View Full Version : What Veteran Sitcoms Do You Think Will Get Cancelled This Year? The Gooch 08-29-2002, 03:18 PM I think "My Wife and Kids", "The Bernie Mac Show", "According to Jim", "The Drew Carey Show", and "Off Centre" will be among many others cancelled by May of 2003. Any others ? Bernie Mac is actually a high rated series, at least for FOX standards. dlemond 08-29-2002, 03:40 PM According to Jim Grounded for Life My Wife and Kids Andy Richter Baby Bob Sabrina, the Teenage Witch Just Shoot Me Drew Carey (going against King of Queens?) Yes Dear survives because of King of Queens and ELR. They should give that spot to Becker, a much better show, which I hope can survive its move to Sunday, though most people seem to think it doesn't have much of a chance. Thanks CBS. Sitcomwriter 08-29-2002, 04:14 PM Along with the already scheduled to leave "Buffy" and "Friends" are: Becker Girlriends Baby Bob One on One Sabrina The Drew Carey Show Dawson's Creek Angel Just Shoot Me 7th Heaven Providence (Is that still on?) Will and Grace Fanatic 08-29-2002, 05:18 PM Originally posted by The Gooch I think "My Wife and Kids", I doubt that. My wife and kids is a pretty good show and it is the highest rated sitcoms currently on ABC. But these are the shows I beleive will have this be their last season either by the networks cancellation of the show or the stars deciding to end them. Drew Carey(should have been canceled last season) Just Shoot Me(ratings were way down this season) Becker(don't think it will make it since it's not on Mondays anymore) yes, Dear(don't understand how it made it as long as it did) Sabrina(had a large ratings decrease last season, should go) Dawson's Creek(cause of the fact alot of the stars of the show want to now leave the show) Grounded for Life(bad ratings) Andy Richter(come on it placed 92 last season, sure to be cancelled) Ed(don't watch the show but it does have a very bad timeslot which could end up meaning cancellation) SBTB Geek 08-29-2002, 07:26 PM "Sabrina The Teenage Witch" "Just Shoot Me" BTW, I highly doubt that "My Wife & Kids" will get cancelled. It was one of the highest rated ABC programs last season! dlemond 08-29-2002, 07:54 PM [QUOTE]Originally posted by Will and Grace Fanatic [B] I doubt that. My wife and kids is a pretty good show and it is the highest rated sitcoms currently on ABC. I did not know that. I just knew that they were airing episodes back to back which sometimes is a bad sign. And plus I know no one who watches it. But that doesn't mean anything. dawsongirl 08-29-2002, 08:19 PM I agree with all that say Drew Carey. It should have gone with Dharma and Greg. Will and Grace Fanatic 08-29-2002, 09:43 PM Originally posted by dlemond I did not know that. I just knew that they were airing episodes back to back which sometimes is a bad sign. And plus I know no one who watches it. But that doesn't mean anything. I think ABC is doing that because they know they have a hit show on their hands and they want to promote it alot. So their answer is to show back to back episodes. Although that's really not a good thing to be doing. That's how Millionaire ended up with such bad ratings now. Will and Grace Fanatic 08-29-2002, 09:46 PM Originally posted by Silver Daze I wish Will & Grace would end its getting corny. Will and Grace won't end this season they were signed on for 3 more years. And they got 2 of their highest ratings last season. The Gooch 08-30-2002, 02:29 PM Though a critical hit, Bernie Mac isn't as highly rated as the hype would make people believe. Many of the last half dozen episodes from last season (non-repeats) finished well into the 90s and 100's. The reason it seems they're hyping it so much now is because it's put up or shut up time. If it doesn't deliver the ratings this year, it's gone. As for My Wife and Kids, ABC believes the show has creatively gone down the toilet. It put it on back to back last year to destroy it rather than help with the ratings. It may have finished in the thirties or forties in terms of TV shows, but the relationship the network has with Damon Wayans is extremely strained. If it falters, which it will this season due to scheduling, it's finished no matter how desperate ABC is for sitcoms. LucyCompanyPhan 09-03-2002, 09:36 PM sabrina-after losing its main characters i wouldnt expect it to last now, plus WB like is cancel crazy. grounded for life-is this show STILL on?i figure it be