverly Hillbillies" and is currently being used as a temporary slot for a 3rd "I Love Lucy" episode will be taken by "The Dick Van Dyke Show" followed by "The Danny Thomas Show" which returned last week. This makes for a good hour of classic comedy with two great shows that will look good when seen together. Before they come on, you might as well sleep in because this is where the bad news comes in.

"I Love Lucy" will remain at 10:00 and 10:30 am for two more days, Wed. August 30 and Thursday the 31st. As September begins on Friday, the move that I feared would happen and hoped to avoid will become official and inevitable when "Matlock" returns to its regular 10 am spot and it will be there for a long time. So that means the morning retro block will now look like this:

10:00 AM MATLOCK
11:00 THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW
11:30 THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW

The afternoon schedule is still a few weeks away from being official. Some of the shows are near the end of their runs and I will tell you in a couple of weeks what will replace them. Stay tuned for more updates coming soon.

I Love Lucy goes from 3 episodes now - to none?
I'm assuming at least 1 episode will be on in the afternoon.

I don't mind Matlock but CHCH is so obsessed with this show so I'm now resenting it.

Good to see Dick Van Dyke back since it had only 1 run.

Happy Days is such a staple at 5:30 that I can't get used to anything else in that time slot.

"I Love Lucy" will be gone because the last episode that will be shown is the last episode of the series "The Ricardos Dedicate A Statue".

I have resented "Matlock" since it first came on. I don't get its popularity either or why it's been on so often.

It also feels strange for me to not see "Happy Days" at 5:30. Its regular companion "Cheers" will soon be gone as well, leaving its coveted 5:00 pm slot in about a month from now. I hope something good will replace it.

Matlock is a mild bit of viewing, it must be soothing to people who watch CHCH, and it keeps coming back. I keep not watching it.

The Dick Van Dyke Show is great.

The Danny Thomas Show is grating.

Pictionary - pass.

I Dream of Jeannie is taking the place of Gilligan's Island at 1pm, beginning Tuesday September 5th. I bit too silly for me.

Gilligan's Island is silly, too, but more familiar. It will be almost half way through season 3 by September 5th and who knows what will air next. Maybe Silver Spoons or The Lucy Show?

Hawaii Five-0 - great show, very dated but still great.

That Girl - nah.

The Fact of Life - I really prefer the seasons after the older girls graduate, but I've been trying to watch since it started airing.

Dynasty - h*ll nah.

Cheers - it's on two other channels and almost done on CHCH. I've re-watched the entire series at least twice while CHCH has been airing episodes. My guess is Newsradio will air in it's place.

Mad About You - It's fine. I've been watching.

Overall not great but okay. The only show I really am looking forward to is Newsradio and I'm enjoying Hawaii Five-0 and Mad About You.

I miss Happy Days at 5:30 . Lol I think they should of went through the episodes again. :)

I can't stand Matlock, Dynasty, That Girl and I am not a fan of Mad About You. I am not a fan of the last few seasons of cheers. So I dont mind it leaving.

I don't mind Gilligan's Island . I am still hoping for Welcome Back Kotter, Alice, and WKRP one day. And wouldn't mind seeing Taxi, The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch again.

Great news everyone! The long wait is over. The CHCH daytime fall schedule is now finally official and available in the latest Fall Media Kit. Some of the additions are ones that I've already talked about. The rest I will go over briefly.

10:00 AM MATLOCK

Not a good way to start. You might as well sleep in.

11:00 THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW

11:30 THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW

Two great classic sitcoms from the award-winning Sheldon Leonard/Danny Thomas production company.

12:00 and 12:30 pm PICTIONARY

The obvious weak link in the schedule.

1:00 I DREAM OF JEANNIE

One of my favorite classic series.

1:30 HOGAN'S HEROES - Premieres October 2, replacing "Gilligan's Island".

A real surprise addition to the schedule. This is a great show to watch for people who don't mind the subject matter and can appreciate the humor behind it. Also worth watching to see Richard Dawson before he became a game show legend on "Match Game" and "Family Feud".

2:00 DYNASTY - New time slot. Replaces "Hawaii 5-0" on October 16.

Not a big favorite of this group and I don't like it either. But it still will be around a little longer, just not at its current time of 4:00 pm. That hour will be much improved, as you will see below.

3:00 SILVER SPOONS - Premieres October 12, replacing "That Girl"

This is a show that was featured in the last CHCH Media Kit as a new fall addition. In the first season, look for a young Jason Bateman as Ricky Schroder's best friend, stealing every scene that he's in, hinting at future greatness to come from series like "Arrested Development".

3:30 THE FACTS OF LIFE

4:00 FAMILY TIES

4:30 THREE'S COMPANY

Both series will premiere on October 16, replacing "Dynasty", which now moves to 2:00 pm.

Once it leaves, the afternoon block suddenly looks better with 2 perennial favorites that need no introduction but will look great when you watch them together along with the shows that follow them.

5:00 CHEERS

The last episode of "Cheers" will be tomorrow and then it will start all over again from Season 1 on Tuesday, so the series is essentially replacing itself. This is good news for its many fans, not so much for those like me who thought that it was about to get replaced by another series, likely "NewsRadio", which figures to be next in line to get its debut whenever another series needs to end, along with another possible surprise addition like "Hogan's Heroes". I love when they do stuff like this.

5:30 MAD ABOUT YOU

That's it. It's now official! Enjoy the new lineup and have a great fall!

I have been watching Silver Spoons lately. I had not watched this show in decades. Maybe since the 90's. And I never realized what a annoying child actor Rick Schroeder was. His character on the show is not likable at all. He is full of himself and is always insulting the other kids. I don't remember his character being that obnoxious. Lol Jason Bateman is on the show and is much better as his friend Derek who is a Eddie Haskell like character. Anyone else been watching?

CHCH has been such a letdown this fall. I was looking forward to Dynasty ending and being replaced by something better, but no such luck. I used to at least have a hope that a new show would take the place of a series that was ending, but not anymore. :(

Friday December 22 and Monday December 25 CHCH will air what looks to be mostly Christmas or New Year special episodes, a lot of Matlock, The Facts of Life, and a couple of series that aren't part of the regular schedule, a few That Girl Christmas episodes, a Love Boat episode. I suspect someone will create a thread with all the details, sooner rather than later.

I did that yesterday. Have a look:

Never in a million years would I have predicted Dynasty having another consecutive run.
If you pay attention to the opening credits, you will notice Dynasty had a lot of turnover.

I am shocked that CHCH even remembers the Love Boat for Christmas, since they abandoned the Love Boat last spring.

I'm just guessing, but I think "The Love Boat" might return after the New Year once the schedule begins to change again. It's the only series on the Christmas lineup that isn't on the current schedule or that has recently left, like "That Girl". I was hoping that, for this special occasion, they could have brought back a few shows like "Bewitched", "The Beverly Hillbillies" or "The Brady Bunch", each of which had great Christmas episodes.

I don't know how many seasons that they showed for "Dynasty" before it started all over again. You can look to see if it stops again after the same point (like they did with "My Three Sons" once they got halfway through). I would expect "The Love Boat" to arrive and replace it soon after that.

CHCH showed every season of Dynasty - they didn't skip seasons like they did for My Three Sons, and then when it ended they started from the beginning again.

It's horrible.
