2023–24 United States network television schedule - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_United_States_network_television_schedule

Blog story: https://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2023/05/cbs-upfront-2023-24-fall-2023-schedule.html

CBS announced its 2023-2024 primetime programming lineup of CBS Originals, featuring three new dramas, one new comedy, special event programming and 22 returning series. CBS Sports will also present SUPER BOWL LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, live on CBS and Paramount+ from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev.

The three new drama series include ELSBETH, starring Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD. After leaving her successful legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City, Elsbeth finds herself jockeying with the toast of the NYPD, Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce). Working alongside Elsbeth is Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), a stoic and ethical officer who quickly develops an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insightful and offbeat ways. ELSBETH is based on the character featured in THE GOOD WIFE and THE GOOD FIGHT.

MATLOCK stars Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills. As Matty endeavors to establish herself in her new high-stakes world, she works alongside the firm’s younger associates – the charismatic Billy (David Del Rio) and the uber ambitious Sarah (Leah Lewis). MATLOCK is inspired by the classic television series of the same name.

The previously announced drama TRACKER stars Justin Hartley as lone-wolf survivalist Colter Shaw, who roams the country as a “reward seeker,” using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family. TRACKER is set to premiere in the highly coveted post-Super Bowl timeslot on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024.

Also premiering later in the season is the new comedy POPPA’S HOUSE, starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. Wayans stars as legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host (Essence Atkins) is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.

The new schedule of CBS Original series also includes the return of the #1 new broadcast series FIRE COUNTRY, #1 comedy YOUNG SHELDON, the #1 broadcast drama NCIS and #1 news program 60 MINUTES.

“CBS programming across entertainment, news and sports continues to appeal to audiences on all platforms, including Paramount+, the fastest-growing streaming service in the U.S.,” said George Cheeks, president and chief executive officer of CBS. “It all starts with a winning broadcast Network that has an undeniable track record for nurturing long-running franchises and launching new hits every year. The new shows and schedule set to launch next year, combined with the Super Bowl, NCAA Tournament, the GRAMMY Awards and other Network events will make America’s top-rated Network an even bigger force next year.”

“Along with our outstanding team at the Network, I am incredibly excited to introduce four new series with big-name talent portraying distinct, bold, engaging characters,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “These new shows from marquee auspices capture everything our viewers love about a CBS series – unique personalities, suspenseful drama, intrigue, high stakes, and relatable laugh-out-loud comedy with heart and humor. The new additions to our lineup are a stellar complement to our winning slate of returning series and we are confident they will resonate with our viewers on broadcast and streaming platforms.”

In addition to CBS’ new and returning top series, the Network’s year-round schedule of original programming also features annual high-profile events, including the prestigious Tony Awards, the GRAMMY Awards, the CMT Music Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors.

CBS Sports’ portfolio of marquee properties and championships will feature the NFL, with a schedule highlighted by the most-watched NFL window at 4:25 PM, ET on Sundays, as well as Wild Card and Divisional Playoff games plus the AFC Championship in January, NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in March, the Masters Tournament in April, the PGA Championship in May, and the UEFA Champions League Final in June. This summer, CBS Sports will broadcast the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, including the PGA TOUR Championship in August. Big Ten Football comes to CBS beginning this fall, along with the SEC ON CBS, including the championship game in December. CBS will also air the NWSL Championship game in primetime in November.

MONDAY – Monday’s winning slate returns intact with the popular comedies THE NEIGHBORHOOD and BOB ♥ ABISHOLA opening the night from 8:00-9:00 PM. At 9:00 PM, the #1 broadcast series, NCIS, returns for season 21, leading into the third season of NCIS: HAWAI`I at 10:00 PM.

TUESDAY – FBI Tuesday returns with the top-rated lineup of the night. FBI opens the night at 8:00 PM, followed by FBI: INTERNATIONAL at 9:00 PM and FBI: MOST WANTED concluding the block of heroic storytelling at 10:00 PM.

