View Full Version : Any idea when Antenna TV will add some new content again?
1980stvfan 05-07-2023, 05:41 PM They havent added any new shows since April 2022 since they added "My Favorite Martian". Because of the creation of their sister channel "Rewind Tv" there has been a lack of content. I wonder because of all these nostagia channels like METV, LAFF and Cozi its hard to add new content.
BigManMike 05-07-2023, 06:09 PM I just hope some of their shows will eventually leave and move to Catchy.
cd637299 05-07-2023, 06:21 PM Yeah it has been pretty stagnant.
The Rewind channel has a lot to do with that.
When AntennaTV began, it wasn’t 100% sitcoms. It had a Saturday morning cartoon series, a few dramas, and IIRC it had movies as well.
The Johnny Carson “coup” in 2016 may have bled Antenna TV dry for money. I dunno.
But ATV certainly could add non-sitcom material, if it’s that sorry in the inventory right now.

Well there's a lot of good shows that rarely if ever get aired.
Doctor, Doctor (sitcom that ran on CBS)
Dave's World
Less Than Perfect
The Practice (Danny Thomas' show)
Doc (the MTM sitcom)
Arnie
Phyllis
Flo
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
We Got it Maid
Nanny and the Professor
Doris Day Show
The Mother’s In-Law
Wait til Your Father gets Home
Just to name a few.
cd637299 05-07-2023, 10:28 PM ^ Aside from Doris Day Show, a hunk of those shows above had very few episodes, and may work on weekends only—but that would break the monotony.
And even Doris Day kept changing the format almost yearly!
I would like to see “Arnie” again. I remember how my Dad used to LOL just at the name of the workplace—the Continental Flange Co.!

Those shows can easily be placed on the weekends one episode per day. That would keep them from cycling too fast.
Add Room 222 to my list.
stevea 05-08-2023, 09:53 AM There's a precedent for them with that. A few years ago they ran The Paul Lynde Show and Lotsa Luck on Saturdays.
Also I'll add House Calls and Make Room For Grandaddy to the list.

They also ran My Mother the Car and It's About Time on weekends.
Also with Burns and Allen plus Jack Benny running from 5-6am (eastern time) they could pick up some other '50's early '60's shows like I Married Joan, Love That Bob, My Little Margie, Hey Mulligan, How to Marry a Millionaire, and run them from 1-5am

There were some rumors a few years ago that they wanted to add The Farmer's Daughter, but they could not get broadcast-quality masters from Sony (and that probably means the show was never mastered to videotape in the 1990s). So, at least for Love That Bob, that could be an issue. I don't know about the others.

On MeTV, seasons 3 thru 5, 12, and the last half of 11 of My Three Sons all are somehow derived from 16mm film sources, and look horrible. They were never syndicated in the videotape era. Neither were seasons 1 and 2, but Paramount actually remastered those for DVD and evidently also created broadcast masters.

Also add When Things Were Rotten and Bridget Loves Bernie.
cd637299 05-14-2023, 09:28 AM As to “Bridget,” the story went that it was controversial at the time, and rerunning it, even on weekends, could raise a red flag. Decades did a Binge of every episode (a one season show) about 5 years ago; I recorded the first 2 eps.
Whereas I realize that most of us here are likely over 50, and reminisce about how things were….there’s also the matter of a show being “dated.” The jokes wouldn’t resonate now, and if a rerun keeps rerunning, it WILL run out of gas.
Topical humor doesn’t last.
It amazed me that Decades ran “Laugh-in” as long as it did. There was one of those on-screen text jokes during The Party scene about Averell Harriman. Who? you say? There ya go.
Even in 1983 when Miami’s channel 39 debuted a few months earlier, they had 30-minute Laugh-in shows. A 1968 ep had Dan Rowan reading “1988, News of the Future, 20 Years from Now……U.S. President Ronald Reagan—“ and the crowd burst with laughter. Who knew??
As I myself too would like to see Room 222, which lasted more than a year, it likely would be considered “camp” today—unintentional humor. Schools just aren’t like that today.
Decades would often preface a show by explaining what years it ran, and the significance of the show. Decades was an ambitious project, and when Weigel swapped it out for StartTV on the CBS O&O’s like my local WFOR, I wasn’t thrilled. Oh well.

