She was shown in episode one to have "practically supported her boyfriend through med school." So in this regard, was it believable for Mary to have given up her college to work for this? Mary was supposed to have been more focused on getting married, before moving to Minneapolis. She became a career woman, in large part, because her engagement fell apart.

That's a good question. Did Lou Grant ask her during the interview on the first episode if she had graduated college? I have this show on DVD but haven't watched it in a while. I do remember he asked her how many words per minute she typed and what her religion was and she told him he wasn't allowed to ask that but she answered it anyway. A very funny scene!