WEDNESDAY – Two iconic reality series will expand to 90 minutes each to deliver a full night of adventure and challenges. The groundbreaking broadcast hit and most-watched reality show on Paramount+, SURVIVOR, hosted by Jeff Probst, kicks off the night at 8:00 PM. At 9:30 PM, the globe-trotting, Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE hosted by Phil Keoghan returns, ending at 11:00 PM.

THURSDAY – Thursdays kick off with the top two comedies on television. The #1 comedy, YOUNG SHELDON, anchors the night at 8:00 PM, leading into the #2 comedy series, GHOSTS, at 8:30 PM. At 9:00 PM, the witty drama SO HELP ME TODD, starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin, returns and serves as a perfect pairing with the humorous new drama ELSBETH, starring Carrie Preston, at 10:00 PM.

FRIDAY – CBS’ most dominant night will feature the return of S.W.A.T. at 8:00 PM followed at 9:00 PM with television’s #1 new series and CBS’ #1 streaming series on Paramount+, FIRE COUNTRY. At 10:00 PM, Friday’s consistent winner, BLUE BLOODS starring Tom Selleck, closes out one of television’s strongest nights as it returns for its 14th season.

SATURDAY – CBS’ Saturday night lineup features encore broadcasts of the Network’s popular dramas at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, followed at 10:00 PM by the true crime docuseries 48 HOURS, Saturday’s #1 non-sports primetime series.

SUNDAY –As always, CBS’ Sunday night starts at 7:00 PM with 60 MINUTES, television’s acclaimed #1 news program, followed at 8:00 PM by the new legal drama MATLOCK, starring Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates. At 9:00 PM, one of television’s top shows, averaging over 10 million multiplatform viewers a week and reigning as the most-watched drama among African American viewers, THE EQUALIZER, starring Queen Latifah, returns for a fourth season. During the first half of the season, when the CBS Sunday primetime lineup often starts later due to late afternoon NFL broadcasts, the 10:00 PM slot will feature encore broadcasts of popular Network dramas. CSI: VEGAS returns for its third season to anchor the 10:00 PM slot later in the year.

NCIS: Hawaii and CSI: Vegas did not deserve their renewals at all. They are consistently the weakest rated links of their nights and would/will do a lot worse than East New York did on overrun plagued Sundays. And it is another reason to hate streamers becoming so popular, CBS' unreasonable stacking demands for East New York that are more than the typical demands largely cost that brilliant show its renewal, along with being unowned.

My thoughts on two scheduling decisions by CBS for next season (I tried submitting this comment on TVLine just hours after this Fall schedule was announced, but it just went unpublished):

1. I'm not happy about the Matlock reboot with Kathy Bates being ordered to series, let alone being slotted after 60 Minutes. I know the networks want to have as big an audience for their new shows as possible every year, and for them to become successes and long-term utility players over multiple seasons, but the 2023 version of Matlock being slotted after 60 Minutes will make it impossible to be a one-season failure. The first scheduling move I see is The Equalizer 2021 and Matlock 2023 swapping their Sunday-night timeslots at midseason.

2. CBS once again blows yet another opportunity to air one of their comedies after the Super Bowl. It should've been Poppa's House premiering after Super Bowl LVIII instead of that new Tracker show. Why waste the post-SB slot on an unowned drama show? I have a feeling that the post-Super Bowl slot is losing prestige each and every year because of decisions like this. I always feel it's time for the networks to just stop pushing unowned shows altogether because of what happened with East New York.

[/I].Matlock will probably get strong premiere ratings, but hopefully tumbles sharply from that like Bionic Woman's freefall. Wisdom of the Crowd aired Sundays at 8:00 and was a failure, being cancelled after one season with no back order. Instinct got a 2nd season that received burn-off treatment and was gone for good after that. God Friended Me was cancelled after just two seasons with the direct 60 Minutes lead-in.

