ABC decided that Richie id not need and older brother becuase in a way fonzie was his older brother thats why they Took him off.

According to Garry Marshall, they realized that Henry Winkler's character was becoming so popular that they needed "The Fonz" in more scenes. To do that, they cut Chuck from the cast.

Then on the show they never mention Chuck again. He just kinda disappeared like KC Cunningham would later do on the show. In some ways it's really confusing. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/confused.gif

Maybe Gary felt that Chuck Cunningham would take away from Fonzie, or vice versa. Maybe also garry noticed Fonzie's star on the rise & had no need for 2 "adults" on the show.

Actually Wayne you're right. The producers thought that they should write Chuck off because Fonzie was more of less Richie's big brother role model. So they made "Guess Who's Coming to Christmas," Chuck's last episode.