cancelled in a flash Drew Carrey-it could be canceled, but i think its gonna go until 2004 Just Shoot Me-i dunno, i dont see it happening, but it could *i really wish will & grace, everybody loves raymond & skrubs would be cancelled, but i know since Friends is going, they r gonna be NBCs leaders Notorious 09-03-2002, 09:40 PM 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch' BulletTrain 09-03-2002, 11:29 PM Originally posted by Silver Daze WOO HOO!!!! Everyone seems to be rooting for Drew Carrey & Sabrina to be canceled this year!! Maybe it might happen! :D These shows have been on for awhile and are going down in quality and ratings and will probally be canceled. tvje 09-07-2002, 11:10 AM I telll you what show should be canceled but I don't think it will. The Simpsons Fox and the creator is killing it. Though it still gets good ratings. It is not as good as it once was. The worst thing is my local fox station which has the syndicated rights to show only shows the classic early season very rarely. I remember Married with Children had the same deal in syndication until 1998 when my local station started to show all the seasons for that show. Maybe if the Simpsons get canceled, the samething might happen. The Simpsons need to get canceled and greddy Matt Graning must die. TJL 09-07-2002, 11:35 AM "Just Shoot Me" is probably done this year. They're moving it out of it's cushy 9:30 timeslot on Thursday night. I doubt it the show can make it on another night. Besides, they ran out of ideas years ago. Becker is probably gone too. Same as above... Will and Grace Fanatic mentioned "Ed." Although it is one of my favorite shows, and it is also in my opinion one of the best, I think NBC will lose patients with the show. It isn't exactly the highest rated progeam on the dial. It should be, though... dlemond 09-07-2002, 11:57 AM "Ed" is a great show, and I think it will do better this year. At times it seems to be unfocused as to the approach of where they are going, but I think they will get on track this year. At times it seems to be unfocused as to the approach of where they are going, but I think they will get on track this year. I hope so. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. All the shows I like have a tendency to get canned. I think the networks are out to get me. That's not paranoid, is it? ;) AlexPKeatonFanboy 09-07-2002, 12:12 PM I really hope Just Shoot me stays. its currently one of my favorate shows on along with Gilmore Girls, im just mad it is on Tuesdays at 8:30, interfering with Gilmore Girls, Buffy(which i tape of course) and 8 Simple Rules. The Drew Carey show was once great but has gone downhill a bit, its still watchable but it seems ABC is killing it TVJunkie101 09-07-2002, 06:01 PM Actually, as far as I know, ABC is happy with My Wife & Kids, if they weren't, no matter how desperate they are, would not have brought it back otherwise. Shows I Think Will Leave (and the reason I think they will): "Drew Carey Show" (It's just gone on for so long, and they are revamping the show a bit this year, so that could work against it, and not for it) "Becker" (I hope it sticks around, but losing Terry Ferrel (how do you spell her last name?) could work against it, and especially the new day, timeslot and lead-in) "Baby Bob" (I tried to watch this show, but it is AWFUL, it'll be gone) "Sabrina The Teenage Witch" (Will definately lose steam this year, and it has in the past; I always say, don't fix something that is not broken) "7th Heaven" is around for at least an 8th season. It's the WB's highest rated show (followed by "Smallville") if any WB show goes, it will be "Dawson's Creek" because it's pretty much said that it will be gone. I mean no repeats this summer should say something, and WB wasn't happy at all with the show last year. And the cast is ready to move on after this year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are NOT my thoughts below, they are Matt Roush's statements from the "Returning Favorites" issue of TV Guide. This is what Matt Roush thinks of the shows returning this fall, and whether he thinks they'll survive AFTER this season. "Futurma" ("After years of being treated like an afterthought among Fox's cartoon lineup, the future hardly looks bright") "Charmed" ("This cult series is being asked to do the near-impossible: jump-start what is almost literally WB's night of the living dead") "Becker" ("CBS is taking a risk