Hey! I need everyone advice. Its really important to me and my friend Amanda. Ok, we want to go to NYC by OURSELVES (seriously, we're both 18- AND out of school). However, our parents refuse to let us go by ourselves, because its NYC and "its not a place for 2 young girls blah blah blah." We're trying to figure out ways to show them we are responsible (seriously, we're not gonna go out and do drugs and stupid stuff like that- we just want FREEDOM for a week). We thought of maybe dining them and explaining all the different possibilities, maybe taking some self-defense classes, calling them every couple hours, ANYTHING. We'd also like some of your ideas too, because frankly we're getting NOWHERE with our parents and it get REALLY REALLY REALLY frustrating. THANKS!:D

You could just up and leave...lol. That'll fix 'em. But...if you are depending on them, like I'm planning on doing, just be really responsible for a really really long time, and show them that you can do it. Make deals with them, too. Like, you'll take a self-defense class, or something. I dont know...

Yes, call me and I'll be your guide anytime. :D

Let me tell ya, I'm 14 and I've been wandering around the city by myself since I was 9-10 years old... ALL the time, sometimes till 9.00PM or so. No matter WHAT these people tell you, over the years, New York has reinvented itself to become one of the safest cities in The United States. In Manhattan, there are countless numbers of police officers around every other corner, and public telephone booths in every block (sometimes more than four in each) which are free to use if you need to call 911. And if your parents are worried about you getting lost or something, tell them NOT to. All you need is a unlimted MetroCard, which are $17 for one week and $4 a day... and a map, which are sold in every pharmacy. (Every two-five blocks depending on where you are, lol) And IMO, it's impossible to get lost in Manhattan, lol.. (BX, SI, BRKLYN, and Queens, are a different story, however, lol.) And because it is so diverse, there are countless people here to help you. As long as you stay on lighted surface, you're fiiiiiine. So just tell your parents you're old enough and that its completely safe, etc etc. Tell 'em you'll clean your room, LOL?

New York City is a great town.
Please, feel free to stop by and visit. We'll leave a light on for yaou...
However, parents will be parents, and they will always worry about you. Heck, I've lived here for years, and my Mother still worries about me living in the city!

Jo provied you with some very helpful info, and NYC has become a much safer place to visit in the past few years...

Why not invite your parents along? It's a great family place! Sure, I know you want your "freedom" for a week, but if they see that NYC is really a great place to visit, maybe in the future, they won't be worried about you coming here on your own.

You are both 18 and you are both legally adults so tell your parents to get stuffed! They have no right to tell you what you can and can't do.
Seriously, you should start standing up to them now before it's too late. I didn't stand up to my parents when I should have and now I'm in my 20's and they're still talking to me like a 12 year old.

hmm, well Ive never been to NY alone or w/ friends but when Im in philly by myself or w/ a few friends I make sure I have my cell phone and leave it on so my parents can call. I also check in w/ them at a certain time just to make sure everythings ok.
You are 18 and a legal adult, remind them of that in a nice way. The self defense class thing could work as a bargaining tool.

good luck!!!!

Ive been to NYC and so has my friend a lot. We go just about every year (or twice in a year) for the past 5 years. My Dad would NEVER go, not even as a family- hes been once and he hates cities and crowds. My Mother likes it, but its like we ALWAYS go with her ya know?? lol. We just want to have fun. And they said they trust US, its just not a "city for 2 young girls." LOl-trust us we're about to tell them to stuff it! lolol. But that wouldnt get us to far now would it? And we DO live with them. Obviously, if we were on our own it would be a COMPLETELY different story.
THANKS FOR EVERYONES ADVICE!! I cant wait to tell my friend today!:D :) :D

If you're 18, you're old enough to go to NYC by yourself. And as Jenny said, it's not dangerous!!! It's not like it used to be. I think all your ideas sound great so far--taking self defense classes, promising that you'll call home plenty of times every day, etc. What makes your parents think you won't be safe there?? You could also tell them it'll be a good experience for you...cuz...well, it will be! :D

P.S. I AM SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!! If you know me well, you know that I've been dying to visit New York City again since I visisted there last about three years ago. If you do get to go, I am happy for you and..um...can you take me with you?

Everybody's going to be running away to New York.
Your loved ones at home worried sick about you...
Sitcoms Online posts left unanswered for days...

Is that what you want?

Let me tell you folks, "Jo's The Bomb" didn't let you in on the really important secret stuff her in The Big Apple..
- Like all the hidden passages.
- And the tree that gives out money in Central Park.
- The building made of chocolate on 59th street...

You won't find those listed on any subway map!

;)

BTW, if you want a map with tourist attractions, FREE.. just grab a yellow/white page book from the steps of any APT and tear out a good number of pages. :D

True, true, we ARE 18 and legal, BUT keep in mind we live in THEIR house, thus living by THEIR rules. I just cant tell them to scuzz off and take off for a week (My God, Id come home to see a yard-sale of all my stuff! lol). Also, they dont want us to go (ESPECIALLY my dad) because we're "young" and "inexperienced with city life" and we would be "taken advantage of" lol. Plus, we ARE their only daughters ya know! I can see how they would want to protect us, but let go for a week! lol I did, however mention all these things to my mother and she said she would talk with my father. Also, I told my mother they should call the hotel each nite at a certain time to see we made it back safe. Me and my friend decided to wait until April though (tax returns=more $$! lol, plus Christmas, etc!!!!:D). I never knew Id get so many responses!! Thank you!! And, yes- lets all go together! hehehe:happyface :D :happyface
