The 70's did have some unusual and unique clothing fashions. The same goes for home interior design as well. It was a colorful decade, can't really think of anything that I don't miss. I would like to go back but that is not possible, only the memories remain.

Yes I cherish my memories from the70's too! My kids were little and they wandered around the neighborhood safely. we had great tv shows and the best music. Well, colorwise, not so great. My new house had shag carpeting and avacado appliances and counter tops. We have renovated since then. :)

I wasn't too keen about the shag carpeting but I liked how things were colorful back then. 1970's TV had some great cop/detective shows, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, Kojak, etc. And the music was great, the 70's had lots of inspired songwriting with catchy melodies. I have a collection of hit songs from the 70's that I put together myself, there are over 480 songs in the collection. Most are familiar hits that made the Billboard top 40 but I also found a few good ones that charted on the hot 100 but not the top 40.

I have given a lot of thought and one really icky thing about the 1970s was the constant use of tupperware. It always had a funky odor from cups- I drank a lot of kool aid out of green- and orange-colored cups to yellow and tan plates. While I wasn't offered dirty cups and plates, there was always an unpleasant odor.

I'd go back in a minute. I miss so many people who were there and not here. :(

Ah, to be able to do it all over again....

Egad those flared pants, the gigantic shirt collars, mile wide neckties, and wide suit jacket lapels.

Long sideburns, long hair, sometimes permed. Ugh!

The guy doesn't look creepy to me, he looks like a normal, happy looking guy. He kind of reminds me of Geraldo. :)

Those pants were UGLY however and they charged nearly $15! :eek:

I wasn't alive in the 70s, I missed the 70s by one year ~technically I was conceived on Thanksgiving of 1979 lol ;) ~

But my apartment is decorated very 70s/80s style..... Very Mary Hartman-esc lol landline phones, phone directories, stovetop coffee percolator, 70s style coffee mugs, etc

I wasn't alive in the Forties, but the Forties are my favorite decade. I love everything about it that I see in the movies and television shows from that era. I love the hairstyles, and the clothes. I love how the men wear hats. I love the music. I think it is better that I didn't live then because I'd know all the things wrong with it but since I didn't, I just get all the good parts and enjoy those. I love to listen to old radio shows from that era also. There is nothing like it.

Mostly it's movies and television series set in the 1940s

I guess Jack Benny began on TV in 1949.

TV shows set in the 40s include Mob City and Bomb Girls.

I was born in 1985 so I asked my mother what she doesn’t miss from the 1970’s.

She said mainly the Vietnam War as she knew some people who were drafted, both in combat and non-combat positions.

She also said she doesn’t miss cannabis. She told me she tried to fit in w/ that crowd as her girlfriends were dating some guys who were into that. She said all they did was sit on carpet, play music and smoke all day.

I was born in 1970. The only thing I can think of is bell bottoms, whenever I would get a pair as a gift my mom would straighten the legs for me.

And fluffy pop groups like Bread.

What stands out to me is that….

1. Clothing was exceedingly ugly. This is across all spectrums, economic groups, races, everything. Just look at 1970’s TV shows. Now why this is, is beyond me except for the fact that perhaps the mood of the late 1960’s into tue 1970’s was to try to veer off in new directions in social and political changes and clothing get swept up in that mood, if that makes sense, to get away from the strident conformity of the 1950’s.

2. There were only three networks on in the 1970’s, especially before the end of the decade when people started to get cable. A lot of the time there was “nothing on” or really nothing on that met what the viewer wanted to see. Now at least there are many more choices of what people want to see and mostly everyone is happy.

3. The news came from the networks and didn’t give opinions. Just the news. Look at Walter Cronkite for example. But even he interjected his own opinions now and again, most famously saying after the Tet offensive in 1968 that the war was lost. But mostly the guy told you what happened that day and that was it. No 24 hour news cycle of nonsense.

How could I forget to mention Polyester?! The worst! The fabric couldn't breathe! Wearing it in warm weather was torture! Sweaty! Yuck!:eek:

Agreed !! I loved everything about the 70's , but a lot of the clothing styles left a lot to be desired ! Like the picture you posted in your original post !:lol: None of my boyfriend's, male friends or my Brother wore that. They were totally jeans type guys ! ;)

The early 70's clothes were good, the left over hippie look. But by the mid 70's , I wasn't a fan of the disco look type clothing for guys or girls at all!! :p

But everything else was great! The music, the TV shows , even most of the hairstyles . And the vibe just was more mellow, laid back, less stressful than these times !,:):cool:

You have a point in that there was a lot of great television in the 1970’s. I think even then, but there were drawbacks. There were three networks and one may not like any of those three shows. Second, you had to watch the show when the show came on. This problem lessened in the 1980’s when a lot of people had VCRs.

I like TV now because there are a lot of quality choices and one can basically watch a new episode at one’s convenience, and not when the show first comes on. I don’t have to rush home to watch a show or wait for it to come on.

What passes for cable now is awful. My parents have that. For me it is a total mess, literally about two hundred channels and basically one has to write down the channel they like and figure out what it on. There is no TV Guide except online. If you are older like my parents who don’t use online services, you never know what the hell is on. Mostly I don’t. When I was in their house, I ended up watching “Everybody Loves Raymond” at night because it was the best thing on, of two hundred channels. That’s saying something (although watching Patricia Heaton all hot and bothered is always an enjoyable thing).

Here is my mom's wedding picture from 1947. She never wore the suit again because shortly after her wedding the hemlines dropped and the suit was sadly out of style.