programming comedies on Sunday, and without the cushy Raymond lead-in, Becker's going to have plenty to gripe about this fall") "Angel" ("This darkly dynamic series deserves better than being put into this potentially fatal time period. There are only so many times even a vampire like Angel can return from the dead") "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" ("It's all about the name, and Law & Order is powerful enough to keep this weak Columbo clone afloat - but the return of The Sopranos could steal away even the most loyal viewers") "Drew Carey Show" ("When's the estate sale? This show's ship sailed long ago.") "The Parkers" ("Is Nikki and the Professor's night together a classic "Jump The Shark" moment? With UPN tending to introduce a new show into the Monday line-up each fall, this could be the beginning of the end") "Crossing Jordan" ("The CSI: Miami factor could send Jordan to the deep freeze") "Buffy" ("Unless Gellar quits after her contract expires this season, this cult fave will continue to float UPN on one of TV's busiest nights") "According To Jim" ("If ABC's fortunes improve, there will be little need to keep this mediocrity around") "Dawson's Creek" ("The stars must be as anxious as we are to move on") "Off Centre" ("Even a reputation as TV's nastiest comedy won't help this survive on it's new death slot") "Sabrina" ("Sorry Sabrina, even with MTV trappings you're no longer an American idol") "Providence" ("Our eyes are dry at the prospect of this sappy show's overdue farewell party") "Touched By An Angel" ("If CBS weren't already launching seven new series this fall, Angel probably would have been retired. This will need divine intervention to return to it's glory days") I'm tired of typing! Go buy the TV Guide before Monday, lol! AdiTheGame 09-07-2002, 09:22 PM I will comment all you guy's cancellation/iffy predictions... My Wife And Kids - No way! It's like Friends of ABC. Bernie Mac - No way! It's like Friends of FOX. According to Jim - No. It gets very good ratings, and with John Ritter's new comedy in front of it, it will get better ratings IMO. Though it was a bad move to move it. Drew Carey - No, it still is a hit even though the ratings went down. If it does get cancelled, except 'The Drew Show' to appear. Off Centre - Yes, no one seems to watch it, but WB loves it. Wasn't it syndicated for a few days on TBS? George Lopez - No, it did just as good as ATJ and that isn't going anywhere. Just Shoot Me - Nah, the ratings did go down, but they were still respectable. And now it is mashed in between In-Laws (with lots of hype) and Frasier. Expect an eight season. Becker - Probably. This is my second favorite show on the air currently (1. Friends, 2. Becker, 3. Frasier) ... it would still have a chance if it were on Monday, even without Terry Farrel. Bad job by CBS, STILL STANDING will not last IMO, it is too Daddio-ish. I expect low ratings from both Becker and STILL STANDING, hopefull SS will be quickly X'ed and Becker will be put back into the spot it deserves. The only good thing about its move is that I would have something to watch on Sundays except for The Simpsons, but I much more would like it on Mondays. Baby Bob - Yes. Expect it to be brought back during midseason for salvation for Still Standing, it gets fairly good ratings, but it can't live on Midseason success. Yes, Dear - Nope. It will last many more years and it is a great show. Grounded For Life - Maybe. Expect it for a fourth season, then be X'ed. If it get lower ratings than last year, they will probably X it, but it won't be X'ed if the ratings stay the same. Andy Richter - No. I think one FOX show will get quickly X'ed bring Richter back. It is a very good show for FOX and had very good ratings. Sabrina - No way. Other than Reba and 7th Heaven, it is the best shows WB has. It is a symbol of WB. It won't leave, MJH has a huge fan base even if it does have bad ratings. It is like the Friends of WB on the Thursday of WB (Friday), it leads off a TGIF-esc night of programming WB should cherish. Girlfriends - Nah. It is a fairly good show for UPN. One on One - See above. Dawson's Creek - Yes, unless WB pulls all stops to make it return. It is like Felicity, fairly popular, then bumped. Angel - No, even if it does, expect UPN to grab it. 7th Heaven - No. Highest rated drama for WB. But it could suffer a downfall, Barry Watson and Jessica Biel have a fanbase and they left