John Mulaney is one of the best American stand-up comedians working and his rise to fame in the early 2010s inevitably resulted in the star getting a sitcom in 2014. However, the era of standup-led sitcoms was very much over by then and Mulaney, a throwback to the Seinfeld clones of the 90s, was not about to bring the format back. However, while Mulaney was a disaster for its star, the show’s Elaine equivalent was the funniest thing about the otherwise misjudged sitcom. The role of Jane gave Nasim Pedrad one of her strongest pre-New Girl parts, while Mulaney himself recovered with a string of acclaimed stand-up specials.
