I think they're being a little unfair to Phil Burns, he was in the second episode of the series, the article gives the impression he was let go immediately, that simply wasn't the case.

The early Seinfeld episodes have wide gaps between them, episode 1 was televised midyear 1989, episode 2 (Phil Burns) appears in the late spring of 1990, the next episode with Jerry's parents wasn't until season 2, episode 2 late January 1991. I know Barney Martin was committed to a series titled Sydney which ran on CBS in the spring of 1990 maybe Jerry and Larry wanted him for the show in the first place but he wasn't available. Jerry's parents weren't a big part of the series until season 4 prior to season 4 Burns had made one appearance and Barney Martin two.