the show. Providence- No. Ed - No way, NBC is very proud of Ed and its Wednesday line-up. And it seems to have a sort of a Ross and Rachel thing going there. Will & Grace - Don't make me laugh! Buffy - Nope, SMG has enough of a fanbase to save the show. Although she may leave it. I heard they might have new characters if SMG doesn't come, expect that to last one season. The Simpsons - See Will & Grace. Futerama - No, it is a fairly funny show. Although FOX did abruptively cancel Family Guy, you never know with FOX. (Who could trust a network that had a show about ticks and talking bunnys in the same year?) Charmed - No. Law & Order: Criminal Intent - No, unless the ratings drop badly. The L&O name means high ratings. The Parkers - No. Crossing Jordan - Best new drama, don't think so. Touched By An Angel - No, even if they do, expect PAX to pick up the new episodes. Malcolm - Nope. The Practice - Nope, unless ABC gets monster ratings again. Boston Public - Nope. Whose Line Is It Anyway? Nope. Third Watch - Maybe. Enterprise - No, those Star Trek geeks will make it rise if it does get cancelled. Amazing Race 3 - No. The Bachelor - Yes. Not because of bad ratings, but do you remember 'Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?' Notorious 09-07-2002, 09:26 PM double frickin' posted Notorious 09-07-2002, 09:27 PM Originally posted by AdiTheGame Futurama - No, it is a fairly funny show. AdiTheGame 09-07-2002, 10:03 PM "You should be excusing yourself, for telling all these people that there opinions aren't right, when all they are, are opinions. " I read everyone else's opinion and gave my own opinion, is that so bad? People could still have fanbases and their shows have lowratings, Watching Ellie had low ratings and even critics say its because of her fan base. Notorious 09-07-2002, 10:17 PM Originally posted by Silver Daze DAMN FOX!!!!!!! Why they have to go and cancel a good show I just got into. This is why I hate FOX. Any idea what they will replace the show with? Well, the show is one of FOX's lowest rated shows, despite how good it is. After they're done airing the remaining episodes, I think they'll probably air season 2 of 'Andy Richter'. TJL 09-08-2002, 03:43 AM Originally posted by AdiTheGame (Who could trust a network that had a show about ticks and talking bunnys in the same year?) "The Tick" and "Greg The Bunny" were some of FOX's better efforts in recent years. If both of these shows were on a few years ago, when FOX was doing more edgier stuff, they still might be around today. I thought both of these shows were very funny and above all original, and they shouldn't have been cancelled so quickly. AdiTheGame 09-08-2002, 01:03 PM "I thought both of these shows were very funny and above all original, and they shouldn't have been cancelled so quickly." I agree they were VERY original. I enjoyed The Tick a little, Greg the Bunny was just horrible. But it probably could have lasted longer a few years ago, I mean, Unhappily Ever After did last 100 episodes. Superbatboy 09-08-2002, 02:29 PM I'd say both My Wife and Kids and Bernie Mac are doomed this season. They're going against each other in the Wednesday 8:00pm time slot. There are rumors that this is Everybody Loves Raymond's last season, which is good in a way because the show is every bit as funny as when it started. Go out on top I say. The Parkers- I have a feeling that the 4th season is doomed not only because of the new time slot, but because the "jump the shark" season finale. And how friggin long are they going to be in community college???? Off Centre- Doomed Just Shoot Me- Doomed, NBC is scheduling this show behind a BRAND NEW SHOW??? What???? Becker-Doomed. What is CBS thinking???? Not only did they move this show to a less profitable night, but they scheduled it behind Bram and Alice. Shouldn't it be the other way around??? It's almost like CBS is purposely trying to ruin it. Girlfriends-No way it'll be cancelled. This along with One on One are the best black shows on right now. Frasier- Okay, 10th season.....I don't see how this show will be able to maintain it's ratings. The ratings have been going down by season since the 1999-2000 season. Scrubs-May be doomed if it can't perform in the post-Friends time slot. Drew Carey- No matter what this will last until 2004 along with Who's line is it anyway. They have contracts...he he... Reba- I'm suprised no one mentioned this one. The show was