View Full Version : I'm getting a dental implant
Bonniegirl 07-13-2023, 12:25 AM In a few days I am going to the dentist for a dental implant. I am kind of nervous . It's a back tooth that doesn't show even when I smile so I am really thinking of just skipping it .
I already had the extraction in April and a bone graft . Now the next step is putting in a screw than I still have to wait a while to actually get the tooth. That is what I was told, I think that is right ? But why is the procedure so spread out? I guess cause my gum needs to heal?
Anyway it is just one tooth , but for some reason I'm scared. Having a screw put in my gum ! Yikes! Has anyone here had this done. How long should I expect to be at the dentist? And is there any pain?:(
Also am I correct in the sequence of how the whole procedure will proceed? ;)
Hawkee 07-13-2023, 02:56 AM Hello Bonnie,
I really can relate to what you are going through because I have had dental surgeries done myself and one thing you must deal with is lots of pain and believe me it is no fun and second when I have gone to the dentist I usually get no pain and when I had my dental surgery done I was finished really fast. You might have to eat soft food for a while and when I was recovering I ate loads of my favorite ramen noodles and for breakfast you can eat a Chobani Yogurt and that was my all-time favorite breakfast to eat when recovering from my dental surgery. But always it may be painful and hard but remember the spirit of the hawk will remind you to be brave through this scary time
Let me know how your dental surgery goes Bonnie and i'll be thinking of you and so will all of your Sitcoms Online friends
Babalu 07-13-2023, 06:39 AM As long as you are going to a legit place and not some 'discount' lab that offers to do it for half what everyone else charges, I think you'll be fine. Individual implants are a great alternative to bridges where they sometimes have to damage or remove good teeth.

Here's a little info that may be helpful. Since you've had the first couple of steps already done, I don't think a very long time would be involved:
"... a single tooth implant surgery can typically take 1-2 hours from start to finish. This includes time for anesthesia as well as dressing the patient for a sterile surgical environment.
Just as with any surgery, there can be some discomfort. Local anesthesia and/or I.V. for oral sedation are used to eliminate any discomfort at the time of the procedure.
Most patients report that they were much more comfortable following the procedure than they had anticipated. Your doctor will prescribe medications to ease any discomfort that may occur."
Caroline13 07-13-2023, 01:36 PM Personally I've avoided those invasive constructed teeth and especially a back molar. I would not spend the money and not being a spring chicken, I live with no molar in a couple areas. The cost of good food is more important to me at this later date. And I gave plenty of bucks to dentists....and their kids.i
PhoenixAcres 07-13-2023, 10:17 PM Best of luck on the procedure(s) Bonnie  It's probably a routine thing for the dentists to do. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
MISST3 07-13-2023, 10:30 PM Bonnie, I've never had it and I don't know anything about it. But I'll be praying for a good outcome for you and a speedy recovery! :)
Bonniegirl 07-14-2023, 12:48 AM Thank you everyone . It's not till next week but for some reason yesterday I started getting a little nervous. All of your advice and kind words made me feel better.:)
It's funny, as a child and younger woman going to the dentist and doctors appointments didn't make me feel as anxious as they do now lately as I get older!

Exactly ! That is one of the issues ! Even with dental insurance a lot comes out of the pocket . And as I said it's a really back tooth, can't even see it when I smile. Is it really worth the trouble and the money? Honestly after they pulled it in April ( and I got over that) I never really even notice now that I'm short a tooth . But they did do a bone graft already , not that I have any idea what that even is? but I paid 500 dollars , yeah even with insurance !! But IDK if in the long run because of that will I have trouble if I don't get the implant?!
Very confusing !!
And my Hubby is on team " I think it's a ripoff and not necessary ,but do what you want and feel is best " !