CBS is the first network to announce when their scripted shows return. Tracker will still premiere after the Super Bowl, then the next day their veteran shows start with season premieres. It is the same as the original fall schedule announced with one difference: Matlock remake has been pushed to fall 2024. Sunday lineup will be 60 Minutes at 7:00, The Equalizer staying at 8:00 instead of moving an hour later, Tracker in its regular time at 9:00, and CSI: Vegas at 10:00. Monday-Friday is the same as the original fall schedule, which includes new series Elsbeth on Thursdays. Poppa's House which would have been midseason this year has also been pushed to the 2024-2025 season.

BREAKING NEWS: Blue Bloods to End Run with a Two-Part Seeason 14, to Air Next Spring and Next Fall

Blue Bloods not waiting for a decline in its annual Nielsen rank (it ranked as the sixth-most-watched U.S. broadcast series for both of its previous two seasons). Blue Bloods's final season will consist of a total of 18 episodes, the first 10 of which will air this spring while the remaining 8 will air in Fall 2024 – after the Paris Olympics. Apparently CBS didn't want Blue Bloods beating Dallas's number of seasons on the air. Thanks a lot, Fire Country.

Tracker premiere was really good, much better than boring True Lies from CBS midseason last year. I hope CBS is behind Tracker despite being unowned, still horrible how East New York got screwed over because of unreasonable stacking demands that went above normal. For season 2 I would like Tracker to move to Thursdays at 10:00 away from overrun Sundays, dumb looking Elsbeth is going to flop hard. Then the Matlock refake can stick to Sundays as originally planned.

For season 2 I would like Tracker to move to Thursdays at 10:00 away from overrun Sundays, dumb looking Elsbeth is going to flop hard. Then the Matlock refake can stick to Sundays as originally planned.

Now, the worry begins over how good Tracker's ratings and writing will be in the long-term. There's still the potential for Tracker eventually meeting the same fate as 2 Broke Girls and Life in Pieces and East New York. Just how long of a run do you predict for Tracker? I think five seasons, because I'd rather Tracker eventually have a fate like Person of Interest (a series buried by CBS for no reason other than non-ownership, at least that one has a proper send-off, however unpleased I was at its scheduling and resulting low ratings).

Five seasons for Tracker would be great if it can keep up the quality, Justin Hartley is a good lead. I am one of many Person of Interest fans who dropped it partway. POI was great when Carter was the main woman. But I couldn't stand Shaw, she also took too much screen time from Reese. Plus it got way too dark and depressing, wasn't like that in the first two seasons. I dropped Person of Interest at the end of season three. Even owned shows can get cut off too soon. Scorpion and Man With a Plan both deserved more than four seasons. I hate what became the Scorpion series finale with no season five to make things right.

Good for nothing Fire Country might be headed for a well deserved sophomore slump. Last night was down over 35% to an 0.33 demo. Lame duck S.W.A.T. actually outrated Fire Country at 0.36.

Actually, both Fire Country and the 2017 version of S.W.A.T. both beat Blue Bloods in the demo last Friday (the final ratings for February 23 had both S.W.A.T. 2017 and Fire Country at 0.38, while Blue Bloods had an 0.32 even though BB was the most-watched primetime show of that day, with FC not too far behind by just a couple hundred thousand).

Maybe CBS doesn't have to order a Fire Country spinoff series after all after Blue Bloods finishes its run, but if such a spinoff is launched, it's proof that CBS stands for "Craft Bull *****". Always launching spinoffs just for the sake of it, and too many spinoffs would take up too much space on the network.

BREAKING NEWS: Tracker is Renewed for Season Two

https://deadline.com/2024/03/tracker-justin-hartley-renewed-season-2-cbs-1235845019/

The viewership for Tracker's initial couple of episodes after its post-Super-Bowl-LVIII launch could alleviate some of my doubts about the series's long-term future, but not all, as its ratings and writing for this unowned production could drop off at any time as its original run goes on.