HILARIOUS during the first season, so what does the WB do??? They fired the executive producer and hire someone else. This sounds like it could be the beginning of the end already. I could be wrong though. AdiTheGame 09-08-2002, 02:44 PM Frasier is still in the top 15 or 20 every week, it is the highest rated comedy not on Thursday on NBC. Plus, after Friends leave, they will need it to survive. I think NBC will try everything to win over the show that may very well save the network after Friends leaves, and the connection they have to the Cheers legacy. PPatters 09-08-2002, 03:16 PM  For those who think Enterprise's return is iffy, that's absolutely wrong. It's first season ratings were almost neck and neck last season with Smallville. Furthermore, it is the second-highest rated show for UPN, beating even Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and all of their comedies. Furthermore, the demographic ratings in the key 18 to 35 males, 18 to 49male, and even in younger (12 to 17 males) demographics are strong, ensuring it's return. If you honestly believe that this show's return is iffy, then any input you have in this thread is flawed. TJL 09-08-2002, 03:59 PM Originally posted by PPatters  For those who think Enterprise's return is iffy, that's absolutely wrong. I really hate to entertain the idea that Enterprise is in danger of cancellation. With all of the Star Trek spinoff series having long and successful seven season runs, it would be a shame if that streak was broken. Enterprise is a good show, worthy of carrying on the Star Trek name.. TVJunkie101 09-08-2002, 04:49 PM Enterprise sticking around being iffy was NOT my thoughts, that is what I took from Matt Roush's statements in the "Returning Favorites" issue of TVGuide. Read my post more carefully, and you'll see my predictions, then his. I simply posted his so we all can see who is right, us, or him, or none of us, LOL. PPatters 09-08-2002, 07:11 PM Originally posted by TVJunkie101 and thinks these shows may have a chance, but the future is still iffy: "King of Queens" "Malcolm In The Middle" "The Practice" "Boston Public" "Whose Line Is It Anyway" "Yes, Dear" "Third Watch" "Grounded For Life" "Just Shoot Me" "Ed" "George Lopez" "Enterprise" "Amazing Race 3" "Bachelor" I'm tired of typing! Go buy the TV Guide before Monday, lol! I am in no way trying to bash the poster, who was trying only to provide a more professional opinion all of this, but I thought I would comment on this guy's opinion. Most of these shows not only have a chance of returning, some of them are definitely returning. Amazing Race 4 already sent out contestant applications. Malcolm in the Middle, Enterprise, The Bachelor, and more than likely Boston Public will almost definitely see another season after this one, unless something REALLY REALLY changes dramatically in the ratings. I mean, what is this guy THINKING? TVJunkie101 09-08-2002, 07:17 PM He wasn't directly talking about returning THIS season, but whether they'll be back NEXT year. It's just his take on where he thinks a show stands (maybe a show moved timeslots, changed days, etc.). At least that's what I got from TV Guide! The section where I got Matt Roush's comments was under "Matt's forecast" underneath each show that is returning this year, it's just his take on that certain show for this year, like example, take "Survivor" "The fittest of all exotic reality-adventure shows will continue to survive and thrive." See, POSITIVE review, while the other reviews were iffy on his part. Maybe I could've been clearer on that, so, I'm sorry, LOL. I don't want to get this guy (Matt Roush) in trouble or anything for me misreading his comments. Should I just edit them out of my original post? Friends will be gone, because they decided to end the show after its ninth. Will & Grace will not leave, they are signed on for a seventh season and they are entering their fifth, they are one of NBC's highest rated programs. The Simpsons is cherished by FOX, it won't leave, unless they decide to end it. WWE Smackdown! won't end, wrestling will never end. Will and Grace Fanatic 09-09-2002, 01:12 AM Originally posted by James I think Friends, Will and Grace, Just Shoot Me, WWE Smackdown!, and The Simpsons will be gone. Obviously Friends is ending they already announced that. Will and Grace like someone has pointed out is signed on for 3 more season. They are also NBC's second highest rated