Yeah, it's a pretty good respectable dental facility. Gets mostly good reviews ! ;)
Hawkee 07-14-2023, 03:58 AM Another thing you should stock up on when you are getting your dental surgery is protein shakes like Ensure and that's what my dentist recommended me to drink when I was recovering from my dental surgery and they taste pretty good. And also try lots of Campbell's Soup and buy some Yakisoba Noodles and those are soft and excellent to eat as well. Hope your dental surgery goes swift and always remember "Arctic Strong"
I'll be thinking of you Bonnie

Well, to me it's not at all confusing, why give the dentist more money unless you are flush with it and then do it.
What kind of trouble do you think you could have?
Oh those docs and dentists will find all they can do to make as much $$$$ as they can.
Dental implants are a huge newer industry --- I don't know a soul who has even one.
Hawkee 07-24-2023, 04:09 AM Hi Bonniegirl,

Interesting, just wondering what is the going cost of something like the one you are planning. If you don't care to reply, it's ok.

2,500 and that is just for one tooth! I already paid 500 dollars for a bone graft! So IDK if it now is just 2000? And the 500 was part of that?
That's the whole thing for a back tooth that doesn't even show! I can pay it on a credit card but still, that's a lot of money to me! Hubby says it's an unnecessary ripoff! But the dentists try to scare you( or maybe it's true)? That a missing tooth , even a back tooth could cause a domino affect of making teeth around it becoming unlined and it could affect my chewing and cr*p like that !
So IDK? If it was a tooth that showed or if I was in pain! But 2500 for a false tooth that you can't even see even when I smile ?

Your hubby is wise. You can think of so many reasons you can talk yourself into it. Just like I went thru a broken molar issue many yrs ago and came up with many reaons not to do the trauma and spend big money....never regretted my decision. And we can change chewing/eating habits a tad if need be.
biffbronson 07-25-2023, 04:46 AM There's a dentist who has an office at the end of my block. I remember some years back she told me a root canal cost $1250 per tooth followed by a crown at $1250 for a total of $2500. So when they're trying to save the existing tooth, it's also an expensive proposition.

Some yrs back costs of "standard" dental procedures, wonder what those bargains are in today's continuing rising costs of Everything?
Glad My root canals and crowns are behind me....yikes...
Too bad I didn't have the good sense/smarts to stay off sugars/carbs during most of my life, I too let the damagers do their thing.

I know !! It's confusing ! What is necessary and what is not? I mean we all want nice teeth , but how much can we really afford? These days I think the dentists know we all have credit cards and might be taking advantage ? As in the old days if we didn't have the cash money and they knew it and not everyone had credit cards , well , IDK? Makes you wonder ?

Sounds like a little "light" is seeping into your thinking Bonnie. If that molar is so far in the back, who uses it? What is it used for, chew up rocks???
PaperClips 07-26-2023, 03:50 PM You're already $500.00 in - I'd just get it done.

Yep, only need to add another $2K or so.

Yeah, but you have a molar and you don't lose $500.00.
If you start losing your teeth the other option is Dentures which is a whole different world of financial and physical pain.

How ‘bout this one?

Hawkee 08-02-2023, 02:46 AM When I had to have my dental surgery I had to go to two dentists and the first dentist was too expensive and so I tried the other dentist and the other dentist was also too expensive and so I tried my current dentist and we got a great deal but my crown fell out of my mouth and my mom had to take me in and get a new one and now that crown fell out and we might have to find a new dentist for me because my current dentist mysteriously disappeared and hasn't returned. But I cannot figure out why dentists have become so expensive and are ripoffs? Because when it comes to teeth you need a marvelous smile and a caring dentist. And good dentists are now becoming hard to find these days. I am wishing you the best of luck Bonnie and I hope you'll feel better afterwards after your dental surgery. I'm still thinking of you

Somewhat "dramatic" thinking, Bonnie is talking about one molar way in the back and she started the implant issue but now re-thinking. She's not in the process of losing her teeth.
And dentures have been supports for millions before all the modern high priced stuff. My mom and her sisters and another dear person I know have gone this route....

On expensive dentistry, ever think about all the high priced equipment they have in t heir offices? And dentists need to put their kids thru college too, and everyhing goes up and up and up with time.....
and thinking about the last 3 yrs with so many dentists being locked down, they weren't making money at that timeframe, it's make up time for them and so so many.,,,
