I've come to the opinion that The Dick van Dyke Show is the foundation for most of the witty, sophisticated sitcom writing we've seen, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show and other MTM shows, Gary Marshall's shows, Danny Arnold's (Barney Miller, Night Court), Frasier, and on to Everybody Loves Raymond. Sheldon and Leonard of the Big Bang Theory are, of course, named for DvD executive producer Sheldon Leonard.

I agree, that's why I've always said that The Dick Van Dyke Show is the best TV show ever, and at the very least the best sitcom. And it was the forerunner for all those ensemble shows.

I didn't know that about Sheldon Leonard.

Sheldon Leonard is amazing in his contributions to TV & Movies - and a very cool & funny actor as well - He plays a great part in Sanford & Son 3 part episode (the Hawaiian Connection).

Sheldon Leonard was an American film and television actor, producer, director and writer. As an actor, Leonard specialized in playing supporting characters, especially gangsters or "heavies", in films such as It's a Wonderful Life, To Have and Have Not, and Guys and Dolls.

Yeah, even his flops are interesting:My World and Welcome to It took the Best Comedy Emmy in its only season. When he was pushing 70, he starred in "Big Eddie," about a gangster trying to go straight.

He also guested in the later years of Cheers, as the owner of The Hungry Heifer.

Sheldon Leonard appears as a gangster in a few Bowery Boys movies from the 1940's. I know for sure he's in Bowery Bombshell from 1946, and Jinx Money from 1948.
