I noticed recently that Lucy and Ricky had twin beds pushed together. I'm wondering if this was to satisfy the censors...about some twin bed rule that I've heard about. Are they ever shown in the beds? I'm not a regular viewer of the show.
I know in the early 60's, Rob and Laura Petrie had twin beds, yet in the late 60's, the Bradys were shown together in a double bed.

The beds pushed together are in the earlier episodes. And yes there are scenes where they are in bed. But, in later episodes they have twinbeds separated. I don't know why they allowed the beds together at first and then moved them apart.

Lucy and Ricky's twin beds were separated when Lucy got pregnant. I guess they didn't want any more children. Regarding the first TV couple to be seen in a double bed, it wasn't the Bradys, even though Sherwood Schwartz claims it was. I don't know for sure who that couple was, but I do know that Herman and Lilly Munster were seen in a double bed together. Sherwood Schwartz also claims Carol Brady was TV's first divorcee, but of course we know that would be Vivian Bagley on The Lucy Show. Besides, there's no evidence on The Brady Bunch that Carol was even divorced.

I always thought Carol and Mike were both widowed. If Carol was in fact divorced where was the girl's bio. dad? If anyone knows why Lucy and Ricky's beds were moved apart please let us know.:)

Like Jane said, the beds were moved apart after Lucy got pregnant. Apparently the censors wanted to make sure that little children wouldn't go and ask Mommy and Daddy how the baby got into Lucy, or for overly prudish people to be offended. Basically, they wanted you to think that Lucy Ricardo's baby was conceived by immaculate conception, which we all know wasn't the case with them. I never understood why nobody but Lucy and Desi and other families in the US thought that having a baby was a blessing, and not something to hide.

The question of which TV sitcom was the first to feature a husband and wife sleeping in the same bed (rather than twin beds) has been asked many times. For years Florence Henderson claimed that Mike (Robert Reed) & Carol (Florence Henderson) Brady were the first. Then she announced that she was incorrect; it was Herman & Lily Munster. I announced that the correct answer was on January 17, 1955 when Fred (William Frawley) & Ethel (Vivian Vance) Mertz demonstrated their unique way to cope with a sagging mattress in the "I Love Lucy" episode entitled "First Stop."

Many people reject this account as Fred was pretty much a prisoner of the bed and it was a one-time occurrence.

I was later corrected, Ozzie and Harriet had a queen-size bed.

But they are all wrong! "Mary Kay and Johnny" were the first in 1947, Mary Kay also was shown pregnant on this early sit-com. And since "Mary Kay and Johnny" was the first sit-com, I don't think I'll ever have to correct my answer again!

Anyway, I happened to be on that website immediately before coming here tonight, so I thought I'd pass along the info. :)

Lucy and Ricky did share a bed together in "First Stop". Remember when they were in bed and it started moving? A very funny scene. Anyway, in some of the earlier episodes, the stories did require the beds to be pushed together. For instance, the episode "Handcuffs" would have never worked if they had the beds pushed apart. In later episodes, the stories didn't require the beds to be together. But I never knew that the reason for the change was Lucy having a baby. That is very interesting.

Probably because the way babies are conceived was for some reason "bad" and "taboo" even though 1. Eventually, almost everyone does it, and 2. It's a natural thing people!

They didn't think so! :lol: Good point, Cathy. I think Lucy and Desi were definitely ahead of their time. They had no problem with going on with the show while she was pregnant. They wanted to. They just had to convince the censors. What I didn't understand was why it was such a problem. Everyone knew that they were married in real life as well as on tv. Unless the censors and all the worried people lived under rocks, they would've realized that most married people do get it on occasionally! :lol:

I think a lot of people in the 50s were living under rocks, in bubbles, out in space, underwater, or with their eyes closed, the fingers in their ears, and singing "La la la, I can't HEAR YOU!"


Here's something else I just thought. So what if Lucy and Desi weren't married? This was Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, not Lucille and Desi Arnaz. I Love Lucy was not a reality show (Thank God). We as viewers were supposed to be watching this as a piece of fiction, not a documentary. Ricky and Lucy got pregnant and the viewers can think whatever that want about how. People shouldn't watch this like it's The Osbournes.

The Osbourne's is a reality show? No one was expecting a documentary from ILL. Just a little more realitic. And a married couple sleeping in two separate beds is not the norm.

TV's not supposed to be that realistic. That would be boring. They just did what the sensors told them they could.

Today in my English class, we started talking about ILL and how they couldn't say the word 'pregnant' and my teacher said something how did they make Little Ricky if they had twin beds and this one girl said, "They used the couch!" and then one of the guys yelled out, "Kitchen table!" :lol: I just found this to be interesting and thought I'd share it.
