"Riverdale" Spin-off gets Pilot Order at The CW

The "Riverdale" spin-off, "Katy Keene", follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twenty-something dreams in New York City.

This musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.

Aguirre-Sacasa, who co-wrote "Katy Keene" with "Riverdale" co-executive producer Michael Grassi, said last summer that the new offshoot is “very different from Riverdale.”

The CW ordered the pilot for the musical dramedy Katy Keene last night. While Keene is a fashion-focused Archie Comics character, not much is known about how she will be involved in the spinoff series. Katy Keene, according to The CW's announcement, "follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twenty-something dreams in New York City. While it’s still early in the development of "Riverdale" spin-off pilot "Katy Keene" (it was just announced last week), The CW boss Mark Pedowitz revealed some details Thursday at TCA. Specifically, that there will not be a crossover episode to introduce the Archie universe character.

“Katy Keene takes places years after Riverdale high school. There are no plans to do anything (regarding a crossover). Any of the Riverdale characters who come to Katy Keene will be older,” he said. “Robert (Aguirre-Sacasa) is getting the pilot right.”

Ashleigh Murray To Star in The CW’s "Riverdale" Spin-off Pilot

Josie McCoy is moving to the big city. "Riverdale‘s" Ashleigh Murray is set as a lead in The CW’s spin-off pilot "Katy Keene" from "Riverdale" creator/executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.

The pilot pickup was announced just last week.




Spinning off from her time in the small town of Riverdale, a now 20-something Josie McCoy (Murray) sets off on a new adventure to make it in the big city. More determined than ever to break into the music scene as the next Diana Ross, Josie finds herself forging new friendships, falling into new relationships, and, one day, becoming the star she is destined to be.

If "Katy Keene" is picked up to series, Murray will be exiting "Riverdale".

Johnny Beauchamp (Penny Dreadful) and Julia Chan (Saving Hope) have landed lead roles opposite "Riverdale‘s" Ashleigh Murray in "Katy Keene", The CW’s "Riverdale" spin-off pilot from "Riverdale" creator/executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.


Beauchamp will play Jorge/Ginger Lopez. By day, Jorge works at his family’s bodega. By night, his drag alter ego Ginger bartends and performs at a local club. Jorge always has aspired to be a Broadway performer, but he’s now looking to take his drag career to the next level.



Chan will play Pepper Smith, a New York City “It Girl” who is at the epicenter of all things trendy. As the funny, magnetic life of the party, she dreams of opening her very own version of Andy Warhol’s Factory. But behind all the outrageous noise, no one quite knows where she gets all her money — or if she even has any.

Camille Hyde (American Vandal) and Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens) have joined the cast of "Katy Keene", The CW’s "Riverdale" spin-off pilot from "Riverdale" creator/executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.

Hyde will play Alexandra Cabot, a powerful, savvy and chic New York socialite who is an SVP at her father’s company. Both respected and feared, Alexandra is competitive with her brother, who has a very different vision for the record label.

Laviscount is set as her brother, Alexander, the CEO of his father’s company who dreams of rebooting its dormant record label division, which attracts him to Josie. He’s cut from a different cloth than his billionaire family, as he’d rather take the subway and listen to vinyl, and he secretly DJs at a dive club.

Bold, big-hearted and independent, Hale’s Katy Keene is a twentysomething New Yorker who aspires to be a fashion designer. When she’s not working as a personal shopper at a luxury department store, she’s navigating friendship and dating in the big city.

"Katy Keene" Pilot Adds Zane Holtz and Katherine LaNasa

The CW’s "Katy Keene" spin-off pilot has added Zane Holtz (Hunter Killer, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) and Katherine LaNasa (Imposters, Satisfaction).



Holtz will star as Ko Kelly, a boxer with two goals in life: To fight a welterweight championship in Madison Square Garden, and to marry his longtime girlfriend, Katy Keene.

Born and raised in Queens, KO is a humble, protective, salt-of-the-earth guy who makes ends meet as a personal trainer and a bouncer.



LaNasa is set to portray Gloria Grandbilt, a legendary personal shopper at the luxury department store Lacy’s, catering to the rich and famous.

Always impeccably dressed and the queen of her domain, she demands a level of excellence from her “girls,” young assistants that few can provide.

Whenever I read any of the Archie comics digests I always skipped the Katy Keene stories, my least favorite that popped up in those.