Funny thing with Bridget Loves Bernie is that it was canceled even with having good ratings since people couldn't accept a mixed religion marriage. Yet All in The Family ran at the same time and was even more controversial than Bridget Loves Bernie.
If the show were in reruns somewhere then weekends would work best. Actually with most all of the shows we've listed could run on a rotating bases on weekends. As someone mentioned they do The Paul Lynde Show and Lotsa Luck on weekends as well as My Mother the Car and It's About Time. With the Paul Lynde Show they didn't even have the complete series to show.
Laugh-In still runs overnights on Catchy Comedy. Yes many of the jokes are dated. It's now a humorous history class. Some of the jokes and visual references are truly inappropriate but somehow are still shown. I'm thinking some of the Black Face, and tribal references. Yet there are other topics that to amaze me to still be running. At the very least there should be a disclaimer on those episodes. And yes, President Regan predicted that far back. That was something.
Decades TV had an interesting vision which ended up morphing into a rerun station. The references to the decade each show ran and its significance was helpful. Plus the old commercials were fun to watch again. Here in NYC metro area we too got stuck with Start TV probably a year or so later Decades TV resurfaced on a different channel. I was thrilled with it returning.
Alan Brady's Hair 05-14-2023, 11:41 AM was canceled even with having good ratings since people couldn't accept a mixed religion marriage.
I think the question was more nuanced. Orthodox Jews, in particular, were criticizing that the issues were being discussed in a cavalier way:
The program treats intermarriage in a cavalier, cute, condoning fashion, and deals with its inevitable problems as though they're instantly, easily solvable.
https://www.nytimes.com/1973/02/07/archives/bridget-loves-bernie-attacked-by-jewish-groups.html
It's a very common dynamic:
Producer: "We're putting on this show to start a dialogue about this issue."
Audience: "This is what we think."
Producer: "CENSOR...BIGOT...(take your pick)."
cd637299 05-14-2023, 01:35 PM Getting briefly off of sitcoms, yet still talking classic TV, a genre you don’t see in reruns anymore is….
Medical dramas.
When was the last time we saw Ben Casey, Dr. Kildare, or even the 7-season Medical Center with Chad Everett? Cozi TV did have Marcus Welby for a few months, but I assume that the response was lukewarm.
Heck….where’s ER now??? That was awards city, was it not?
Constant advances in medicine make shows like the above totally camp.
So like I said before, with sitcoms, one has to think about how the humor would resonate now.
Some shows, I feel, made it an absolute point NOT to make topical references that would go over the head of viewers a generation later. Personally I think “The Bob Newhart Show” did an excellent job of staying fresh, even to today.

Believe it or not, there was a time when California was a red state, and Reagan had a lot of older Republican celebrity friends. So predicting that Reagan would eventually become President in the 80's, was hardly a stretch. It wouldn't even be a big shocker, if some of the cast of Laugh-In also voted for him.

1960'sTVfan 05-14-2023, 06:35 PM Talking about Laugh-In and Medical Center, I agree that these shows tend to be dated, Laugh-In because of the topical humor that was relevant at the time, and Medical Center because of the changes in medicine in the 50 or so years since the series originally aired.
But I still enjoy watching these shows because of the nostalgia, it's like meeting up with an old friend and finding out things are still the same, I guess that's why the classic shows are called comfort TV.
And from an acting and visual viewpoint, I also prefer classic shows over the current ones.

Pretty much this. I watch these shows almost as much as for a history lesson as to get a chuckle. But being born in 1959, I can do that.
There will come a time when viewers will be leaving in droves, due to the age gaps.
Decades approached classic TV IMO in a way that younger ppl might take an interest. Now that’s gone.
How many watched TV Land when it began? It was pretty much MeTV 28 years earlier. I think that TVL left that classic attitude WAYYYY too fast, but it’s possible that they could see that the old stuff wouldn’t work forever. (Myself not having cable/sat, I was n/a.)

That's why, IMO, in 5-7 years (assuming it's still around), Antenna TV will look totally different, particularly at times they air the oldest shows.
Decades approached classic TV IMO in a way that younger ppl might take an interest. Now that’s gone.
Around 15-20 years ago, TV Land (back when it was good) attempted to give interesting facts about the upcoming show, which might have generated interest. This was when the Viacom networks could take a little time to do innovative bumpers. Now any non-program time must be ads or promos.

