For those of you who shopped at the mall a lot in the 90's probably remember going to Mervyn's but I bet some of you don't remember this famous Mervyn's commercial that debuted in 1992 and had a very famous catchphrase that became a pop culture favorite of the 90's
Now repeat after me:
"Open open open"
Trying to attract and appeal to a wider audience Mervyn's started having sales to appeal to their new audience and hopeful of garnering a new image with a series of funny commercials with people wishing and praying to become the first people to enter the store by repeating the famous chant until the doors to Mervyn's finally opened. These commercials remained such a hit that "open open open" became the official catchphrase/chant of Mervyn's in their other commercials until 2007. In 2008 Mervyn's announced bankruptcy and closed all stores but these commercials and this chant left a legacy on mall shoppers. Mom and I used to love Mervyn's for their awesome clothing and nice sales and I think this is who Kohl's modeled themselves after and we bought a few things from Mervyn's during our shopping trips

Ah Mervyns yes I know it well. Spent a lot of money on school clothes there and Millers Outpost back in the day.

Many here probably haven’t heard of Mervyns. It was primarily a California store (owned by Target) though it did branch out into a few other states (AZ, FLA, CO, MN etc) before going under.
