View Full Version : How many people knew there was a Carlton the Doorman Cartoon?!?

Carlton Your Doorman was an Emmy-award winning animated television special starring the (previously) unseen doorman Carlton from the sitcom Rhoda. As on Rhoda, Carlton's voice was provided by Lorenzo Music.
It was actually a pilot for a weekly series which never materialized. The show aired on CBS May 21, 1980 (right after the Chuck Jones special Bugs Bunny's Bustin' Out All Over).
It was revealed in this animated special that Carlton was a relatively young man, with shoulder-length blonde hair & mustache.
catlover79 09-01-2008, 12:20 AM I've heard that, but I never saw it. :( Of course, Lorenzo Music DID go on to achieve cartoon voiceover immortality later on in the decade:
Brian Damage 09-01-2008, 12:23 AM Yeah, he was also the voice of Bill Murray's character in the Ghostbusters cartoon.

You're right, I'd forgotten that!! How ironic that Bill Murray would voice Garfield in those (UNECESSARY) CGI flicks after Lorenzo Music passed on?

This is surprising-lol A cartoon based on a character that was never seen at all on a show that was cancelled 2 years before the premeire of the cartoon on CBS? HUH???-lol
Schmoopie 09-02-2008, 12:38 AM That's very cool! God, I haven't thought about Carlton the Doorman in YEARS! I didn't realize that he had done other voice overs AND the voice of Garfield! Thanks for the info!

Plus, Lorenzo Music and his wife co-wrote "Home to Emily", the theme song from the Bob Newhart Show. A man of many talents.
JMFabiano524 12-09-2008, 01:01 AM Yep...out of curiosity, I'd like to see it as a bonus if there ever is a Rhoda DVD (and really, they could come out with it NOW, as Season 4 of MTM was the end of Rhoda's stay there)
Also notable to me is that there's yet another rare MTM logo variation attached to this program. Which would be great to see in itself.
OOliver 02-04-2009, 05:19 PM I remember this show vaguely - I do remember watching it and knowing it was supposed to be a series after this special aired. WOW! Back in those days, we didn't have 1,000 channles of cable TV to choose from - just three networks, so I guess this was the "best bet" for the night and that's why I tuned in! I can't explain it any other way!

And now that the Rhoda DVDs are coming, let me repeat my want for the Carlton cartoon to be used as a bonus feature!
"Come on, say meow..." (Silence) "Damn cat..."

Hi,
I'm fairly new. Or rather a long time between posts, that is.
I hope that if they ever release the Season 5 DVDs they put "Carlton, Your Doorman" on it as an extra, but that's probably wishful thinking.
James28 12-28-2014, 05:39 PM I heard that the Carlton Your Doorman animated special was actually a pilot for a weekly series that never materialized. If Carlton Your Doorman was intended to be a weekly series, when would it have aired, Saturday Morning or Primetime?

No idea, but I can't picture anything from MTM airing on Saturday mornings. Wouldn't be their style. Then again, I never saw Carlton so I don't know if the pilot is or is not the usual sophisticated fare from MTM.
James28 12-29-2014, 05:58 PM If it had been ordered to series before, say, the 1980-81 season or the 1981-82 season, would Carlton Your Doorman have been a long-running hit, or would it have been a short-running (one-season) flop? Being an animated series, it would have had some sore of complications, like the long production time needed for one episode, etc..

I don't think it would have been a hit. I don't think it was right time then to have a cartoon on during primetime.

Primetime. The pilot used to be on YouTube and I recall there being a cuss word or two in there.

I guess this means an actual Carlton Your Doorman animated series would have either been a flop, or wouldn't have been picked up to series at all. The Big 3 networks would never have accepted animated series as long-term players. But the Fox Network, a fourth television network, did, with the immense success of The Simpsons and a few other long-running animated shows, such as King of the Hill and Family Guy.

Even though Carlton Your Doorman didn't become a series, Lorenzo Music not long after became the cartoon voice of Garfield for tv specials & Saturday morning series for years. His voice was a great match, I think, for Garfield as well as for Carlton.
OOliver 05-05-2015, 10:22 PM For some reason, I recall reading that "Carlton.." was supposed to air right after the sitcom "Checking In", which was the Marla Gibbs spin-off from 'The Jeffersons'. However, 'Carlton' never got a chance because "Checking In" was cancelled so quickly. Does anyone else remember this?
zevonsky72 07-27-2017, 09:39 PM Just received the Season Five set. It says:
Bonus Feature
"Carlton Your Doorman" (1980) - The Animated Pilot Episode For A Proposed Rhoda Spinoff Series.
Never thought I'd see this...
Yes! I just read that now on my DVD set. So excited to see this one!
I just watched the Carlton pilot. Hilarious! Worth the price of the DVD set alone! Keep in mind though this isn't a cartoon for kids. The writing is more mature than a Simpsons or South Park episode.
Svenfan1234 07-29-2017, 01:24 PM Yesss!!! :D I'll be preordering this set soon! Never thought we'd see THIS! :D
Chocolate Moose 07-30-2017, 01:23 PM No kidding? Who da thunk?

I watched it several years ago when it was on YouTube. I remember there being some minor cursing, but other than that I didn't remember it being vulgar at all. Not sure if vulgar is what you meant by "mature."

I meant mature being the plot of the show. It's not vulgar.

Howard 06-14-2023, 05:48 PM Do you remember Lorenzo Music's short-lived talk show with his wife?
