Okay, here are the trivia answers:
1) I saw this in the episode where Charles is selling the pizza for the Pembroke's grandmother. He walks into the Lamp Light and on the wall is a pennant that clearly says: Copeland Huskies.
2) This is a yes and a no answer. I think it is fairly safe to say that in the TV series, Charles in NOT adopted. We have his very own mother to verify that fact in the years of the Powell shows. However, in the 1984 novel, it says that Charles IS adopted.
3) I'm not sure if they mention it in the TV series, but in the novel, it clearly says that Charles hails from the state of Pennsylvania.
For some reason, the novel presents contradictory evidence on a few things. The adoption thing is one example, but there are a few more. One major one is that the novel says the college is called Crawford College, not Copeland like in the series.
Also, does the series ever say exactly how Charles got his job there? The first show already shows him working with the kids for a short while. The novel actually starts right when Charles gets to college and he bumps into Buddy while registering for class. Charles needs to get a job because he doesn't want to ask his parents for anymore money. He sees a file card pinned up on the board in the student union for the job which the Pembrokes had placed there. He interviews and gets the job immediately.