After Tracker had beaten the 2021 version of The Equalizer in its second installment on February 18, the February 25th installment of Tracker actually beat 60 Minutes in both the 18-49 demo and total viewers (0.48 and 7.1 million vs. 0.39 and 6.8 million). Something like this has not been seen since Touched by an Angel in 1997. Does this mean CBS Studios can't still be brought in to co-produce Tracker alongside 20th Television for the sake of its long-term security?

BREAKING NEWS: The 2017 version of S.W.A.T. is rather shockingly renewed for an eighth season.

This is the first time I've actually seen a final-season confirmation (not a cancellation) actually get reversed. Clearly, this does not come with the concerns of S.W.A.T. 2017's ratings going down and production costs rising during next season to the point of a repeat of its (first) cancellation in May 2023, and such a cancellation will stick this time, so there is no proper conclusion for this series. I do hope that S.W.A.T. 2017 does not struggle creatively next season, or its 22-episode order doesn't get shortened because of the potential IATSE strike this Summer. Otherwise, such cancellation-without-a-proper-sendoff fears will be confirmed in May of 2025.

Deadline (https://deadline.com/2024/04/swat-renewed-season-8-cbs-1235882068/) says the final episode of its current season seven (which was still being filmed at the time of this renewal announcement) is not being rewritten in light of this renewal. I can't say I'm not disappointed, as supportive as I am of S.W.A.T. 2017 just for far outlasting the original 1975 version of S.W.A.T..

BREAKING NEWS: The 2017 version of S.W.A.T. is rather shockingly renewed for an eighth season.

This is the first time I've actually seen a final-season confirmation (not a cancellation) actually get reversed.7th Heaven's final season announced for season 10 was reversed, and it went on to season 11. That was a merger of networks though, with the WB becoming the CW.

So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas did not deserve their renewals this season at the expense of screwed over East New York. Therefore, I am not sad to see their cancellation announcements today. Now to stop with the 90 minute episodes of their reality crap. The Amazing Race should go back to a bridge show between Survivor seasons. TAR does not need two seasons a year unless one of them is in summer.

I always thought CSI: Vegas should move to Paramount+ if it got cancelled by CBS. I doubt that's gonna happen now given that streaming services' mass cancellations for cost-cutting content write-downs can happen at anytime. Both CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd will certainly end their original runs on massive unresolved cliffhangers now.

Also, I thought East New York was competing with the 2017 version of S.W.A.T. for the same slot on its schedule before the former's cancellation after last season? I guess that's why you're resenting the eighth-season renewal of S.W.A.T. 2017 after planning season seven as its last.

And there would have been room for both if the reality crap didn't expand to 90 minutes. My mom watched season 1 of CSI: Vegas but lost interest when William Petersen and Jorja Fox left.

^^Also, last Friday (April 19) was the first time I have seen broadcast-network cancellations and WWE releases on the same day. Jinder Mahal, a former WWE Champion, was among the five WWE Superstars released last Friday and Saturday. Also let go is Xia Li (WWE's first Chinese female superstar), who never won any championships within the company.

(Apologies for the off-topic. This is what you get when you have a discussion with somebody who has followed professional wrestling for as long as I have.)

BREAKING NEWS: The cast and crew of NCIS: Hawaii will be cleaning out their desks after its current third season.

This should be seen as a sign that networks should just stop creating spinoffs of shows just for the sake of it. This is the second straight year that CBS cancelled a Top-20-ranked show (after East New York last season).

Do you think NCIS: Hawaii would still have gotten cancelled if its third season had a 20-plus episode order?

What I would make their fall schedule

Sunday
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 Matlock
9:00 The Equalizer
10:00 FBI: International- This show is going downhill fast with first Heida Reed leaving and now Luke Kleintank.

