Despite their iconic status, shows like Friends and Sex and the City are rife with inappropriate and offensive arcs that make audiences cringe.

I don't remember the name of it, but it was one one those really cheesy Very Special Episodes. It starts out with Florence acting very strangely (saying that she spent the day seeing the sights of NYC on a lark), gives away one of her most prized possessions, IIRC. Mr. Bentley recognizes her behavior as signs of suicidal behavior and tells everyone. Then he, The Willises and Jefferson have some kind of intervention. Florence explains that she's been feeling depressed over her last breakup, sees no hope for her finding anyone and that's why she wants to kill herself.
The entire thing was so cringe because everyone talked like they were quoting a suicide prevention pamphlet, not like themselves or even normal people. On top of everything else, it was so out of character for Florence, especially what with her being a diehard Christian. Suicide is considered a sin and there's no way someone like her would've dared contemplate it. The writers should've just had it be her sister or family friend for their Very Special Episode, not Florence of all people.

Season 5 Episode 10
TED KNIGHT hated the script and initially did not want to participate in the episode. The writers did numerous rewrites. This episode was originally scheduled for the fourth season but was postponed due to the controversy. It was rarely reran in syndication.

I don't blame him. It was completely tasteless and didn't take the topic seriously, anyway. Male rape happens, of course, but generally in prison, and between males.
