Which hit songs had a huge impact, positive or negative, on an artist's career? Maybe their approach to music changed after that or they tried to recreate the success of that hit and failed.

Sadly, My most favorite singer, James Otto that is, never did have another big enough hit as a singer after "Just Got Started Lovin' You" left its imprint on country music fifteen years ago.
