Russell Crowe will step into the late Edward Woodward's shoes when he takes the lead in "The Equalizer", the long-gestating feature film take on the classic CBS '80s action series.

In the series, which ran for four seasons, Woodward played an aging New York vigilante with a mysterious past. People in need find him through a newspaper ad: "Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer."

The L.A Times says that it's early days - there's no script, and Bob & Harvey Weinstein are no longer on the project, but Mace Neufeld ("The Hunt for Red October") remains onboard as a producer, and with Crowe now attached to play McCall the project should pick up steam (unless those poor returns on "The A-Team", another feature film adaption of an '80s TV series, puts them off).

One of my favorite shows of the 1980's...I'm sure they'll screw it up somehow.

I don't understand the aversion to remakes. If they're done well, it's nice to see a show you liked brought back to life. That's how I see it anyway. Russell Crowe is perfect for Edward Woodward's role.
