I seem to recall a few episodes without Archie. Does anyone know the deal? Was Carrol O'Connor sick or did he have a work dispute or did I dream this? It was a while back.

You aren't dreaming it. The episodes you are referring to is called "Archie's Missing". I asked one of my friends about this episode and he said that Carroll wanted more money and they wouldn't give it to him. The writers were going to kill the Archie character off if Carroll didn't get back to work. I guess Carroll got more money, because the Archie character wasn't killed off.

Thanks Jenny. I remember watching one of those profiles on All in the Family, and they said that Carroll O'Connor could be difficult professionally. It wasn't stated in a bad way--only that he was a perfectionist, and he demanded creative control over the show. He had his share of run-ins with Norman Lear.
The show never could have survived without him even with the other very talented cast members.

I've heard about the run ins Carroll had with Norman. I agree with you. I don't think the show could've lasted without Archie.

When Archie return to the show, was that the episode when George, Louise, Edith's friend, Mike andGloria were all in the living room and everyone ran to hug him?

I can't remember. If you are thinking of the scene were George and Louise are dancing, Edith is hula hooping, Irene is standing on her head, and Mike and Gloria are kissing then I don't think that's the right episode. I may have my episodes mixed up, but I think it was just Mike, Edith, and Gloria in the room when Archie came home.

How did they explain Archie's absence?
Thanks. :)

What a coincidence--these shows have been airing on N@N the last 2 nights. The conclusion airs tonight. It's definitely not the same show without Archie.

Gotta agree with you there. It's kind of like the episodes of Sanford and Son without Fred. It loses something without the main player in the show.