sitcoms and the 3rd highest rated sitcom on television. And the only way the Simpsons will end is if the Fox network ends. Which will never happen. Are they trying to make the WHOLE family 7 again? Anyways, I think it's done a good job on TV, and I wish it good luck. Andy Richter Controls the Universe- It's been cancelled once, which is a bad sign! And, it wasn't all that great anyways. Baby Bob- I personaly love this show. It's just that everyone else seems to hate it. I think they will make the 2nd season of 13 episodes, and it will be gone. webuster 09-14-2002, 12:52 PM First I wanna ask: Has Family Guy actually been CANCELLED, I heard it was taking a break for a year. Sabrina will end- Too many characters left, it'll just be a bimbo type mary kate and ashley show. Becker- For some reason all the shows I like are cancelled, besides, I'm from the UK but heard it has a crappy slot, why does the rest of the world get affected by the us networks, they should have a public vote on timeslots. Frasier- probably won't but I hope it will, it has only one story to each episode, every other tv show has other characters doing different things, this is all based around frasier and niles. Drew Carey- on too long, someone else said expect to see 'The Drew Show' come along, I think this will happen, and just like Ellen and The Ellen Show it will sink That's all P.S. I know Diagnosis Murder has been cancelled, but in the last movie Without Warning, Steve Proposed at the end, does anyone know if they're planning a comback, or are they just gonna stay cancelled but release movies occasionally instead of having a series? Thanx:talk: AdiTheGame 09-14-2002, 01:34 PM Frasier will most likely end in 2004. The Drew Carey Show is guaranteed until 2004 also. Drew Carrey According to Jim Baby Bob :happyface :happyface :happyface AdiTheGame 09-14-2002, 08:16 PM I like According to Jim. It is very edgy. It is like Family Ties without rules. buddy love 09-15-2002, 11:20 AM I think Fraiser will still be around. NBC will be in real trouble when Friends leaves the air. Fraiser will be strong enough this season to warrent pick up--especially post Friends. However, I do think this should be the final season for "Just Shoot Me" this is clearly an aging show. It in someways reminds me of Wings, in that it is a show no one really talks about, but has been on for years and years...but I think its time has finally come. I think ABC will get very good news with "8 Simple Rules..." which will be a strong lead in for "According to Jim". The other verteran sitcom facing cancellation will be the Monday night trio of "Drew Carrey" and "Whose Line is it Anyway". I think King of Queens and Fear Factor will dominate that hour before the start of Monday Night Football. So my prediction is this--two veteran sitcoms: Don't Shoot Me, and "The Drew Carey Show" will be gone after this season. **the real story though is going to be how strong CBS is on Thursday nights with its new "Survivor/Thailand, CSI, and its new series "Without a Trace"--ER will still wins its timeslot, but ratings will be down. CSI will win the time period opposite "Will and Grace" and "Goodmorning Miami"--and "Friends" in its last season will do well (especially if it has strong writing like last season) but at the 8:30 hour people will tune into Survivor more so than keep watching "Scrubs" AdiTheGame 09-15-2002, 11:23 AM Frasier will definitely be around in the 2003-2004 season, the question is, can NBC offer enough money to Kelsey Grammer to sign on for more years. If Friends and Frasier all leave in a matter of a year, there is no show like Seinfeld that saved the network after The Cosby Show and Cheers left, NBC may fall in the ratings dramtically. The only hit comedy show they will have then is "Will & Grace", and ER may be ending in 2003-2004 season because Noah Wyle said he is leaving the show that year. NBC is in trouble. Sitcomwriter 09-15-2002, 11:42 AM Originally posted by Will and Grace Fanatic Obviously Friends is ending they already announced that. Will and Grace like someone has pointed out is signed on for 3 more season. They are also NBC's second highest rated sitcoms and the 3rd highest rated sitcom on television. And the only way the Simpsons will end is if the Fox network ends. Which will never happen. Or if Matt Groening says "Enough is Enough.I don't want to do it anymore". I mean that's what happened with "The X Files".... |
