Camp Wilson (USMC) sure looked like a Hollywood movie studio to me.

I read somewhere that it was doctored up and that it was relatively close to Wally's filling station.

The Gomer Pyle USMC set was indeed located adjacent to Wally's Gas Station. In the episode GOOBER'S CONTEST the barracks can clearly be seen next to the gas station as Goober is talking to Floyd.

This reminds me of the photo of the Petticoat Junction set, showing that the Shady Rest Hotel was just a big wide-open top room for the cameras and mics. In a sense, knowing how these shows' sets actually were sort of "ruins" the experience for the viewer...! I guess we're still free to believe in Santa. :)

I was also a bit surprised that Wally's gas station is so close to Andy's house.

In the scene where Opie is racing with Helen's niece, they start running in Opie's yard and in seconds are running up to the gas station.