Monday
8:00 NCIS: Sydney
9:00 NCIS
10:00 NCIS: Origins

Tuesday
8:00 FBI
9:00 New Drama
10:00 FBI: Most Wanted

Wednesday
8:00 Survivor/The Amazing Race/Survivor- TAR is not strong enough to keep airing two seasons a year unless one of them is in summer.
9:00 Tracker- This will make Wednesdays a lot stronger. And it is good counter-programming to Abbott Elementary.
10:00 New Drama

Thursday- Bring back the two hour comedy block. It would be nice to get a Sheldon in College spin-off, all they would need is a new deal for Iain Armitage then cast the supporting actors. But I doubt that happens in time for fall.
8:00 The Neighborhood
8:30 Poppa's House
9:00 Ghosts
9:30 Georgie & Mandy- Keep this single cam like Young Sheldon was to pair better with Ghosts.
10:00 Elsbeth

Friday
8:00 S.W.A.T.- Losing Luca and Street is one thing. But they have to reverse Deacon's retirement, show would really go down without Jay Harrington and not worth being uncancelled.
9:00 Fire Country- Pass on Sheriff Country spin-off, one of these shows is bad enough.
10:00 Blue Bloods- Work with Tom Selleck's pitch to extend the final season and go over 300 episodes overall.

Ending/Cancelled
Young Sheldon
Bob Hearts Abishola
NCIS: Hawaii
So Help Me Todd
CSI: Vegas
Lingo- Being relegated to summer burn-off despite a strike sized hole last fall is a good sign this version of Lingo is done.

CBS declares itself winner of the truncated 2023-2024 broadcast TV season (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/cbs-most-watched-broadcast-network-1235989381/)

CBS has been averaging 5.59 million viewers this season, putting it 580,000 ahead of its closest competitor NBC. Tracker, TV's most-watched new show, helped boost CBS, as did NCIS, Young Sheldon and FBI.

Okay... why have the Matlock reboot follow 60 Minutes? I'm rather hesitant on original, unique series on broadcast TV getting screwed over for more spinoffs and reboots. I did say earlier that a suggestion like that would drag down the 2021 version of The Equalizer. Tracker going to Wednesdays would mean a huge ratings decline, because you're also putting it up against Chicago Fire. With the boffo viewership it had been getting since its post-Super-Bowl premiere, Tracker is more deserving of the 60 Minutes lead-in than any other program. Don't waste the Sundays at 8pm hour on another unproven freshman show. And there's always Fire Country sliding over to 10 pm if Blue Bloods can't go over 300 episodes once CBS execs pass on Tom Selleck's pitch.

Matlock was what was originally announced Sundays at 8:00 last year. With the Survivor lead-in and buzz from season 1, Tracker would easily beat Chicago Fire head-to-head. Did you not see the official CBS schedule that was released on Thursday? Fire Country is not moving to 10:00. S.W.A.T. will move where Blue Bloods was with NCIS: Sydney airing at 8:00. Sydney will flop hard in its new lesser night but it is just a placeholder anyway. With Sheriff Country being picked up for the 2025-2026 season, Fridays then will likely be Fire Country/Sheriff Country/S.W.A.T.

The Top 100 shows of the 2023-2024 TV season: Tracker leads all non-football programs, canceled NCIS: Hawai’i tops several returning CBS dramas (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/most-popular-tv-shows-highest-rated-2023-2024-season-tracker-survivor-1236015844/)

Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football and Thursday Night Football ranked No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 for the 2023-2024 season in total viewers, according to Variety. No. 4 was Justin Hartley-led freshman drama series Tracker, followed by NCIS, Young Sheldon and FBI. NCIS: Hawai’i ranked No. 16 in its third and final season, which was up over its second season, topping returning CBS dramas Elsbeth, FBI: Most Wanted, Fire Country, FBI: International, NCIS: Sydney and S.W.A.T. Also, only one scripted cable series, When Calls the Heart, made the Top 100.
