When we mention "the 80s" certain styles come to mind, "the 90s", "the 70s", etc.... Phrases like, "That's SO 80s!"!, etc....

I wonder if decades from other centuries had their own styles, music and fashion... I mean when we look back at the 1800s, we see it as pretty much all the same... BUT did the 1880s have a certain style, the 1870s, etc.... Like in 1923 were people saying, "OMG your clothes are SOOOOOO 1880s!"?

I love history since I was a child. I know a lot for a neophyte. History and Social Studies were far and away my favorite (and only subjects I liked) in school.

I think concerning ugly clothing and style was the 1600’s. Silly ruffs (the ruffled thing worn around the neck by men and women), big stupid hats and overly large belts. See how the Puritans dressed. I can trace my father’s ancestors back to William the Conquerer and there is a picture of a church with the family and all of them are wearing ruffs, even the little kids.

It also seems like in the 19th Century at least in America everyone wore basically black and white clothing, and lots of clothing. No colors and it isn’t because the pictures are black and white, the people mainly just wore black and white.

1970’s clothing, I don’t know the story there. I was a child then, and looking back, it was ugly. The Brady Bunch is a good example of this, and they were an upper middle class California family. Clothes were weird and gaudy then and it didn’t really matter what race or class you were. Even the rich Hollywood people.

But I think one can look back in all parts of history and wonder why people wore what they wore.

1860's, women wore large dresses that looked like they had a birdcage under them. :lol:

The concept of trend started in the 14th century when the upper echelons of society demonstrated their social position and wealth also by how often they could change their looks. The characteristic of fashion trends is that they rise and fall.

Change is constant and it's being going on forever.