Hi, just wanted to ask you a question. You said antenna tv has said they are not changing their schedule for Spring. I was wondering if there was any mention of the Summer Schedule or Fall Changes Coming?
I do agree antenna tv needs some fresh programming. Although look at Bachelor Father ever since it has Returned it hasn’t received an Evening & Primetime & LateNight airring, in addition they haven’t allowed the show to have a Marathon now if it’s along the lines of limited episodes they could of had a Father of all Fathers Marathon for Fathers Day. Airring Bachelor Father 12:00AM-5:00AM While Father Knows Best 5:00AM-5:00AM for the 2023 Fathers Day Marathon stunt.
MikeLutton 05-14-2023, 11:21 PM it has on their fb page a Father knows best marathon for Fathers day june 18th

PaperClips 05-15-2023, 09:35 AM Antenna TV doesn't care about programming - they care about Commercials. They run more commercials than any network on TV. Programming is as cheap as they can get it (most of their shows can be found for free on Roku). They constantly run one commercial after another and they make horrific cuts in shows. It is impossible to watch.

icecream 05-15-2023, 12:55 PM Yet another Father Knows Best marathon is hardly anything new or special. Better and fresher marathons for Father's Day this year would have been Bachelor Father or Diff'rent Strokes (yes an 80s show but they have worse stuff from the Rewind era on their schedule like Designing Unfunny Women).
PaperClips 05-15-2023, 01:11 PM As I said, the entire thing is a set up to be an infomercial. It is ridiculous.

Their entire ad structure is schlock commercials, involving either contributions to questionable charities, iffy Medicare ads (Medicare contracts should go only to known companies), (as you say) infomercial-style ads, some of which go a full five minutes, or other dubious ads.
A problem which has gone on for years is incorrect clock sync with Antenna TV and its affiliates. I thought it was the fault of the local affiliate, but a friend in the New York market tells me it happens there, too. The Antenna TV clock is slower than the affiliate clocks (by about a second) and their middle break goes right to a local ad. So the last second of show (often involving dialog) gets chopped, because everything runs so tight now. It's really unprofessional and needs to be corrected. But of course it won't be.

Actually The Bob Newhart Show treated mental health issues very well. There was no real disrespect towards and of the "patients". My dad, who was a psychiatrist, had this show on his "must see" list. And he was really compassionate towards his patients and those with mental health issues.

I broke up your list to read easier.
Wow, that's some list. Donna Reed is on Catchy Comedy, Patty Duke and Joey Bishop are on Nost TV which was Classic Rerun TV. You can watch that channel on line.
The other choices are a nice mix of stuff. Hot L Baltimore was one of the best offers from Norman Lear. He and She was one of the first "smart" comedies which is where The Mary Tyler Moore Show probably derived from.
The Little People was also known as The Brian Keith Show. I had to look that one up since I never knew it from the original name.
One more to add could be Mister Ed.
cd637299 05-18-2023, 08:47 AM As to the above series, to keep it on topic, I know that to show any and all of them would require a deal with whomever has the rights to the programs at this time…..and THAT could be a daring procedure.
I personally see no reason why AntennaTV or similar channels couldn’t set aside maybe three weekend hours, devoted to these “camp” comedies, that only had a handful of episodes. (“Co-Ed Fever”? Yikes!) A different three hours every week with six different shows.
Blansky’s Beauties, Who’s Watching the Kids, Out of the Blue, A New Kind of Family (those two were embarrassing)…..basically any show out there that had a brief life. Maybe hire a famous TV critic (Leonard Maltin perhaps?) to introduce the show, throw a little trivia at it….Something like that would make it watchable.
I would call it “Weekend Camp-Out.”

Emergency! is a good show, there's more action in it because it has the paramedics that go out on rescues, while Medical Center is basically a straightforward medical drama.

Yes, shows that are strictly inside a hospital, well, meh.
As to Bobby Sherman, actually quitting an acting/singing career to do this, surely speaks volumes! Gotta hand it to him.

24/7 reruns 05-19-2023, 09:19 PM Do you know if Nost TV runs The Joey Bishop Show episodes unedited or are they edited like the Antenna TV airings were?
I don't. If they don't you can always stream the show for free from many streaming services.
