The procedural (https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/63187-swat-in-the-media/page/2/#comments) drama (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1397b62/swat_canceled_at_cbs_after_six_seasons/) starred Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, a S.W.A.T. sargeant tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles. Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, he strives to bridge the divide between his two worlds. The cast also included Rochelle Aytes as Hondo’s girlfriend Nichelle, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, David Lim as Victor Tan, and Alex Russell as Jim Street.

Season 6, which is currently on the air, is averaging 6.8 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49 according to Nielsen’s Live + 7 data from late April.

The Season 6 finale, titled “Legacy,” will air on May 19. Per the logline, the team works with the DEA and their iron-jawed leader, Mack Boyle (Timothy Hutton), to stop a ruthless cartel boss waging war on the streets of Los Angeles as he exacts revenge on those who killed his son. The episode was written by Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier and directed by Billy Gierhart.

“For six seasons, the amazing talents of the ‘S.W.A.T.’ cast led by Shemar Moore, the writers, producers and crew guided by Executive Producers Shawn Ryan, Andy Dettman and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas brought us compelling, action packed episodes that also addressed important social issues and contributed to the success of our primetime line up,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “We sincerely thank them for their incredible work and passion and also thank our dedicated fans who tuned in every week.”

“S.W.A.T.” was based on the series of the same name created by Robert Hamner that ran on ABC for one season from 1975 to 1976, as well as the 2003 film written by David Ayer and David McKenna and directed by Clark Johnson, with stars including Colin Farrell, Jeremy Renner, Brian Van Holt, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez and L.L. Cool J.

Sony Pictures Television produces “S.W.A.T.” in association with CBS Studios. Executive producers include Shawn Ryan, Justin Lin, Neal Moritz, Marney Hochman, Pavun Shetty, Billy Gierhart, Andy Dettman and Paul Bernard.

Shemar Moore says Cancelling "S.W.A.T." "Makes No Sense," Hopes CBS will "Realize They Made a Mistake"
by Dave Nemetz
May 6, 2023

"S.W.A.T." fans aren’t happy that CBS cancelled the drama after six seasons — and neither is star Shemar Moore.

Moore, who plays Hondo on the long-running procedural, responded to the cancellation news in an Instagram video.

“I’m a little bit sad. I’m a lot of bit sad… S.W.A.T. got cancelled. It makes no sense.”

“The last two years, we’ve been killing it… We’ve done nothing wrong. We’ve done everything that was asked for. Did you know that I am the only African American male lead on network TV?… S.W.A.T. is the most diverse show on CBS.”

(For the record, CBS also has The Neighborhood starring Cedric the Entertainer and The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah, and shows like The CW’s All American also have Black leading men.)

He added that when he posts this video, “I will get in a lot of trouble with CBS because I’m calling them out because they’ve been wonderful to me for 26 out of my 29-year career.

But to abruptly get told that you’re cancelled when you led us to believe last week, and the week before that, that we would have some semblance of a Season 7 to at least say goodbye, if not continue, and to abruptly be told you’re done… now there’s a lot of politics, a lot of things called licensing, a lot of you won’t understand what that means… it’s all about money, y’all.”

But he ended on an upbeat note: “I don’t think we’re done. CBS is either gonna wake up and realize they made a mistake. Sony is gonna do their math and realize that this is not the right move. I hope we can have a kumbaya and come back together and continue this show because it’s a good time for families across the world.”

I knew Shemar Moore was wrong about being the only male black lead since there is Cedric the Entertainer. But really, a TV news site thinks Queen Latifah is a man?

CBS is coming to the S.W.A.T. team's rescue.

Days after canceling the popular police procedural, the network reversed the decision and granted the show a seventh and final season.

"We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year," CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope said in a joint statement Monday. "S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show's storylines and characters, which audiences deserve."

They added, "Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers and crew and everyone who has contributed to the success of S.W.A.T. We look forward to its return next season."

EW confirmed Friday that CBS had axed the show, which for six seasons has followed Shemar Moore's Sgt. Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. lieutenant forced to balance loyalty to his job and to the streets where he grew up.

The news came as a surprise to fans of the show, given that its viewership had spiked since its fifth season. Moore also shared his shock in an emotional Instagram post shortly after the cancellation news broke, calling out the network for ending its "most diverse" series and encouraging fans to "make some f---ing noise and let 'em know that canceling S.W.A.T. is a f---ing mistake."

"S.W.A.T. got canceled. It makes no sense," he said in the video. "Read the articles: We are the best show on Friday nights at 8 o'clock for CBS. The last two years, we have been killing it. Us and the fire show [Fire Country] that comes on right after us, and respect to those brothers and sisters. Respect to them. We've done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for."
