Karl Urban is celebrating his 46th birthday today. The New Zealand-born Urban dropped out of Victoria University to begin his acting career at the start of the 1990s. He made a number of appearances in New Zealand film and television. Probably the most likely to be known to American viewers are his appearances as Julius Caesar on several episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess. Urban made his Hollywood debut in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship, and then became widely know when he played Eomer of Rohan in the final two installments of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Since then, Urban has worked in a variety of films, flirting with stardom but not quite making it. He has sometimes been cast as a villain, notably as Kiril in The Bourne Supremacy and Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok. One of Urban’s best known roles has been as Dr. Leonard McCoy in the rebooted Star Trek franchise; he has also appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick, RED, and Pete’s Dragon. He starred on the short-lived Fox series Almost Human, and is scheduled to star as Billy Butcher on the upcoming Amazon series The Boys. Urban has landed a few lead roles in film, such as the action horror film Doom, the historical action film Pathfinder, and, most notably, as the title character in Dredd.
